I've been teaching for over twenty years, loved all things sport since I can remember. I've coached football and cricket for all the time I was a teacher. I am Western Australian and believe in the idea that sportsman need to be tough before they need to be good. I love the stories that sport allows to be told and like to try and tell some of them myself.

Grabbing a cold one: What I'd like to discuss with David Warner

Jammel, with respect aren’t we all
Sort of keyboard warriors on here in a way?

Big Baz is it not a bit hypocritical to attack keyboard warriors while being a member of a group like this ????

Yeah ok that’s fair. My tendency for hyperbole getting me in trouble. Not the first time.

Colin T, Ok I’ll give you hyperbolic but the other two, I do not think so. Firstly where is the fun in sports reporting if not for a bit of hyperbole. Secondly, am I not allowed to express my love for the game I am writing about? Why else would I be writing. Just trying to establish where I come from in the context of a letter. A context that requires some self references I think. Certainly not an angle I would take in an article.
I don’t think I’ve established anything as being morally superior just that I have high expectations of the people I admire. Standards each person is allowed to set for themselves. So hyperbolic I’ll give you. The other two? Negative Maybe we should both have a beer with him.

Great piece of writing Stuart. You make you point well and I totally agree with you. Sporting groups should be judged on the legacy they leave behind as much as the success they enjoy in their time. I’m not sure the legacy left behind by the team of the last decade or so will be one many will be proud of. It is interesting to see them get a big of their own medicine.

Why decent-minded Aussies should enjoy seeing India dish out a thrashing

None of us want that. let’s be honest. The world has definitely changed and for the better. My point is though that we still need to hold our heroes accountable. Our heroes need to know that they aren’t untouchable and if they don’t perform in the manner expected they run the risk of demotion. I’m not sure that’s happening as one would think it should at the minute.

Player power: Be careful what you wish for...

Accountability. I think that’s what seems to be missing within the new set up. It’s really seems like they can’t be touched. Love or hate Langer what he did bring to them is accountability. After all they are proffessionals and should be held accountable for their actions like we all are. I would argue that a lack of accountability was the problem in the first place.

I must be looking in the wrong spots.

Have they forgotten about the bush? The AFL is neglecting its most important resource

A good point Sheek. Cricket is stats obsessed. I agree with your point about the grey, but isn’t that just reinforcing my point about seeing value? Aren’t you and I on the same page here?

Australian cricket must give up on the numbers and trust gut instinct

We all love opinions on sport otherwise we all wouldn’t be on a website or in a forum like the Roar. What level of cricket I’ve played or not played really is irrelevant. Let’s debate the worth of the opinion. One of the great failings of Australian sport has long been that you have to have played at a high level to be able to write about or coach a sport. Americans don’t make the same mistake and look and the kind of sport they produce.

Solid press coverage? With respect Don Freo, I struggle to agree. Jordan Mcardle’s articles about where ex-AFL players might be playing don’t really stand as solid press coverage. It would be good if they spent some time acknowledging that there’s more to country footy than the South West, Goldfield and Pilbara.

I apologise I didn’t explain that part very well. My vision would be a state side carnival. Something like the U/18’s but for State Country sides.
