Cannot emphasise enough your point – we must take points when possible. I’m a Brumbies supporter and I love a good rolling maul but tonight I hope if we get a penalty in the Boks half we just point to the sticks!

'If you roll over, you'll get murdered': Hatley warns Wallabies of Boks' 'bomb squad' danger

It’s early days in the Jones era and he’s still constrained by injuries and limited time together with the squad but looking forward to games against the All Blacks and then the RWC would love to see a starting pack something like Slipper (c) , Faessler, Topou, Arnold, Skelton, Frost @ 6, Hooper (Tom) @ 7 and Valentini. Assuming a 5/3 bench split & Frost going into lock when Skelton is replaced you could then have finishers as Bell, AAA, Porecki, Holloway and Samu. Adds more line out options and bulk to the pack at start of the match.

Wallabies CONFIRMED: Why Jones opted for Hodge at 12 as Suli starts and four debutants named for Boks clash

White or AAA would take over as Captain if Slipper had to go off.

COMMENT: Eddie has made one huge gamble - and it's not the No.10 call - as he avoids ruthless Hooper decision

I’m thinking Michael Hooper won’t start. He’ll come on with 30 to go just as Slipper is being replaced. I would love to Tom Hooper start at 7 against the Springboks but suspect the safer option will be to play McReight.

Donaldson in as EIGHT uncapped players picked: Co-captains named for Wallabies as Eddie's first squad revealed

Did Tom Hooper train with the wallabies this week? I thought the Brumbies players had the week off Wallaby duties?

Nah – totally objective!

Complete SRP semifinal teams: Larkham makes No.10 call, Corey back for Brumbies, Chiefs make four changes

Love the look of this Brumbies side! Gone with some size & grunt from the get go with Hooper starting @ 6 and JD @ 10. Love the retention of the direct running and hard hitting Tamati Tua @ 12. Toole coming on as a finisher could be exciting if the game opens up. Larkham has gone all in! Can’t wait for Saturday night – should be a cracker!

All good Simon – am in for the long ride too! If we look at the major winter sports it’s clear Rugby has fallen behind the AFL and NRL over the past 15 years. In large part due to how well both those codes have been managed and also because neither code is subject to any real global competition which means their focus is purely domestic.
It’s a bit like the way the NFL dominates in the USA. Rugby is inherently more complex a game to manage because of its international dimensions but that’s also its appeal relative to AFL and NRL. I think that’s what we need to leverage more and I’d love to see more tiered international competitions for club/regional rugby teams like happens with football in Europe – Champions League, Europa League and Conference League. I can tell you as a West Ham fan winning the ‘3rd tier’ of European football was pretty dam fantastic and will keep most of us going for another 58 years! So something like the top 2 SRP teams play in a global tier 1 comp, teams 3&4 play in tier 2 and teams 5&6 play in tier 3. It means there is always something else to play for and opportunities for supporters to see their teams succeed.

Super Rugby Report card and 2024 predictions: How the Aussie teams fared and what the future holds

This reads like a pre loaded diatribe Simon – I get it you’ve got a beef with SRP but it’s hard to find the data to support your statement that Australia will continue to lose our best players overseas. From what I’ve seen it looks like most Australian clubs have retained their rosters for next year and in fact in a number of cases have signed returning overseas players. If there was a country that was suffering losses overseas next year it NZ and that’s despite the fact that it gets more broadcast $ and has just had a major injection of private equity funding. Maybe player movement overseas isn’t related to broadcast $ after all! Maybe it’s got more to do with the state of the game here and there and just maybe the players think all things considered Australia isn’t a bad place to play rugby at the moment!

Agree more $ from broadcast rights would be better and that should flow in part from Lions tour and home RWC on the horizon. Hopefully it also comes in time from improved performance of Australian Super Rugby sides and Wallabies.

