While I would really like to see Pucovski return to the team, he really needs to string together some matches, and performances, to warrant inclusion. I know the context of what you are saying though, that you don’t mean now or any time soon. However, there will come a time when he’ll need to be judged on more than just potential.

'Best six batters in the country': Smith will open and Green returns as Bailey denies Bancroft rift over Sandpaper saga

There’s the thing. Smith isn’t backing himself to fail, or have some kind of safety net. That’s made him the champion player he has been.

Smith's shock opener switch all but locked in as 'perfect scenario' looms with Green back to middle order

I think it does in this case, where Green has been earmarked as a long-term player.

I understand you want Green in the side, and I do too, but definitely not at the expense of Smith.

So then it becomes a choice of Smith or Bancroft. If I were a bowler, I know who I’d rather bowl to.

Ask him.

Beautifully said!

Actually, maybe we should ask opposition bowlers who they would rather bowl to? That is usually a good test of who to pick.

Katich was 33. Not that much difference.

If Smith weren’t keen on moving up the order, I think he would have made that point abundantly clear to the selectors. He’s not doing it to accommodate Green. He WANTS to open, and his action results in allowing Green to slide into the no. 4 spot – which may end up being CG’s position long-term.

Shane Watson had never opened the batting at state level before he got his chance at the top of the order. Ditto for Simon Katich. Those two did OK, and Smith, you would say, is somewhat of an upgrade.

Are you suggesting we drop Steve Smith back to the Shield?

Every Australian Test opener option, ranked: Why sending Smith up is a recipe for disaster

Now there is a sickening waste of talent.

That’s another way of looking at it. He plays a role not too dissimilar to the one Mike Hussey performed so admirably late in his career.

Still, I feel the opening spot would breathe new life into his batting.

I wrote yesterday that if Smith is willing to open because he truly believes it will provide him with a new challenge, then let him go for it. It may even free him up, so that rather than walking out to bat against defensive bowling and fields, he’s taking on the new ball with slips and gully in place, and potentially more avenues to score.

We’re talking about one of the best batsmen Australia has ever produced, who I am sure has weighed up the pros and cons of moving up the order. We should trust his judgement.

If Steve Smith feels he can open, and not just for the sake of the team, but because he thinks it may give him a new challenge, then who are we to argue? It’s like we think we know what’s better for SS than the man himself! A man who’s played over 100 Tests and is one of the modern greats, yet we know better?

Test Mortem: Smith to opener an act of convenience, team shows signs of fatigue, Pakistan selectors' costly blunder

There were most definitely times when Lillee ‘willed’ out champion batsmen. Perhaps you should check out his last ball of the day dismissal of Viv Richards at the MCG in 1981?

Pointless trying to say who is better. What would be safe to say is that Cummins would have been a champion bowler had he played in the 70s and 80s, and DK Lillee, had he had the benefit of today’s advances in sports science, would have killed it in the modern game.

Pat Cummins isn't Dennis Lillee's fast-bowling equal - he's actually much better

Also throw in the bit where Curran calls the umpire a ‘f—head’, AFTER he himself has done the wrong thing, and it makes me even more outraged. Respect the authority of the umpire

How his team think they can appeal the decision to lessen the punishment is beyond me. The video clearly shows the umpire talking to Curran prior to the incident, as well as standing in full view of the bowler. No way his team can put this down to a misunderstanding. Take your medicine, son!

I said it in another post on a previous story, but promote Labuschagne to opener, and allow Green to bat at 3, so you can the have Marsh and Green in the same side. Besides, Green is a top-order batsman who, I feel, is wasted down at 6. And how do we know he’s out of form? He’s hardly played for us to gauge what form he’s in!

Bancroft, out of the three players mentioned in the article, should then be next in line once Khawaja departs. His performances in the Shield have been strong, and he offers more in the field than Renshaw or Harris.

Harris, Renshaw or Bancroft? Choosing Warner’s Test replacement should be opener and shut case for selectors

Pucovski’s got to score runs first. At the moment, he’s nowhere near getting a recall – even if Chris Rogers said favourable things about his mental health.

Harris, Renshaw or Bancroft? Choosing Warner’s Test replacement should be opener and shut case for selectors

To be honest, none of them should be replacing Warner. We’re looking at this the wrong way.

What should happen is for the selectors to open with Labuschagne, and then have Green at 3. That way, you can have both Green and Marsh in the same team.

It is only when Khawaja decides to call it a day that we should be looking for one of Harris, Bancroft or Renshaw. Given his Shield form, and what he offers in the field, it should be Bancroft.

Selectors line up three-way battle to replace David Warner in strong PM XI

Agree with the Head-Marsh opening combo. And with Warner going, Cam Green should come in, and at number 3. He’s wasted at the moment.

Australia’s 2027 World Cup mission starts now: The players title defence can be built around - only three incumbents to survive

To be fair though, Arnold’s most likely first choice at left-back, Jordan Bos, is injured. I don’t think this experimentation you note is a sign of things to come.

Is that so? Well then, that’s great to see. And kudos to Zac for recommending Kaz.

Whisper it quietly, but Brisbane Roar should be contenders under Ross Aloisi

I completely agree.

Just like with coaches, there are examples of players who then get into administration – and do well. I would much rather people with a feel for the game get into such positions than those with no football experience.

Whisper it quietly, but Brisbane Roar should be contenders under Ross Aloisi

Let’s hope Ross has evolved, because the times I’ve seen him on the bench, he’s been wanting to pick fights – a real hothead. In fact, it was a good thing that younger brother John was able to get away from him and be his own man.

And Kaz Patafta is the new Brisbane CEO! Well I never! It seems only a short time ago he was viewed as the next big thing, only for his career to flame out.

Poppa would be a solid choice, but Kevin Muscat and Peter Cklamovski are doing great things in Japan right now, and would surely be in contention.

That being said, I’d like Arnie to stay on. He’s done a lot to usher in a young new generation that will only get better. However, if he were to accept the Hibs position, then all power to him.

Arnold 'keen to consider' club job as Socceroos boss firms to follow Ange to Scotland

Agreed.

Arnie’s main strength is that he knows our players, what their abilities are and what motivates them. I felt this was lacking when we had Verbeek, Osieck and van Maarwijk at the helm.

He’s come a long way since his first, unsuccessful stint as Socceroos coach.
