You’d have had a hard time finding anyone tipping a fourth and sixth placing for the Campbell sisters, irrespective of whether they were Aussie or not.

The results have come through on the big screen and it IS A DEAD HEAT FOR GOLD, just not in the way the Campbell sisters would have wanted.

Simone Manuel is sharing gold with Canada’s Penny Oleksiak, with both swimming olympic record times of 52.70. Bronte Campbell is the fastest Australian in fourth, with Cate finishing sixth.

Disappointing for Australia to compete without winning a medal, particularly when they looked set to score two in the event.

Well, what’s in the water in the Australian section of the athletes village? Cate Campbell was faster than world record time after 50 metres, but she faded badly in the last 25 metres. It even seemed as if both Manuel and Bronte Campbell would overtake Cate, although we are waiting to see where exactly the Aussie sisters finished.

They are underway. Cate Campbell is slightly in front after 50.

Now there are really on the blocks. Really. Plenty of support for Australia over here in Rio.

OK, perhaps that was a tad premature. Story of my life. The TV was showing highlights of the Campbell sisters on the blocks together while waiting to swim. So it goes.

The women are on the blocks and are ready to go!

Now, after a disappointing night so far for the Aussies, here is the best chance at gold. The Campbell sisters have already said that their dream would be to both win gold through a dead heat.

Can they win two gold? Can they win one?

Here’s how they line up.

1 Ranomi Kromowidjojo – Netherlands
2 Bronte Campbell – Australia
3 Simone Manuel – United States
4 Cate Campbell – Australia
5 Penny Oleksiak – Canada
6 Sarah Sjöström – Sweden
7 Jeanette Ottesen – Denmark
8 Abbey Weitzeil – United States

Great work from Phelps, who has only 20 or so minutes to bask in his glory before he competes in the men’s butterfly.

Ryan Lochte was in the box seat at the halfway point, but the final leg was always going to be where Phelps came into his own, and he finished well ahead of the competition. The crowd seem to have swallowed their disappointment that Periera could not carry on, cheering on Phelps’ fourth gold of the tournament and the 22nd of his career.

ANOTHER GOLD FOR MICHAEL PHELPS!

The crowd has risen to its feet after 50 metres with local hope Periera in the lead.

And they are on the starting blocks in the men’s 200m medley.

You might have something there James. For swimmers like McEvoy and Seebohm – and even Larkin – to swim like they did, perhaps the preparation could be better.

Can Lochte stop his good mate Phelps from winning another gold? Can anyone stop Phelps?

Up next is the men’s 200-metre individual medley final, with all eyes on Michael Phelps in lane four. They line up as follows:

2 Daniel Wallace – Great Britain
3 Thiago Pereira – Brazil
4 Michael Phelps – United States
5 Ryan Lochte – United States

Hosszu has finished first overall with a time of 2:06.03, with Australia’s Hocking qualifying for the final with the equal fourth fastest time. Missy Franklin – the current world record holder – finished in seventh and will not qualify for the final.

Hosszu has won yet another semi, but in good news for Australia Belinda Hocking has finished third and should qualify for the final.

Australia’s world champion Seebohm was never really in that, seeming to lose her way early on. Up next is the second semi, including Australia’s Belinda Hocking.

Hillary Caldwell has qualified first, and Australia’s disappointing night in the pool continues with Seebohm qualifying sixth.

The competitors are now out for the women’s 200-metre backstroke semis. Emily Seebohm is Australia’s hope in this event.

Unfortunately for Larkin, anything near his personal best of 1:53.17 – set in Dubai last year – would have brought him the gold.

The United States Ryan Murphy takes gold in a time of 1:53.62, with Mitch Larkin winning silver in a time of 1:53.96. Larkin went out hard early but was caught after around 100 metres and was unable to reclaim the lead.
