I’ve reevaluated my opinion of Ivan Cleary too. I think he knows how to create a team. Penrith always run off the field together at half and full time. Last night at half time they waited on field whilst Nathan Cleary finished a media interview and then they ran off together, a la the Spartans. If you can corral a group of players like that, some with big egos, then you are onto something.

Could not agree more. He was quizzed at the airport yesterday about the gambling issue. He stated “Gambling is entertainment”. Try telling that to those who have lost everything and to the families who have suffered as a direct result of gambling.

When I recently wondered what could possibly go wrong with the trip to Vegas I didn’t think I would find out before the teams left the country. Vlandys attempting to broker a deal with sports betting agencies shows a lack of professional ethics. Australia is on the cusp of banning betting advertisements during televised sporting events and he wants to promote RL to increase betting in the US and presumably here. Questionable judgement and bad leadership.

Morning Tony. I noticed that the majority of the coaches in your very interesting article didn’t have great success as players. Why do you think that is? Do they have good team skills, can they see and read plays/players better or just good management talent? Has there ever been a RL coach that has never played the game?

Spot on mate. The media, esp. Fox and 9, are heavily influenced by their commentators, who are invariably former players. It almost seems like they are following a script. As Tony commented last night, you wonder whether they are watching the same game as us.
