Interesting comments on this from their maul coach – i may be paraphrasing too far but left an impression that our skill execution under pressure was noticably lacking to him even in training.

Hated the attack and defence structures but there was still a huge gap in player skills as we witnessed in the quality of the quarter finals.

COMMENT: RA wanted a Pitbull to bring back some snarl to the Wallabies - Eddie rolled over for a tummy tickle

I loved the highlighting of the contradictions in what he has said.

It would be an amazing exercise to catalogue his assertions over the last 9-10 months in opposing pairs. eg I’m here to win the world cup vs I’m building for 2027. I dont doubt for a moment that he is sincere in the moment the words come out of his mouth – it is an amazing gift of human beings that we can hold two contradictory views without going insane.

COMMENT: RA wanted a Pitbull to bring back some snarl to the Wallabies - Eddie rolled over for a tummy tickle

Thanks Nick. Loved this article – was struck by the non-simple simplicity of the Irish attack, constantly stressing the defence with 2 or 3 decisions for each of the kiwi defenders to make every time. Under Rod we did similar but kinda bordered on obstruction with it – this was cleaner and scarier. It resonated as something we could and should aim for as compatible with smart running rugby but not sure we have enough time to embed.

Why it's a long and winding road back to the Australian way

We’ve had a few calls for Holloway or even Frost at 6. I see the appeal given standouts like Lawes/Itoje and PSDT but keep coming back to an article by Nick Bishop a couple of years ago evaluating LSL’s potential for that slot, with the conclusion that he didn’t have the mobility for it. For me I think the position needs to have as many of the following as possible:
Critical:
1 defensive organiser linking pack and backs
2 dominant defensive breakdown presence with agility AND power both required
3 3rd lineout option
Desirable:
1 offensive carry
2 link play
3 maul defense
Nice to have:
1 culture: enforcer
I think Frost and Holloway offer a lot of these qualities, just not quite sure if they have the agility and defensive organiser qualities for 60-80 minutes of consistent and reliable ruck attendance.

Coach’s Corner Issue 28: Can the Wallabies get even bigger?

yes. sport is cyclical. we won the america’s cup after 130 years.

will it happen in my lifetime? who knows….

Will the Wallabies ever win the bloody Bledisloe?

There was one moment that really bothered me. During the series of line outs that Philip eventually stole, there was a shot of Philip marshalling the troops. Hooper was standing 10m apart, staring into space.

I get it that Philip is leading the lineout defence and it may have just been an unlucky camera angle but Hooper’s appearance of lack of engagement with his team looked really disturbing.

Michael Hooper needs to show some respect

One of the things I’ve always admired about the AB’s as an Aussie is their accountability following losses, and adjustments to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen again.

BF correctly acknowledges that right now, ABs are not no 1. Do the AB’s have the ability to get back to no 1 really quickly? hell yes. But they have some work ons.

For the last five years we’ve never really acknowledged our workons, just moaning about refs or complaining about kiwi fans being gloating/condescending/patronizing.

Having watched us get burnt on the outside over the years by genuine pace i don’t have any issues with AB fans pointing out what might happen against a strong international teams (not just ABs – Johnny May or Watson might have caused carnage in that situation too, let alone Kolbe)

We have to get so much better at owning our shortcomings and working on them.

Why the Reds have the best defence in Australia

Clickbait but I’ll bite. Seriously???? 😂

Steve Hansen reveals what he thinks cost the All Blacks in RWC semi-final

Hooker is really tough – i think you have enough attacking options that you dont need the extra dimension Coles gives you. Bismarck gives you another loosie so in the context of that i think he just shades it.

Revealing The Roar's Test rugby team of the decade for the 2010s

have to say i quite like this team. Tight 5 are solid (but not Best on Show), move DHP to FB and play a proper winger (here my argument falls down) and it has the makings of a pretty solid team.

