So many cynics here. Given a fit Koroibete, Kerevi, Cooper, Arnold etc we might have a cracker of a world cup squad.

Would have liked to see more effort to blood Vunivalu, but Nawaqitaniwase is in truly fine form. Banks we’ve seen and I don’t think he’s the guy.

Otherwise we have a fine, fairly deep squad.

“Backed up by stats”. Cites no stats.

Seven Wallabies, five All Blacks and three Boks in our Team of The Rugby Championship

It’s interesting how a bunch of Aussies, who are typically private school educated, free market capitalists, want to regulate the code out of business.

The reality is, we either take on a growth mindset and take advantage of the opportunities the internationalisation of the game present, or Rugby Australia keep living in the past.

1) Drop the Giteau law and embrace the change.
2) Lobby for the inevitable global calendar, that NH clubs will also need when their SH stars are being called up for Internationals in test Windows out of sync with their seasons.
3) Use the proceeds from the new HUGE revenue streams unlocked by the global calendar and the broadcast rights associated with it to invest in new blood and secure key talent for Super rugby and NRC (or equivalent).

Ironically, there would be a global flatenning in such a situation. The global calendar is the method of redistribution away from the current structure with a few European and Japanese *superclubs*.

Three more overseas players set to join Wallabies on spring tour as Giteau Law sidestepped

Such a key point. Hoops got more pilfers than Pocock in the last world cup and his pilfers in the defensive 22 that year were, if I correctly recall, more than any other international player.

WILL GENIA: 'I don't get the Hoops hate - he goes balls out for 80 minutes every time'

Love your work as a scribe Willie. Great piece.

WILL GENIA: 'I don't get the Hoops hate - he goes balls out for 80 minutes every time'

The problem with this logic is it implies we must downregulate and not select smaller loosies who might play out of their skin every week, much like our captain. Since we don’t have a sufficient sample population, using this strategy would probably just get us selecting inferior athletes. Haven’t we done that before with Mumm and Mowen?

Australian Rugby must prioritise developing big loose forwards

Personally, I’m surprised by the sample of comments below, because it seems readers have come around to a belief which confirms something I have suspected for some time — which is that a running, tackling openside is more suited to the current interpretations of the ruck laws. Thus, outright scavengers like Pocock are unnecessary. I would instruct Poey to play this game more on his feet, rather than compete at every second ruck and miss every second phase. Rather, staying on the feet and pressuring with counter-rucks seems much more suited to this current paradigm.

If JOC and SK stand closer to eachother and play left and right centre, we can use JOC to link with Petaia on the right wing, especially with MT running straight and SK running a decoy. Surely there’s backline moves we can use at set piece?

The 2nd half against Wales gives me hope that we can click together on the day. I’m still a believer. Albeit, there’s a lot of strategy to consider beyond simply personnel. For example, I’d love to see us use pods and *hammer* our ball runners through the contact in tighter channels before going wider AND that is just a rudimentary strategic consideration.

Hooper to the bench, To'omua at flyhalf among ten Wallabies changes for Georgia clash

But it shouldn’t be a penalty at all.

The Wallabies didn't lose because of Romain Poite, but World Rugby, we do have a problem

Strange. Did they change the law, and then change it back?

So, you admit the forearm slid to the throat, so the initial contact of his cocked arm was with the upper arm of the Welshman?

Jesus the definition of shoulder charge is slipping. That was perfect tackling technique, you hit with the shoulder and then wrap the arms.

On that penalty kick, the ball crossed the plane of touch, we should have been awarded the line-out.

Wait, so Hooper isn’t allowed to question decisions?

LSL sucks at 6.

The Wallabies didn't lose because of Romain Poite, but World Rugby, we do have a problem

Nonsense, you absolutely must lead with the arm in a cocked position if you don’t want to get wrecked in the tackle. Pushing into the defender with your forearm is essential. It just so happened this defender was scared and entered poorly, recklessly. That can’t be the attacker’s fault!

Will we start to penalise the attacked if a defender gets their head on the wrong side and cops a knee? Unbelievable!

Personally, I’d rather Adam Ashley-Cooper or Dane Haylett-Petty at the back. Maybe two dads are better than one!?!

Beale was atrocious. He was driven back multiple times on hit ups, causing us to have to scramble going backwards into rucks, costing us multiple penalties. DHP was much better when he came on, he’s certainly a more robust player. As an unbeliever, it’s disappointing Izzy wasn’t able to return from exile for this tournament. I don’t give a flying about his views, I want somebody who can catch, pass and run well!

Hodge isn’t a good winger, but he’s a wonderful utility. Could he go to 15? Will Petaia claim the wing instead?

Can somebody introduce Kerevi to O’Connor, because he really needs to learn to pass, not just offload.

Hooper was immense, it’s good to see the fans diverge from the salty commenters on these pages by giving him the highest rating. It’s great having Pocock back in the side too. LSL was better as an impact player also, I’m no fan, but he wasn’t useless with ball in hand (if he could catch it).

Toomua to 10? I hear Quade is in Japan!

Wallabies DIY Player Ratings versus Fiji: The results

Arnold would make any pack, as would AAA. It would hard to leave Hooper and Tupou off the bench for any country also.

Why we should be excited about the Rugby World Cup... in 2023

I feel for Owen Franks, the guy is a beast and I wouldn’t wager he would stay out of form for long!

All Blacks name imposing World Cup squad, complete with shock omissions

I agree. Morahan was terribly underrated. I wonder if we’d pick him if we had none of these stupid rules about only picking domestic players.

I imagine if Higginbotham was blooded in NZ he would have been developed into a class international blindside. Speaking of Blindsides, Cottrell has the starch the Wallabies are lacking at 6, I’d take him over Dempsey any day.

I wonder if the same can be said for Quade, who has real talent that just requires the right coaching and environment to flourish.

It rather annoys me that I’ve been calling Rory Arnold our best lock for 3-4 years and he was not given the opportunity he deserved until recently.

VOTE: Pick your Wallabies squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup

The problem is, your opinion of Hooper is invalidated by the stats. He had the most run metres, the most runs, the most pilfers, and the most tackles of any forward in the rugby championship heading into the weekend.