The Wrap: Super Rugby’s semi-final cream rises to the top

Respectfully disagree with your premise that SRP isn’t working. There have been some fabulous games this year and personally think the 8 team final series adds interest as almost every game in the last two rounds had a bearing on who played finals footy. As for the finals the Reds clearly showed that it is possible for team 8 to compete with the best and as many of their supporters have attested made them proud in the process. As for players whose SRP seasons are over they will either prepare for the RWC as wallabies or go back and play club rugby which is great for those competitions and club land spectators alike. In a fabulous spin off from the Stan broadcast deal we can watch those games live or on demand. I’m struggling with the downside here? Is it that some players will head overseas? What’s the problem with that – it’s one of the reasons we all love rugby – it’s a global game with cultural as well as sporting benefits. Is there a risk we might lose some players to other countries – sure there is but even then we continue to benefit watching them play for their adopted countries. It’s not like our Wallabies we’re all born here or came up through our pathways! Cheers

The vendetta has no end!

Exclusive: Blow for Brumbies, Wallabies as 'world-class' coach to join McKellar in England

Ardie would be a handful no matter who starts – expect Scott to put his body on the line as per usual to keep him honest.

COMPLETE SRP Round 10 teams: Petaia at 15, six Wallabies return for Tahs, Force old boy's comeback

Fair call but perhaps you’re underestimating Larkham’s game and squad management skills a bit too – he has to work out when he can give them both reasonable game time if he’s going to keep them sharp.

Hardly hypocrisy ‘Short Arm’ to say what you think and then back it up – that’s normally called integrity!

I think he kept Noah on for longer last night to give him a chance to show EJ the error of his ways and to give Noah a confidence boost. That said, Debrezini has been superb this season and would love to see him start a few more games.

I guess we are going to find out in about 6 weeks time – if they can roll the Chiefs in Canberra in late May they’ll be close to hosting a home final.

Agree Lord is a fabulous coach but he was also a descent player – led Uni to a John Dent premiership as hooker & captain (and possibly coach!). He’s a legend in ACT rugby and sad that EJ wasn’t interested in keeping him in the Wallabies set up.

Thanks for analyzing my intellect Chivas and knowing who I’d pick at open side for the Wallabies – very educational. Don’t expect you to follow my comments but if you had seen them you’d know I don’t rate any of the Reds loose forwards let alone pick one to start for the Wallabies! As for ‘your wager’ I suspect you can collect your prize already as Hooper baring injury looks like he’s off to the RWC. So be it, I just wouldn’t start him!

Crusaders too good for clumsy Reds as Petaia, Wright star to push Wallabies credentials

Ok – so your a very committed Hooper supporter! I’m not anti Hooper I just think we need someone bigger and quicker. He played his heart again tonight against the Brumbies and without him the Waratahs would’ve been in trouble. But that’s a provincial team he’s up against and the likes of Same Cane & Josh Van Der Flier are going to make it hard for him at the International level. Anyway it won’t surprise me to see him picked in the training squad tomorrow but it will stun me if he starts at 7 against the All Blacks.

Fare enough!

I think Hooper has been one of the most committed wallabies on the paddock for the past decade. Results haven’t always gone his way but you can’t deny his effort over the years. However, he is getting older and slower and was never the tallest or largest jackal so I thinks it’s ok to question his continued selection. For mine he is no longer a starter – maybe select him for experience and as finisher but I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t go to France.

You must have watched a different game Christy! The Crusaders smashed the reds at the breakdown constantly disrupting their attempt to establish some pattern of play and that falls heavily at the feet of the reds back row – simply not up to the task. None of them will be picked in the Wallabies squad on Sunday if we seriously want to perform at the World Cup! As for Tate he was average at best tonight with the exception of the vision for his deft kick to set up a try – he seemed frustrated by the mess at the breakdown and not his normal self. He’ll make the Wallabies squad along with Petaia who played well.

Brilliant!

The Wrap: Ever wondered what would happen if this column was written by ChatGPT?

KCOL – well clearly they do because the NRL manage to sell their product to broadcasters for a lot more than the ARU can get for ours and they manage to fill stadiums that rugby currently struggles to. I love Rugby and I think it’s an infinitely better game to play and watch than League but the majority of punters clearly think otherwise. I hope the new kid flourishes when he comes across but if it were my money I’d be trying to fund the worlds best scrum!
