I don’t know what was more disgraceful watching the Broncos, Tigers or Titans give up a combined 168 points. The Titans were supposed to be pushing for a Top 8 spot maybe higher the other two were just happy to be competitive. Training run stuff and you have to wonder whether Holbrook has got what it takes to make this club a winner- what Mal must be thinking….

Eight talking points from NRL Round 15

Good summary there Scott if only games were won on paper 😁

If the Maroons lose badly in this game I think the series is lost- on the other hand if they win it’s going to be a very interesting series

State of Origin Game 1 preview, prediction: Queensland Maroons vs New South Wales Blues

Yes Adam agree yet to be 100% sold on the Eels but this is their chance to make a statement win

50-point curse knocks Rabbitohs' premiership hopes for six

It will be interesting come Origin for the Panthers- they will likely lose Crighton, Cleary, To’o, Yeo, Luai & Capewell and then have a tough draw from Round 20 with 4 consecutuve games against Top 8 sides. I agree they are the prohibitve favourites at this stage especially with the Raiders & Roosers struggling with consistency.

The Penrith Panthers will win the 2021 NRL premiership

Very good analysis Ben you’re obviouly all across Union and it’s subtle differences by the sounds of it

TJ Perenara: Why he will make it in the NRL - and why he won't

Very well said- next……

The debate around Morrison's Eels visit misses the point

Weather in Sydney Thursday 28 and no rain- hopefully this means a wide open attacking style of footy. No doubt the Panthers will be up for this one and given it’s in front of a decent crowd you’d expect them to win. Will be interesting to see how the Storm respond after a very clunky attack against Parra.

Grand final revenge on the Panthers' menu this Thursday night

Great read Scott I think alot of things would have to go their way for the Titans to secure Smith and finish in the Top 4 as we all know no one wins from outside it.

I think it would be great for the game of Rugby League and for the Gold Coast to have someone of Smith’s pedigree even though I bleed purple. Even if Smith only played one season then stayed on as a coach it would be worth the investment.

Cameron Smith would turn the Titans into a premiership force

I think 1-5 could could pretty much finish up anywhere and as has already been pointed out this is a longer season, more travel and most likely more injuries it will be interesting.

Leaving Parra out of the 8 is a big call, and Newcastle will be an interesting team to watch. Do they continue to build on last year or do they flatline with Ponga injured. I had Manly in the 8 but with Turbo injured and lack of depth I don’t think they make it.

Titans are an interesting one on potential alone this is a Top 8 side for sure but we’ll see

The Dragons I have as a wooden spoon contender….sorry Dragons fans

My NRL top eight for 2021

Don’t read too much into the time its taking for the decision- we know he’s definately not playing at the Storm. Maybe what goes missing in all of the discussion is how competitive he is and probably would have re-signed with the Storm if they didn’t have a SOO player in the wings and the risk the club could lose two players shows how selfless the decision is. I’d love to see him go around again with the Titans I think it would be fantastic for rugby league, and the Titans long suffering fans.

I don’t share the view that he automatically makes them a Top 4 team- what if the weight of expectation is too much and they fall flat? How boring would league be without the will he/won’t he discussion going on

Cam Smith says he's still making decision

The Panthers did their homework and didn’t give Addo Carr or Olam much room all night which is a credit to them not that they played all that bad. Conversley I thought giving Hughes a 6 was a bit lite on I thoughy he was dangerous with the ball and almost broke the Panthers line a couple of times. I had him about equal 4th best with Suli.

Tino was a bit of a disappointment and I think Bellamy wasn’t overly happy with his first stint and probably why he didnt play many minutes. Finucane was a real impact and could have started with NAS off the bench.

NRL grand final player ratings: Melbourne Storm

Well said Scott, this game had everything and then some- Hughes letting the ball bounce and losing possession on the 1st play had me thinking this wasn’t going to be our night. Had the Panthers scored first things could have been very different.

It really was a game of two halves- the Storm were workman like in the first 40 and despite making a few errors trying to force passes on their left edge through Bromwich/Olam they defended well and frustrated the Panthers into making mistakes and coughing up field position. According to Andrew Johns the first Panthers try was a no try every day of the week but the Storm also had one fortunate play when I don’t think Kikua knocked the ball on when tackled by Kaufusi.

What was unsettling for me was that despite the Panthers chasing points and throwing the ball around with little structure the Storm let them back into the game will some silly mistakes and loose defense. I defintately thought that Melbourne’s spine thoroughly outplayed the Panthers and they could have shut the door completely if not for the questionable Hughes sin binning.

