*sigh* This is a big part of why rugby is having issues in this country. You cant just say “Rugby is world wide, players want to travel the world, play in massive world cups’.

What rugby Australia needs to do is drop that attitude, everyone knows its a world game. But they need to see the reality and they need to compete harder in contracting great players and assert themselves in doing so.

Exclusive: NRL powerhouse set sights on Wallaby-in-waiting after ex-All Blacks boss snags Roosters star Manu

NRL clubs have been given some salary cap provisions for signing RU players too I am pretty sure. Would like to know if this signing falls under that.

Done deal: Wallabies star signs with NRL powerhouse in brutal reality check for RA at start of 'golden decade'

My prediction… Laurie Daley to come out early – maybe even before xmas – and say that Pearce is his man for the NSW halfback spot next year.

Is it too early for 2015 predictions?

I saw in the papers today Pearce is being considered for the squad. Granted he had a pretty good season after missing origin, but what does Adam Reynolds have to do to get a sniff. He forced off the top of my head 3 or 4 line drop outs with his short kicking game. That’s the sort of number Pearce does over a season. He made a couple of innefective plays in the grand final yet made heaps of effective plays and did not go missing.
Tim Sheens, please take A. Reynolds over Pearce.

Four Nations has been blown wide open

Too right and at the end of the day it is just not fair.
Just like in life the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
The NRL needs to do something in regards to this before some clubs possibly drift slowly towards dying.

Showing different teams on FTA will create new NRL fans

just examples, 88 or 89 it was when I watched the Broncs, they didnt win a grand final till 1992..granted that wasnt a huge time, but they weren’t exactly powerhouses in that time.
The lesser followed teams is not completely down to performance. Much has to do with marketing and exposure.
we have a salary cap so there is an even playing field on salaries, but we dont have an even playing ground in regards to exposure on FTA, so therefore the “lesser” teams don’t have a chance to catch up.

Showing different teams on FTA will create new NRL fans

thats actually a good reason why some teams should have more saturday night games haha give the broncos more at a cost of some fridays so some people can make it in from toowoomba etc

Showing different teams on FTA will create new NRL fans

Yeah that is well and good for those of us who are already fans. We know what we want to watch and will figure out how to get it.
What we need is to be bringing in new fans and creating new fans and exposing the game and its players to a broader audience so they get on board.
It all starts with getting the kids hooked and wanting posters of their faveorite players on their walls.

Showing different teams on FTA will create new NRL fans

Exactly, I remember as a kid channel 10 would show NBA on a saturday and sunday morning. A highlights package and a game of the week. How many Jordan and Bulls fan came about in Australia because of that? Plenty I reckon. That was also the best time in Australian basketball history and its because the kids were exposed to it on FTA television. Plenty of air jordans and jordan jerseys were sold because of it.

I know raiders have been used as an example a lot, but Townsville, gold coast, sharks, panthers and some others are not growing new fans because they just dont have exposure.

That grinds my gears a lot, how is 3 weeks long enough to determine that something is or isn’t working. They needed to hold there resolve and keep putting it their live, let it grow. Let more and more people come aware.

This is why I think Ch9 and the NRL wont make a ballsy decision and expose more teams more often on FTA, the early percentage drops in ratings wil get them too scared.

They need to take some short term pain for long term gain.

Showing different teams on FTA will create new NRL fans

I think Channel 9 have to soon realise that the numbers watching RL is starting to dwindle. They need to get creative and grow new fans.
I think Milford might be a good example, You and I know he is a gun and current fans know he is a gun. But his exposure was limited by playing with the raiders. Now he is going to a club that gets max friday night and FTA games I bet any money there will be a big surge in young kids being Milford fans.
Just because the raiders performed poorly isn’t the reason why he doesn’t have a huge fan base already with the kids. It’s simply because most would never of seen him play.

I think decreasing the Broncos exposure on FTA next season wont affect there bottom line too much.. In actual fact people who watch the Friday night games from home cos its easier to go home to the family after work or you work late on a Friday might enjoy having some Saturday night games they can actually go and attend.

