It was Stokes’ genius that was the cause of the captaincy brain fade. I’m no meta-physician but it was like Stokes had cast an evil spell over the man from Hobart, making him forget, for about 45 minutes, everything he knew about basic leadership. The capitulation (botched challenges, failure to get Leach on strike, Cummins’ slo-mo throw to Nate, Nate’s U/10 fumble) was sublime. It was as bewitching as Thurston hitting the post in the 2015 GF. Pure theatre, just for us.
