These cases sound very different to me. He can’t be allowed to play with these charges pending given what was aired in court last week. He should do the right thing and offer to stand down.

Its not an issue of bail. Its simply the case that he is charged with an offence of sexual violence and cannot therefore expect to be allowed to play. He should actually offer to stand down.

Actually, no. His position is untenable. He may be guilty or not but the charges are very serious and tbe conduct alleged if proven true is despicable. The Magistrate also noted that the case against him is strong. I am in full agreement with the author. Stand down with pay and if hes guilty punish himthen with a life ban. If not guilty then he can resume playing.

I agree with you but its not just Melbourne. Perth and adelaide all draw huge crowds as do the awful swans. NRL needs to start tsking crowds seriously.

Its actually not a bad idea for them to go fulltime with, say, 20 man squads. They could both play a series or a match against Great Britain during the season and join the international season from October, even playing Australia!

Yep, great article. Packer’s is a good story now but to be frank he should have been banned for life after stomping on a passerby’s head and would not have survived the new broom coming tomorrow, which will rightly sweep De Bellen to the side pending his day in court. If ultimately his is to be found guilty, De Bellen has played his last game.
Fittler’s comment that De Bellen remained in contention for NSW was particularly stupid given the untenable position he is in at the moment, and perhaps for good, depending on the court’s findings in due course.
