It just wouldn’t sit right with me. Binning the Brumbies’ system and winning culture would really send the wrong signal to players and stakeholders.
WA is definitely worth investing in but I don’t think they’re ready for a top tier team yet. Between Melbourne & Perth, I think Perth has the best chance of embracing rugby without the NRL crowding their market (and proportion of migrants from NZ/SAF/EU).
I don’t buy the argument that they need a Super Rugby team right now but it is the ideal place to build a strong platform from club and schools rugby.

Super Round is a celebration of rugby - that's why it should have never been held in Melbourne

Look I’m not suggesting reducing back to three teams will save the game, it’s probably beyond that now but I believe it’s our best chance. The quality of Australian Super sides is well below a satisfactory standard and simply cannot compete with NRL as a product. Ditching Super Rugby for an NRC is good in theory for the long term growth of the game but imo ignores what has happened since 2006.
It doesn’t please me to say but the Wallabies are not an inspirational side and not one you would associate with grit or tenacity let alone success. While resources keep flowing out of the heartland, the NRL and AFL have now muscled in on some of the traditional rugby schools and the brightest schoolboy talent are voting with their feet.

The pile on tends to be more abrasive from the +5 crowd whenever a +3 argument is posted. It’s not a shot at the editors, just those who would see the code perish just to hang on to their spluttering franchise for another couple of seasons.
We used to be a proud rugby nation and really identify with our teams. How did it come to this.

Yep. The afternoon fixtures in autumn/winter were always special and massive for building community connection and critically with young families.
The failure of our esteemed administrators to ignore this for a few extra bob from broadcasters says it all. V’Landys must be rolling around his living room in stitches.

Super Round is a celebration of rugby - that's why it should have never been held in Melbourne

A death-wish to some and salvation to those who care about the actual survival of professional rugby union in Australia.
Australian rugby at Super level has become purely political with the morally righteous spouting “can’t shrink to grow” amongst other pious rhetoric. It’s more a case of pruning the diseased branches to save the tree but on the Roar, anyone expressing this opinion is attacked or ‘cancelled’.
There is room for more than three Australian provincial sides but I believe it’s pretty obvious not all can be on the second tier. We certainly can’t afford it and the game is gravely ill.

Great comment Old school. McDermott was brilliant and Lynagh has stepped up (if not to international level yet). Also thought Uru worked hard in the carry without putting his name in lights. Ryan Smith not quite at the level yet. Tahs hooker worked hard and I thought Walton carried well. Peitsch will be amazing once he widens his vision on defenders running the ball through traffic. Good to see Jorgesnson back.

'Tough call': Reds too good for Tahs in cracking Aussie derby, as controversial penalty try, yellow to Jorgo proves telling

I saw two ads with Taniela Tupou before the 2022 England series on Channel 9. Nothing at all for Super rugby. They probably get more PR from Newscorp’s hatchet jobs than anything they release on other mainstream sites.

Exclusive: Rugby Australia makes sweeping redundancies as governing body braces for 'economic headwinds'

Who even knew RA had a marketing department these past few years?
This is long overdue and sends the right message before next week’s report is released..

Exclusive: Rugby Australia makes sweeping redundancies as governing body braces for 'economic headwinds'

Unfortunately there’s always a counter argument to this. Some players left the country or the code early for being overlooked as ‘not ready’. Angus Crichton has been pretty vocal about it.
I do agree how the almost semi professionalism of GPS schools has led to much bigger teenagers prioritised to the detriment of developing critical skills. It was over ten years ago that teams refused to play Scots’s 1st XV for the safety of their own players. You’d struggle to argue this hasn’t been a significant factor in Australian rugby’s decline.

'Our system is failing': The 'crisis' sinking Australian rugby - and the 'crucified' coach that shows it

He would be better off skipping the Lions IMO if he can get a contract at a big European club and become the best player he can be. Not the first time I’ve endorsed this move but players can go stale in the Aus system when they stop improving or can’t find their best position.
Would love to see him return a confident player and make his mark on 2027

'There is hatred': Reds, Tahs set to spring selection surprises at fullback for grudge match, Force lose trio

Great comment. I loathed the conference system for how it eroded the integrity of the tournament and provincial rivalries. There really was an authenticity about the ‘road trips’ between the three nations and preparing for different styles week in, week out.

