To be fair though, Arnold’s most likely first choice at left-back, Jordan Bos, is injured. I don’t think this experimentation you note is a sign of things to come.

Testing ourselves: Why making London Socceroos' Asian Cup launch pad is such a good call

Is that so? Well then, that’s great to see. And kudos to Zac for recommending Kaz.

Whisper it quietly, but Brisbane Roar should be contenders under Ross Aloisi

I completely agree.

Just like with coaches, there are examples of players who then get into administration – and do well. I would much rather people with a feel for the game get into such positions than those with no football experience.

Let’s hope Ross has evolved, because the times I’ve seen him on the bench, he’s been wanting to pick fights – a real hothead. In fact, it was a good thing that younger brother John was able to get away from him and be his own man.

And Kaz Patafta is the new Brisbane CEO! Well I never! It seems only a short time ago he was viewed as the next big thing, only for his career to flame out.

Poppa would be a solid choice, but Kevin Muscat and Peter Cklamovski are doing great things in Japan right now, and would surely be in contention.

That being said, I’d like Arnie to stay on. He’s done a lot to usher in a young new generation that will only get better. However, if he were to accept the Hibs position, then all power to him.

Arnold 'keen to consider' club job as Socceroos boss firms to follow Ange to Scotland

Agreed.

Arnie’s main strength is that he knows our players, what their abilities are and what motivates them. I felt this was lacking when we had Verbeek, Osieck and van Maarwijk at the helm.

He’s come a long way since his first, unsuccessful stint as Socceroos coach.

True words, Mike.

Also, the football that Spain played last night was delightful. Their intricate short passing game made England look quite clunky. Heaven knows what would have happened had Australia somehow made it to the Final, and played against this Spanish side.

As much as Tony G’s unwillingness to use the bench was an issue, so too was the Matildas ball control in tight situations, as well as the players ability to read the game. Juxtapose that with Spain, whose players were invariably 3-4 passes ahead of what was going to happen, and it’s very evident that we as a footballing nation still have a long way to go.

It's time for football in Australia to grow up and stop being so naïve

Tony G is a great motivator, but not so great tactically. We were outclassed by England, and a lot of that was due to superior tactics and coaching. Also, he doesn’t seem very proactive with the subs, or changing things up when Plan A is not working.

Massive respect for what the Matildas and Tony have done, but let’s hope the next coach can take us to the next level.

The jury is still out on Tony G despite Matildas' thrilling run - will he be remembered as fondly as Aussie Guus?

He’s ruptured his achilles. No one is ever the same again after that injury.

Not many 30 year-olds come back successfully from a ruptured achilles.

TOM MORRIS: Who your club is eyeing in this year's Trade Period... and how the Eagles will use their prized pick 1

I keep changing my mind as to whether West Coast should trade away pick 1 in return for multiple picks, or even get a trade/pick combo. The idea has merit, but so too does having a potential future midfield of Reid, Gibney and Hewett. We shall see.

As for my team – Port – like the article says, they need a tall defender with the looming retirement of Jonas, who hasn’t been a permanent fixture this year anyway. Maybe if Georgiades goes, they may have more trade currency. That being said, Dixon is ageing and getting more injury-prone, so they won’t want to compromise their forward stocks.

Our list manager, Jason Cripps, has done an excellent job in recent years – so I have faith in him and the club to make the right calls.

Totally agree.

Play either Morris or Richardson if they are fit and bowling well. That may seem harsh on Boland and Neser, but the selectors need to have an eye for the future as well as the present.

Why Australia need to start regenerating ageing Test team now before it’s too late

Jake Fraser-McGurk is another to have made the move to SA, in the hope of getting more matches.

Both he and McSweeney are gun fielders.

Agree about George Bailey. Been underwhelming so far.

Last season was a breakout summer for Short. He’s got a lot to offer.

I thought a few years ago that Jason Sangha was going to be a long-term international. Elegant batsman and absolutely brilliant slip fielder. Alas, he averages less than 30 in the Shield!

I’ve got high hopes for Wyllie. If he starts the Shield season well, then he may come in earlier than expected.

No way on earth Hain will play Tests for Australia, unless he plays in the Shield.

Haddin could be great at times, but was hot and cold. Chris Hartley was a superior keeper, but not as effective with the bat.

Hopefully he hits the ground running for this upcoming Shield season. This current Ashes series has highlighted the need for some younger fast bowlers.

Proof that it is now time to draw the curtain, and if Warner himself can’t do that, then the selectors need to do it for him ahead of this Australian summer.

Warner loss sours Aussie comeback as Starc inspires England collapse despite drops aplenty

Your first line is confusing. Australia will not LOSE The Ashes. At worst, they will draw the series, but retain the urn. However, a loss in this next Test will feel like a lost series.

And while Warner’s position in the team is rightly being questioned, Australia’s current problems go well beyond one person. The bowling in the last Test was as poor as I’ve seen in recent times. That, more than anything, is the thing which needs urgent fixing.

Are the Australian selectors sabotaging the fifth Test by picking David Warner?

I get you point, Gordon. There are lots like Beau Casson and Joe Mennie who fit into the category you mention.

I guess I’m just looking for a bit of imagination and forward-thinking at the selection table.

I know.

It’s almost like he’s got some dirt on Cricket Australia and is holding them to ransom. Oh wait ….