The Storm's NRL stranglehold grows stronger, but Panthers are 2021 favourites

Albo what about the impact of Sam Burgess he will be a huge loss if he is stood down

Six talking points from the NRL preliminary finals

TB agree but how much influence did Sam Burgess have on the forwards everyone was righting them off for having a sub standard forward pack but look at how they improved. He will be a big loss if stood down next year

Six talking points from the NRL preliminary finals

Just the way we like it TB 😁

The Roar’s NRL expert tips and predictions: Semi-finals

Parra look frail to me limping into this final having given up 60 points in the last 2 games- even though they have the ability to score points quickly they just dont seem to have that defensive resolve they did early in the season.

The Roosters v Raiders is shaping up as a blockbuster and should be a close one- very difficult to pick a winner but I just feel the Raiders have revenge on their minds and could just get over the line. Hopefully they bash each other up so the mighty Storm can make another GF

Can the underdogs prevail in the NRL semi-finals?

He’s not a bad option Geoff from memory hasn’t he played at 5/8 previously- he also has a good footy brain from what I have seen

Munster a certain starter for grand final qualifier

How about Fergo….rocks & diamonds!!

Seven talking points from NRL Finals Week 1

I’m still laughing Eelsalmighty the teams list came ou Tuesday- the Roosters were odds on to beat Souths then the unthinlable happens and they get flogged. The Storm do have a number of players with niggling injuries though and obviously feel that no matter who they play were being conservative….but keep on dreaming!

Seven talking points from NRL Round 20

Hi Tom thanks for bringing this to light- whilst I have been living in Australia for over 20 years my passion for Canadian sports is as strong as ever. Toronto has the only NBA basketball and MLB baseball teams in Canada that play in North American leagues.

I was around when the Blue Jays commenced in 1977 but was living in Australia when the Raptors were born in 1995. Canada has always had to punch above its weight against the might of the US but despite major hiccups for both franchises (mainly that players didn’t want to play in Canada) both teams have had success and won major championships against the odds.

I have also seen more recently how the Melbourne Storm have had to continually prove themselves despite what I consider to be lukewarm support from the NRL. Melbourne will one day be the largest market in Austalia and deserves to have an NRL team and despite some issues along the way fans have stuck with the team and have been spoiled by having arguably the greatest coach (not named Wayne Bennett) in the modern era and 3 future immortals.

Whilst I only watched a few Wolfpack games on TV and it certainly wasn’t NRL quality, they did the best with what they had namely an average stadium, cast offs and a fan base that is spoilt for choice. I am not privy to the commercial arrangements David Argyle entered into to include the Wolfpack in Suer League but I have read that it was not a long term sustainable model. Having to fund the cost of two bases (Toronto and the UK), playing half the games in the UK and having to pay visiting teams costs of travel/accommodation etc. just to get the deal over the line shows how little Super League had to commit to make it work.

I believe if Super League is serious about expanding the game internationally, then put up or shut up. You can’t have it both ways. I like to think there is a future for rugby league in Canada and the US but create a level playing field and see how that takes off.

Toronto must not be punished to the detriment of the game

Poor old Georgie ate too many meat pies and got homesick!

Nobody does it better than the Storm

Good summary Baz one interesting note to ponder- would the Storm prefer to play the Roosters in week 1 of the final (which looks likely) to get that game out of the way or potentially week 3 if they get through to a prelim and the Roosters have to play the extra game if they get rolled up in Queensland? You think you will have to get past the Roosters at some stage anyway.

4 weeks ago you would almost have locked the Eels into 3rd but a late fade out nows sees the Roosters as the most likely.

And then there were four: NRL's contenders emerge as pretenders fall away

Big shout out to the Warriors going toe to toe with Parra until that shocking send off what a rubbish call how many times that happen in a game and never get picked up ridiculous call

Seven talking points from NRL Round 17

Now Now Barry that’s not fair….it’s like saying Michael Maguire inherited a premiership team at Souths

Can Justin Holbrook be the next Trent Robinson?

They say any team that wins a premiership needs some luck/good fortune- the Panthers have certainly had that with very few injuries and travel disruptions. They will win the Minor Premiership and deserve to be favourites.

Whether the pressure that comes with the “expected” to win tag and the ugly nature of finals football tends to throw up, it will be interesting to watch how they go.

The 2020 NRL premiers? It's the Panthers, dummy