Jordan Petaia finally set for Wallabies debut as Michael Cheika names team for Uruguay

What ever happened to Sefa? injured or not as good as i think he is. he’s clocked a 10.5 so quick enough…

Wallabies down but not out after Wales loss

Need to watch the game again – I thought JOC was anonymous but some of the comments here have opened my eyes.

Saw Latu’s value for the first time – thought he was immense around the park and kept the Welsh honest while Pooper were being dominated.

I was really proud of the team overall – Wales has probably been the form team in the world over the last 18 months and we nearly pinched it.

Wallabies player ratings versus Wales

What’s happened to Hooper haring off the line at restarts and hammering the catcher? I think Marika’s been given the job but while he’s quick enough i don’t think he has Hooper’s brilliant flying tackle. Would love to see them revert.

Although one thing i’ve noticed is a crazy amount of shepherding these days so not sure whether he’d be able to get to the catcher anyway.

Do we have anyone other than Izzy who can do a Read off a short restart? DHP?

Return of the Pooper: David Pocock and Michael Hooper set to start in World Cup opener

How is Ned getting on these days? Would love to see him get back into the Green and Gold when he’s filled out a little more.

Return of the Pooper: David Pocock and Michael Hooper set to start in World Cup opener

Ya – i think this is pretty close to what will get rolled out.

Personally I’d swap out Simmons for Coleman and Beale for DHP and probably start Finger but overall no complaints. The lack of pace and Beale under the high ball terrifies me, though.

I’d love a midfield of Kerevi and Kuridrani but we just dont have enough time to make it click

Return of the Pooper: David Pocock and Michael Hooper set to start in World Cup opener

I think we behave like pigs when people come over to Oz so can hardly moan about reciprocated behaviour. I think the behaviour of smith, warner and bancroft in tampering was appalling, but only marginally worse than anyone else (going all the way back to atherton). I’m personally hacked off by the boos as i think the guys manned up and took it on the chin more than any other nation. However, we’ve been acting like thugs since Ian Chappel so if other countries want to use it as an excuse to sink the slipper in then they’ve got every right.

Our treatment of visitors has been boorish for decades so we have reaped what we have sown.

England have no moral high ground over ball tampering

would have loved to see some swinging yorkers in that last half hour.

Aussies need a reshuffle but only one change for fourth Ashes Test

Thanks for the write up, Ronan. Well thought out and fully agree with the recommendations, but wow thats just an awful top six.

Aussies need a reshuffle but only one change for fourth Ashes Test

plus the number of half trackers we gave him. the absence of yorkers was a mystery to me…

The hour that cost Australia victory

Stokes is amazingly lucky this year, but gosh that was brilliant. Game could have been over a long time before if England hadnt keep dropping Marnus….
some of those drops were pretty close to lyon’s run out howler

The hour that cost Australia victory

not sure that khawaja has shown enough disclipline leaving outside off to have him open (although he’s pretty much opening now anyway)….

The hour that cost Australia victory

change of locks make any difference do you think or all down to the front row?

Perception and reality: The Wallabies and All Blacks scrum from Perth to Eden Park

That’s a great image, but I checked out his premiership stats on and it said 6 lineouts won for the whole season.

Am I missing something?

Skelton, Pocock off the Wallabies bench a handful at World Cup

Personally I think it’s too late for Japan but areas we need to focus on after our QF exit…

Who are the fastest backs in Australia who are ok under the high ball? I think all of the decent teams: Scotland, Wales, ABs, South Africa, England, Arg have shown over the last two years they can carve us up at will through sheer pace. Unfortunately if we just add pace we’ll get burnt by high balls. At the moment we cant deal with either.

Who are our centre pairing with Kerevi overseas? Is Petaia’s best position 12 or 13? Who joins him?

Who is our 6? I can live with Hooper at 7 with IN at 8 and a hard nosed, quick enough 6, but who is that? I like LSL but unless he can go on a major agility transformation in the off season (send him to Saracens?) his best home seems lock.

Problem I have with this is that I dont see any obvious solutions out there! Any bright ideas?
