Yep, just watch THAT tackle by Koroibete against the Boks and ask yourself how many other wingers would cover that much ground.

'Twice the money, half the work': V'landys trashes 'easy money' for Suaalii as Smith adds All Blacks sledge

Yes, but that reportedly $1.6M would include what he can earn IF he makes the Wallabies and gets test match payments.

How many NRL players with zero union experience would back themselves to do that?

Did you miss the part where he played Australian Schoolboys rugby?

I think they’ve seen him play.

Go check the salaries in France or Japan & it will tell you who.

Correct and even Rogers & Lote Tuqiri were struggling to make the starting SR teams, so went back to League and straight into Origin again.

How’s that RTS bloke going?

Really?

Where can i go to watch one of these badminton or Volleyball games where 25,000 people are turning up to watch?

Players, laws and officials are killing rugby: people now care less than ever before

Thanks for all the great articles, timely questions, and the many many pods this year Brett!

Right then, what do we need to see from Australian rugby in 2023?

It’s a combination of money & opportunity.

Most of these kids are playing both League and Union. League are happy for the kids to do this to develop their skills provided they come back to League when they finish school.

These kids have a 1 in 5 chance at getting signed to a small deal to join a SR team or a 1 in 17 chance to sign with an NRL club, likely for more money.

As much as it would be nice for someone like Fittler’s kid to stay with union, as sure as the sun will come up tomorrow, that kid is going be playing League.

An NRC would go some way to providing more opportunities, but it needs to be similar to the NPC in NZ where the players are getting paid.

The kids are alright: How do we keep junior talent in rugby?

Yep, RA were able to get rid of him.

How much did he actually get? Was it more than his contract was worth? Unlikely?

Was it worth it for RA to be done with him and the damage he caused the game, sponsors, fans etc? Yep, 100%

'I'll see you in hell': Kerevi claims RA silenced 'angry' players who backed Israel Folau, reveals he was targeted

If that was true, why did he not speak up again after Raelene Cast said:

We support people with their differing views and their differing opinions, and differing religious stances that many of our players have across our game.

It is very clear that you are absolutely welcome to express your views but you have to express them in a respectful way, and you have to express them in a way that doesn’t cause hurt and harm to our community. Or to a portion of our community.

And if you’re going to do that, it’s going to cause an issue.

I have spoken to a number of players myself and Scott Johnson and Michael Cheika have also spoken to players. And once they understand and it is explained to them the differentiation of what Israel did versus what they want to do, there is no issue.

Rugby Australia for a very long time been supportive of the multicultural nature of our game, both within our playing groups and also in our wider rugby community. And that’s really important, that everyone can feel safe in that environment and express their views, be (they) religious, be race, be creed, background, different nations coming together to play rugby.

That’s one of the things that’s so fantastic things about our sport and no group or no person deserves to be isolated and feel uncomfortable that they can’t be part of rugby.

I am very confident that our players of faith feel comfortable expressing their faith and will continue to do so, as we have seen over the last couple off weeks. But they also need to understand and they do understand that they need to express those views in a respectful way.

Must have been such a huge win for him and his right to continue to post his religious beliefs to social media, that he:

a) ceased to post it anymore and
b) struggled to find work thereafter

'I'll see you in hell': Kerevi claims RA silenced 'angry' players who backed Israel Folau, reveals he was targeted

I must have missed that press release.

The one is saw said that RA and Folau settled their court case and they both issued public apologies.

Not at all.

The wider you disperse the talent, the less cohesion and combinations you have.

NZR have already said they had no desire to expand on the 5 SR teams, why would they then want to stretch that out to 14?

And like i said it would only give them 2 tiers of rugby. Again, another thing they have said they wanted to keep was that 3rd tier because of the benefits it provides despite the fact it doesn’t really generate a lot of money.

Amateur v Professional. Apples v Oranges

The Wallabies went ok in the amateur era as well

Ready and willing: Japan’s patient Asia-Pacific ambition only needs trans-Tasman bickering to end

Yes, but would NZR want to spread the talent from the 5 Super teams throughout the 14 NPC teams?

A large part of the All Blacks success over the past 20+ years has been the 5 SR teams feeding into them. It would mean removing one tier of rugby and we have seen what having only 2 tiers has done for Oz rugby.

Ready and willing: Japan’s patient Asia-Pacific ambition only needs trans-Tasman bickering to end

Well they can shave a few weeks off already by scrapping the extra rounds that make up the unbalanced draw and cut the number of finals teams. Simples!

If RA and NZR can get an agreement for SRP for 2024 onwards i think we are looking at a Champions League concept with Japanese teams and maybe later MLR.

Add Japan and Fiji to the RC.

If RA & NZR can’t agree then we go with SRAU & SR Aotearoa, then into a cup, plate bowl comp with a couple of teams from each competition and Japanese competing.

Ready and willing: Japan’s patient Asia-Pacific ambition only needs trans-Tasman bickering to end

Pretty much mate. NZ had 7 licences to hand out and Oz 5.

NZ handed out 2 for 2 years to MP & Drua, and the other 5 were given to the existing NZ sides in perpetuity. I guess that means as long as there is some form of fully professional comp either with or without Australia, those 5 will be part of it.

'Chop the Rebels'? The simplistic reaction that would do nothing to help solve Australian rugby's problems

Yes, and i have a hunch this is what has caused the tiff between RA and NZR.

I think RA got wind of how much was being distributed to the Drua and MP and it was more than what NZ were putting in the pool to share/or declared they were getting for the SR component of their TV deal.

Somewhat similar to the swifty that SARU pulled when they said they got the same $’s for the broadcast rights for the Currie Cup as Super Rugby from SuperSport in order to not share the extra.

'Chop the Rebels'? The simplistic reaction that would do nothing to help solve Australian rugby's problems

Not really. It ended up a joint run competition with RA and NZ as the two major partners.

I think RA was happy to let NZ have the extra licences to hand out, on the proviso that a) NZ were responsible for them if they fell over and b) RA were satisfied they had everything in place to go ahead and include them in the draw, marketing etc.

Much the same as RA, NZ and SARU still would have been the major players in the running of SR before 2020 with the Jaguares being given a licence to join. Likely the same for the Sunwolves which they were able to withdraw, not renew – need to check the timing on that.

Everything is up for renewal end of 2023, so the only things locked in are the 5 NZ teams to the NZRU, the 5 Oz teams to RA & Sky broadcasting for 2024.

'Chop the Rebels'? The simplistic reaction that would do nothing to help solve Australian rugby's problems

They totally screwed the pooch on making it an event for people to go to, bugger all marketing, no atmosphere etc.

'Chop the Rebels'? The simplistic reaction that would do nothing to help solve Australian rugby's problems

You are confusing ownership of the team with a licence to participate in SRP.

Even the 5 kiwi teams have licences issued to them. They were previously short term deals in line with SR, but were recently made in perpetuity

'Chop the Rebels'? The simplistic reaction that would do nothing to help solve Australian rugby's problems

The licence still has to be issued by someone, much the same as your Drivers one.

It’s issued to you, but not owned by you. It can be taken away, has an expiry date & is subject to renewal.

'Chop the Rebels'? The simplistic reaction that would do nothing to help solve Australian rugby's problems

The licence is up for renewal at the end of 2023, same as the SRP agreement between RA and NZR.

Fiji can take the Drua & go wherever they want at that point or agree to accept a new licence agreement for whatever comp/s exists from 2024 onwards.
