Unless everyone buys in to Madge’s ideas I think the Tiges are in for a tough year.

I have already heard some players are unimpressed at getting flogged at training as well not having injuries well managed, and also an unwillingness to listen to new ideas.

His stint at Souths showed some of these traits as well.

NRL 2019 season preview: Wests Tigers

Yet another reason why the NRL need to develop a level of penalty that is publicly available and consistently applied.
There are so many gaps about penalties about what is “offensive”, what is against the interests of the game, what is accused criminality, what is actual criminality, and what undermines the game’s integrity.
Current standards are if video exists you are in big trouble, otherwise the NRL gives up.
This is a major issue and it is not going away. When Hayne gets to court it will happen all over again, and the NRL is out there spinning furiously one way and the other depending on what hits the news.
By the way what will happen with the women in league round? All players charged or convicted of assaults have to sit it out to show NRL’s commitment? Or do they play and the NRL effectively say us and the players and the clubs don’t give a rats…a couple of interviews with players mums is sufficient lip service.
NRL get it sorted ASAP, it will be a running sore throughout the season and make a mockery of any “good news” you try to promote.

NRL says de Belin free to play despite ongoing trial

The NRL has to be very careful here about the message it sends.

People doing private acts that impact no one but themselves, I am looking at you bubbler boy, Mitch, Joel and the unnamed puppies, the Bulldogs private parts-grabbing party boys, and big Nappa. These are acts that when they leak are offensive to people’s sensibilities, but no one was harmed, no one complained at the time and they involve a breach of the participants privacy. Are they really the worst things the NRL have to respond to?

The panic responses to the above show the NRL are not able to grasp how they should police social media amplification of private events between consenting adults that have no approval to be made public. Whilst the players should know better, they are young (mostly) and stupidity that does not break a law is just stupidity not a criminal offence.

The lack of action by the NRL against McGregor and Inglis after both were convicted for drunk driving, was depressing, these two people did something far worse and more dangerous than those above. It demonstrates the NRL responds to headlines not facts. It was an outrageous lack of response by them and demonstrates their “old school” mentality, drinking = OK a bit of a laugh..social media/youth culture bad and weird.

CEOs caught with cocaine, players caught associating with bikie gangs who are known drug dealers, and crooked bookmakers going on the drink with players are also much more detrimental to the game than sex tapes, and drunken japes.

Yet the league doesn’t think so. Today. Maybe they will next week. Or next month depending on the “outrage meter”.

The NRL urgently need to develop some strata of offences that have a measured window of punishments that all participants are aware of.

Something along the lines of:
Grade 1 Off field private misdemenours that no one complains about till “made public”,
Grade 2 offences that are not criminal but offend “public sensibilities” (case studies may be required),
Grade 3 offences that are illegal but don’t cause harm or have the potential to cause harm to other people
Grade 4 offences that are illegal and do cause harm to other people
Grade 5 offences that are violent and yet to be tested in court,
Grade 6 offences that question the integrity of the game ie gambling/drug use of club CEOs, club officials, coaches, players, or NRL staff
Grade 7 offences that are violent and have been tested in court

That would be a good starting point and put a lid on trumped up “bringing the game into disrepute” charges, which means nothing until the Tele gets a hold of a video, or makes up their own.

C’mon Todd there are a lot of staff and consultants in the NRL these days surely you can make it work?

Dylan Napa has 'no idea' how videos were leaked

I just remembered another reason l love it.

Before kiddies, my mates and l would go down to watch the preseason trials just to see if the new talent was as good as the rumours.

I remember Ewen McGrady put on an absolute freak show against Manly. Four tries, plus countless set ups. It was an absolute joy to watch, and there was the thrill of being the “insider” who knew the upcoming talent…just wait till you see so and so….

What made you fall in love with rugby league?

It was a sensational game all the way through, Cliffy and ET were also outstanding…one of the all time great finishes…especially for an Aussie

A mate of mind played one of the early nines tournaments, was Sharks v Manly, marking Rambo he moved in to put a real shot on him. Next he was taken off dislocated shoulder ++ damage.
Never played grade again…..it’s a tough old game

What a great article after the off season fans have endured.

For me my love of the game came from my dad having a bit to do with the Berries then the Bulldogs.

I remember him taking a very young me to watch Les Johns in around 1971, he told me I had to see him because he was one of the greats regardless of what he did on the day. From memory he didn’t do too much, but dad would regale me of the freaky things he did.

I loved being at North Sydney oval in 1974 watching a brutal game between the Bears and the Bulldogs. The Bears were ripping in to John McDonnell who’d left them to join the Berries as they were then. He walked right past me with a massive cut in his head, he got it taped up and went back out, like it was nothing. That day Geoff Connell, Bill Noonan and McDonnell were taking it up to Herman Hamilton, John Gray, Keith Outten and from what I remember a very lippy Tim Pickup. I also remember thinking how frightening the tree trunks George Ambrum had for thighs were, and how could anyone tackle him.

I loved watching Steve Mortimer and admiring how great he really was, and the great partnership with Garry Hughes who seemed to have all the time. The yin and yang of halves combinations, that seemed to set a template.

The 1980 Grand Final what a result and what a final try, but my memories were more around Steve Mortmer grassing winger after winger in cover defence, and doing it with ease and Chris Mortimer waiting until after the Bulldogs got the penalty before punching Royce Ayliffe.

The mighty games between the Bulldogs and Parramatta in the 80s. Sometimes I would go up to Belmore to watch Parramatta play when they used it for some home games whilst Cumberland was getting rebuilt. I was gobsmacked at how tough and brilliant Brett Kenny was, I still think he is sadly underrated compared to more modern greats, and to Wally. He is truly an all time great.

I loved going to watch the Jets in the early 80s, and watching the 81 Grand Final live, and think just for a time they might pull it off. How Graeme O’Grady never played for Australia is beyond me surely one of the best not to.

I loved league in the 90s, probably most of all, just the right balance between expansive attack and defence.

I loved playing the game, although never very good, it still gave me the opportunity to play on the SCG, the Sports Ground, Belmore Oval, Lidcombe Oval, North Sydney Oval, Leichhardt and Henson Park.

Some people l played with went on to first grade, some went in to gaol, some did both. When we get together no one cares, the relationships formed through the game have lasted a lifetime

I loved watched England play Australia live at Wembley in 1990, then watching the extraordinary second test victory on a TV in a London pub with English mates and all of us being exhausted from just watching.

l love that despite all the stupid and horrifying things players do, I still think it is the best sport to watch live or on the box. It is such a test of commitment, skill and endurance it leaves other codes for dead.

That pass was really well done, they had a glance at each other before he put his head down to collect the play the ball, then just banged the pass out. That started are a rather forgettable day for the Jets winger.

Also saw Turvey and Eric Grothe as well as Kenny Wilson, how good is that!!

And yes it will make Sunday more bearable, I was thinking I’d have to resume my failed gambling habits to make the day interesting…

Can’t wait to read the Jets article

Bulldogs snare NSW Cup title from Newtown

go the doggies!!!

great result, jets all over dogs first 35mins, then mistakes just kept eating away. Thought Josh Cleeland went well steering dogs around

felt sorry for jets #15, he was obviously injured and struggling well before the crucial strip. Was right there 10 metres away when it happened. Poor guy looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him whole.

A great day out at Liechhardt, and a sliver of light for doggies fans
