I agree, Clarke’s back has to be hampering his footwork. I was at day 1 of the Edgbaston test, and some of the dismissals were very soft. Shot selection, and an apparent disregard for the conditions amazed me. I spent most of the day with a rain jacket on, and there was a lot of moisture in the air. We played like it was 30deg on a flat MCG track.

Where to now for Michael Clarke?

If you’d asked Clarke and Lehman before the game would they be happy if Finch scored 80 at a strike rate of 70, they both would have answered yes. 80 runs at that strike rate is more valuable than 4 blokes scoring 20 off 10. At 7 wickets down in the last 5 overs we’re just lucky we bat so deep.
Of course, this is all just the opinion of an armchair critic.

that’s what Finch was doing until the 20/20 mentality went to his head. He should’ve stayed there till the end. HE wasn’t hitting it brilliantly but he still made 80 odd valuable runs at a strike rate of 70. More than an adequate return for an opening bat.

So Smith, Maxwell and Finch have all fallen trying to hit out. There are 12 overs left. What was wrong with batting the way we did for the second wicket? All the commentators here that wanted them to ‘hit out’, you’ve got your wish, and we’ve now got 2 batsmen in that have faced a handful of balls. Lose another wicket quickly and we’ll struggle to make 325.

how many of you people wanting Finch to ‘hit out like crazy’ are familiar with the 50 over game?
Far out!!!!

How good is it on Ch 9 today listening to the ICC commentary team (or Foxtel?) commentate rather than Warnie banging on about how unlucky Davey was and how ‘The Beast’ is ready to bowl some ‘cherries’ down for Oshtralya.

I agree. Ideally you’d prefer Smith be the one still batting, bat if he does get out i think they should send in an in form striker.

I disagree. Ok he’s not hitting it as well as Smith but he’s turning the strike over well, and if he’s there at the end of the innings I’ll bet we’ll have made more than enough runs.

Thanks Sheek.

David Hall: Rolling into the hall of fame

He is an inspiration for anyone Tim, you’re spot on. I used to make fun of where he came from. I couldn’t remember what his town was called so just called it Bums Point. Obviously a lovely spot so hopefully the locals or any past residents won’t take offence! He would have put in quite a few km’s in the early 90’s driving between home and Sydney.

I didn’t know Barnes, Hyde and Anderson played Aussie Rules? lol!

Channel Nine's Test commentary should be declared a dead ball

When you listen to the Channel Nine broadcast, you kind of feel like you’re at a barbeque at Warnie’s, a game of backyard cricket is underway, and Warnie and a few of his mates are mucking around with a mic, calling the game.

I think it’s a great idea to have at least a couple of the touring country’s commentators in the box with the locals. Michael Holding is great on the air. Very easy to listen to and happy to call a spade a spade. We needed that here this summer Len. Not an Indian commentator in sight though. Obviously Channel 9 had their commitments to their own talent, and couldn’t afford, or fit in the box, a former indian player or two.

Thanks Nick for your constructive critique on my opinion piece.
Like you said we are lucky to live here, and fortunately we are lucky to be able to voice our opinion in this country. I’ve explained why I think the Channel Nine test match commentary standard has slipped. And why I don’t like it!
And judging by many other comments, I’m not alone.
By all means you go and knock yourself out listening to Warnie and his mates pick their favourite pizza while the ball starts to reverse and Steve Smith quietly places a fielder at short mid wicket. It’s a free country and you’re allowed to choose pizza over good commentary.
