Agreed with the comments TB,a far better dogs outfit than the last 18mths.

Still don’t know how Walker didn’t get put in the bin for pushing Flanagan, then connecting with his head, sparking an altercation when there was nothing doing. After that Walker was involved in 2 tries when he shouldn’t have been on the field.

Happy to watch the dogs these days, it’s been a while

The Latrell Show: Mitchell turns up big as Rabbitohs put bite on Bulldogs in high-scoring thriller

Funny I think the Dogs are a fair bit better than last year in attack, they look like they’re trying for more offloads and mixing it up a bit more. Their defence seems to have gone backwards. Part of the problem today was TPJ being on the field for longer than normal, he ran well, but is just not fit enough or mobile enough for extended periods on the park. Dufty was our most threatening in attack, but weak in defence, I still think he’s more of a threat than Meaney was last year and finally I though Flanagan went OK, a lot better than any game last year. Final comment is it takes time for players to gel, even really good ones, Ben Darwin and Rugby League Digest podcast had a really interesting discussion on this referencing the Eels team of 1997. – highly recommended listening. The Dogs will need to play a lot more games together and get a feel for how everyone plays before they become a better attacking and defensive unit. Finally we have had an extremely tough opening 6 weeks with only 2 teams that weren’t finalist last year. I would expect us to improve dramatically by week 18 this year and look a lot better moving into 2023. If 2023 is more of the same then Trent will be gone by week 10.

very sad, have had the pleasure of meeting him, a lovely guy. I wish him well

League legend Royce Simmons reveals Alzheimer's battle, ready for fight of his life

l encourage anyone to watch Barrie Cassidy’s one-on-one with Langer as part of his series on leaders.

Langer is truly cringeworthy and embarrassing. He was a very good opening batsmen, tough and aggressive. This interview shows him to be a cliche ridden homily machine. I can understand why the players would not want him, I couldn’t handle 40 minutes of him.
CA should cut him loose, have technical coaches and leave the leadership and tactics to the captain and the selection to selectors and get rid of the head coach

'It's horrible': Clarke whacks CA over Langer coaching saga, suggests players are 'pushing their own agenda'

Agree it bugs me this D word, just enjoy the damn win, god knows they’ve been hard enough to achieve over the years. If we win 3 series on the trot, then maybe consider it. It’s a game of inches, and Qld missed by some inches. Yes they seemed slow, and lethargic, and some options didn’t work but I’d never write them off. Felt sorry for Capewell who is a very handy forward with a fair chunk of skill, but it was insane to think he could pull of his heroics two series running.

Six talking points from State of Origin Game 2

reminds a bit of Reni Matua, if he finishes up half as good I’d be pleased

Seven talking points from NRL Round 14

Great Article Matt, I have to say I am way more a Gene Miles fan than a Mal Meninga fan. Geno was a great athlete, super talented, and made the most of it a lot more frequently than Mal. Mal drifted in and out of games, sometimes forgot that people were terrified to tackle him and played like dilettante half-back. The excellent Rugby League Digest podcast had an episode on the Immortals, one of the judges was Frank Hyde, and when asked who he would nominate next he gave 4 names, two were Miles and Kenny, Mal was nowhere.

Remembering the 1986 Kangaroos

I played junior cricket with Bronko at Petersham, absolutely brilliant keeper/batsman. Ian Healy was his understudy on an Australian schoolboy tour to the UK. Unfortunately for cricket there was more money to be made more quickly in league, a shame because he was a super talent. l also had the misfortune of playing against him in juniors and school football, could kick goals from anywhere, usually with ball placed on an absurdly large mound of sand, and was always a handful to tackle.

The forgotten players: South Sydney Rabbitohs

I do remember Charlie hitting a Wests player Bill Cloughessy (?) in a brutal tackle. They interviewed both about the tackle after the game Charlie said “I thought l killed him” and Bill said “I thought I was dead” he didn’t look too flash.

New NRL ad is 'simply the best'

As Jack Gibson said, “this lot’d boo santa claus” it is a very good sports advert.

There are so many, many things to get upset about, getting upset about this advert is like grumbling that daylight saving fades the curtains.

Kenty must have had the gloves and boots on too long and it’s catching up with him.

New NRL ad is 'simply the best'

Blow that whistle ref, people whinging mustn’t remember the truly bad campaigns.

This ad is gold compared to past campaigns.

The NRL goes back to the future with new ad campaign

Aaarrgh TB why why why that 2006 SF still gives nightmares. Ben Roberts passing about 20 metres behind Nate Miles for a hit up and Lockyer swoops and scores……..

How Dean Pay and the Bulldogs revived the Dogs of War

I would add as a talking point what happened to the NSW halves between minutes 70 and 80?

Before that they seemed to know their roles and who was doing what. Then Jimmy came up with some really unforgivably lazy plays, especially the kick charge down.