'Destroyed the soul of rugby': Ex-NZR boss delivers damning verdict of Super direction - and his plan to fix it

MD,
The comment “There is plenty of Australian talent to service 5 competitive teams” intrigues me.
Australian Super sides and the Wallabies have struggled badly and regressed for quite some time now. In the U20’s last year the Junior Wallabies looked equally as poor whereas France, Ireland and South Africa looked incredible. The top English players from that tournament also looked a cut above the young Aussies. NSW and QLD also under attack from AFL and NRL in the private school ‘grassroots’ of the sport and WA yet to contribute quality players from their domestic system.
So either coaching from Junior levels all the way through to rep sides is atrocious and the cream of the schoolboys crop (more than just a few) are defecting to other codes or I would dispute this statement.

I get that. I really do but tired of so many Australian players talking themselves up and not backing it up on the paddock.

Richie McCaw didn’t reveal his G.A.B ambition until the end of his career.
I find Ben Donaldson talking about such lofty career goals at this point awkward. Maybe he can back it up but from what I’ve seen it’s a bit grandiose.
As EJ showed, not all publicity is good publicity.

'I want to be a Wallaby great': The World Cup heartache driving one of Eddie's bolters forward

You have to admit it’s a bizarre ambition to be stated publicly by a player of his calibre.
I just think the context of his performances to date shows a lack of self awareness – putting this out in the public arena.
If it was after a dominant season as the established first choice 10 or blitzing a Bledisloe match, that would be a different story.

'I want to be a Wallaby great': The World Cup heartache driving one of Eddie's bolters forward

They both had their flaws but at least Rennie walked away with integrity. It was all of the lies and rude behaviour which tainted Eddie’s legacy. We all finally worked it out when he was booed off the screen by practically every European crowd in and around the World Cup (Regardless of which nation) in 2023. Rennie made mistakes but he never threw the team under bus. Eddie was only too happy to do so and had undeniable form ddoing it elsewhere. For all of his BS excuses, for him it was all about money and a long shot bet with an ejection leaver to pull if it all started imploding.

Weak.

Maybe a young James O’Connor or Angus Bell…but Ben Donaldson?
He’s as pedestrian as they come.

'I want to be a Wallaby great': The World Cup heartache driving one of Eddie's bolters forward

He is delusional. If he gets anywhere near 100 tests it will mean even darker days for Australian Rugby.

'I want to be a Wallaby great': The World Cup heartache driving one of Eddie's bolters forward

Bell can certainly get to that level. So can Tupou. It’s after these two that things get a bit thin.
World Cup winners usually have 7 or 8 of these players

'There's a responsibility': Waugh's message to Tupou as RA CEO rejects flight risk fears

The last 20 years has seen the code internationally come on in leaps and bounds. Unfortunately for Australian Rugby, it has slipped into freefall which is now having a negative effect across the Tasman. New Zealand must insist on 3 Australian sides in a SRP comp or look further north. Unfortunately our teams are so used to losing, it is probably too late to implement these measures with any hope for medium term success

CONFIRMED: Rebels CEO made redundant and coaches have contract cuts as hopes of Super Rugby survival fade

The Waratahs relied on a South African import and the Reds were 1-2 injuries away from missing their window. No extended dominance or hope of creating a legacy to inspire future generational talent because all of their depth was propping up experimental franchises. NRL and AFL have been the big winners.

Though Professor Eric Anderson may beg to differ

Rugby News: 'Weird period' - Tahs' devastating Eddie treatment revealed, kids' tackling is 'child abuse' claim

If there were 3 teams, firstly they wouldn’t be much stronger as cutting the Force showed.
I love how this statement gets kicked around as ‘fact’ with an adjustment period of two seasons as your credible sample 😂
You know the Force may one day make a contribution to Australian rugby but I doubt by then, there is any trace left of a respected professional rugby comp in Australia.
I have no doubt many (if not most) rugby fans from rugby states rue the day Australian Rugby hung itself through excessive expansion.
Maybe it could have worked in an ARC/NRC tier but as a super rugby franchise, the Force has been a disaster. The Rebels haven’t been much better save for a few decent Wallabies they’ve brought through their pathways in recent seasons

Wallaby signs with English giants in new setback for reeling Rebels

I agree with this (unless our Super teams miraculously became entertaining again).
My first reaction now when talented young (and capped) players go to powerhouse European clubs is relief – that they will get the rugby education they deserve. Something really reeks amongst our Super rugby sides. I think it’s likely due to the talent pool being spread way too thin than merely being a coaching issue.

Wallaby signs with English giants in new setback for reeling Rebels

I really admire Tom Decent in this respect. Any wet journo with no integrity would have cut a deal with RA to not expose Eddie’s interview and save everyone the embarrassment.