What he is saying, and I agree with him. If 30% of households in Australia have fox, a large percentage of that would not even have the sports package. So whilst fox does great coverage it isn’t a great tool for exposing the game to new fans. FTA is.

Showing different teams on FTA will create new NRL fans

Spot on, my point exactly. Young kids who we want to become fans aren’t interested in the dramas at the club, the history and how a team hasn’t won anything in x amount of years. A kid will see a player do something on the field that will endear themselves to that young kid.
Current fans, we know the dramas at clubs, player movements. We are already emotionally attached to the side we fell in love with as a kid.

Showing different teams on FTA will create new NRL fans

I agree, us fans know how to source the games we do want to watch. We know how to watch the players we do want to see going around. But the NRL has hit the point now where we need to grow the game and get new supporters, and FTA is the best vehicle. Showcase more teams and more players and get more fans and supporters.

Showing different teams on FTA will create new NRL fans

” The problem is no one watches.” yeah I think the Friday night schedule they have had has not changed in so long, same teams, same commentators. The viewers are becoming fatigued. Friday night football used to be a must watch for me. Now I rarely give it a glance. People at pubs and clubs who are running it on the screens don’t give it much more than a cursory glance.
I am saying this, just like peak oil we are peak Sam Thaiday, peak SBW and peak Sam Burgess. Get some other teams on their and with that other players to let the public have a look at.

I honestly think the ratings have hit a peak and are now going backwards going off some articles I have seen written in the past few months. Attendances definitely have dropped.
Whilst there may well be some short term drop offs in ratings if they were to vary the sides playing the FTA games I do think that there will also be a short term gain in numbers in the gate also.
I don’t think the NRL is creating enough new fans and are even losing some of the long term ones too.Channel 9 and the NRl using the power of free tv can provide a boost for a large number of clubs who get little FTA exposure which will in turn boost their attendances.
The A-league is getting more and more fans every year and strong attendance growth and for the bulk of their comp they dont get any FTA exposure.

Hey,
I watched the first half in bed on the ipad on sbs ad – was awesome by the way. Does anyway know who the commentator was on their stream?
2nd half i was up and had on telly and it was martin Tyler and it seemed delay. Streaming commentator was much better.
Does anyone know the name?

The part-timer's guide to the 2014 World Cup

Hey guys,
I watched the first half of the game through sbs stream. Does anyone know the name of the commentator? He is way better than Tyler IMHO
When i watched the 2nd half on my telly it seemed Tyler’s commentary was on delay.

World Cup 2014: Brazil win opening Group A match against Croatia after rocky start

The Canberra raiders have to pay overs for players to play here and even then still struggle to recruit. Whilst a different code I think an A-league team in Canberra would be beset by the same issues. Players would just not want to play here.
I guess the cold wouldnt be an issue being a summer comp.

Surprise results as A-League's expansion teams are decided

I’m guessing your are referring to Campo here? and yes he should hang the boots up.
This weekend they have Mitch Cornish on the bench. I am guessing he will come on for Buttriss at some stage, Mcrone will go to dummy half and Mitch will get his chance at halfback.

I dont think Ricky has the guts to tap Campo on the shoulder, but he needs to find the guts to do it, he is a liability. I feel sad that Campo has had his injuries and is a shell of a man he once was, I cant imagine how he must feel. But he needs to put the team first and stand down.

Who are the 2014 NRL wooden spoon contenders?

These guys are easily recognised and are associated to the NRL brand. That is why they call it bringing the game into disrepute.
Have a clear code of conduct, have a clear cut punishment system, whether that is 2 weeks for your first offence, 12 for your second and possibly termination for your third.
All I’m saying is draw a line in the sand, have a clear cut code with no grey area around punishments. Players know what they are signing up to and get many opportunities to understand that they are in the public eye and educated on how they should behave.
I am sure the NRL is sick of the hits it takes in the newspapers almost on a weekly basis due to player behavour.

The NRL needs to get tough on undisciplined players

Exactly, it is probably only fair that young blokes do get a couple of chances..

The NRL needs to get tough on undisciplined players

What I was calling for is a line in the sand. Have a code of conduct, have explicit punishments. Wether that is a 3 strikes policy I am not sure.
I just think they need to remove the grey area.