Then no one seemed what was happening.

Great courage from Mitchell Pearce to throw that pass at the death…after all he’s been through that could have gone horribly wrong. lt was a genuine “faith in my own ability and l trust it moment”, he deserves great respect for going for it.

Other standouts were NSW need some halves, considering maloney and pearce’s age, and Qld need a hooker, and some centres.

Chambers was a tough player for a long time, now he looks like a has been raging against the dying of the light a season or so too long

Five talking points from State of Origin Game 3

Sonny Bill, Sam, Darius, Gasnier M, f**& Me fire up baby there’s a whole Kangaroo squad out of the X team

Rugby league history: The all-time great alphabet teams – Letter T

Funny you mention Thommo, a mate runs a website with footy card pics – AT is rated as the white mans Cliffy Lyons. I remember watching him, he was a really good player, won comps, played plenty of games for NSW and Australia. One indulgent memory as a dogs supporter, remember going Brookvale to watch dogs v manly, may be 76 or 78 from memory Thommo was one of the few players who weren’t sent off, and my dad advised a young me that he was probably the only one who didn’t deserve to…

Rugby league history: The all-time great alphabet teams – Letter T

What a great effort from the Blues, l said after game 1 they picked the wrong Panther, tonight proved again that Maloney is an out and out, never die wondering competitor, besides his obvious talents as a player. We always need players like that and they should not be discarded lightly.
The Turbo brothers, Teddy, Cook and the Fox fit into this category too, never had a dud game for the Blues, their efforts are always outstanding.
Lamest qld effort for a while, Maguire and Kaufusi got a little bit snarky even by their standards. Focussed on the niggle instead of the game. Nice set up for game 3

Five talking points from State of Origin Game 2

Yep J Moz seriously underrated, great, great player for a very long time. Past his peak but held his own tonight

Five talking points from State of Origin Game 1

Kinda agree, Murray is light but nimble, generally gets between two defenders that enables his quick play the ball, but if he doesn’t then struggles for ground as bigger guys can wrestle him back and slow him down. He never seems to get belted though.

I think ACs problem is the great lines he was running at Souths he’s not doing anymore, not sure if that is confidence, coaching or bad on field generalship. He is always willing but seems more cross field than direct these days.

Five talking points from State of Origin Game 1

Stuart it was great back back in the halcyon days of Hartley, Roberts and Stone, they always made the right calls and players and fans were constantly impressed by how accurate they were and never complained of bias, and never suggested technology should be used to improve decision making.

Golly l wonder how we arrived at this mess of today….where we use technology to make correct decisions

Five talking points from State of Origin Game 1

Thought Murray and Cotric did well, I expected Murray to do well, I was impressed by NCs willingness to get in the game.

Agree about Chrighton assessment seems he peaked 2 years ago, Radley and Matterson have passed him now and offer more in attack and defence.

Mitchell well off tonight but, we need him as he has some serious strike about him, and there aren’t too many centres that are better than him.

Five talking points from State of Origin Game 1

Puhlease..can we raise the standards just a bit

Five talking points from State of Origin Game 1

I’d say having J Turbo off for so long is a major talking point, Blues most talented ball player and a brutal defender. We needed him in the second half when we were stuggling to make ground. His vision, footwork and offload ability would have held the defence just a little bit to create some space.

Cleary is a great competitor but not a great halfbalk, we need a threatening or constructive half, we don’t need a tackling machine who can kick.

Thought Walker didn’t really know how to get in the game, his touches were good but not frequent enough. Between him and Cleary no one really ran the show nor demonstrated they wanted to, and Cook and Teddy pretty much had to run the whole show playing multiple roles.

Five talking points from State of Origin Game 1

Unless everyone buys in to Madge’s ideas I think the Tiges are in for a tough year.

I have already heard some players are unimpressed at getting flogged at training as well not having injuries well managed, and also an unwillingness to listen to new ideas.

His stint at Souths showed some of these traits as well.

NRL 2019 season preview: Wests Tigers

Yet another reason why the NRL need to develop a level of penalty that is publicly available and consistently applied.
There are so many gaps about penalties about what is “offensive”, what is against the interests of the game, what is accused criminality, what is actual criminality, and what undermines the game’s integrity.
Current standards are if video exists you are in big trouble, otherwise the NRL gives up.
This is a major issue and it is not going away. When Hayne gets to court it will happen all over again, and the NRL is out there spinning furiously one way and the other depending on what hits the news.
By the way what will happen with the women in league round? All players charged or convicted of assaults have to sit it out to show NRL’s commitment? Or do they play and the NRL effectively say us and the players and the clubs don’t give a rats…a couple of interviews with players mums is sufficient lip service.
NRL get it sorted ASAP, it will be a running sore throughout the season and make a mockery of any “good news” you try to promote.
