He did write a tounge-in-cheek article (but delivered dead-pan) in the soccer section which had a couple of people up in arms.

Does the A-League have the clout to make a UK-bound event round work in season 2024/25?

Maybe this is a bit similar, possibly some office banter aimed at MMW’s serious league stats articles.

The NRL stat that isn't one, but should be: Working out which forwards really pull their weight

One question on the running meters stat. Does it only count hitups? Or if you run for 10m and then pass, do you still get the 10m?

The NRL stat that isn't one, but should be: Working out which forwards really pull their weight

Enoyed the 2nd half more than the first (think Nick Meany would have too, he had a couple of early shockers). The work from inside defenders was great from both teams. Almost no breaks down the wings, as outside defenders backed away from the ball and trusted the edge forward and half to get across. Great to see.

Didn’t notice the Teddy trip live. Did not look good on replay, almost more of a kick than a trip, which I think is worse. But that is slow motion, so with the benefit of the doubt maybe just a clash of legs? Overall nothing significant to complain about with refs (but it’s not my job to generate “content”)

'Both were really clear': Roosters in a rage over ref's contentious calls as Storm win on the back of two dubious tries

I said the same thing about Melbourne last year, that they couldn’t cope with the loss of 4 test quality forwards. They still finished 3rd.
I suspect the panthers will be similar. They are even more of a “system” team than the storm.

You really think Burton is the best NSW option at 6? Seriously?
I QLDer, but as a doggies fan I am invested in Burton’s progress. He’s a big body with a long/high kick, but I think he is very much still learning his craft in the halves. I have always been puzzled by the obsession with him as a rep level running half. You say Lui does not organise enough, but I think he beats Burton in creativity, passing, running, tenacity, and general “five-eighthness”.
And if Teddy is out (dunno) I’d have Turbo at fullback over Edwards, think he just offers a bit more.

For us (QLD) I’m a little concerned about our middle. Been a while since we’ve played without Tino. With flegler also injured I guess our middle is definitely Carrigan and Collins, then Fotuaka and Cotter (both down on form), then ???

Wild idea but Blues should actually pick Origin team on form this time around - and that means Tedesco’s time is up

I think the whole Monday public review of refs is a bit silly, bordering on mean. It’s not as though we get access to the team video reviews (which would actually be interesting – at least the first few times before the press turn it into a weekly witch burning).

Guess it’s a cheap way for the NRL to generate another day of “entertainment content”, it’s probably in their broadcast deal that they do it, like press conferences.

Yep, I’m also happy with anything goes provided you’re onside and don’t make contact. Wonder if yelling “don’t drop it” to an opponent just as they are making a catch also counts as “disruption”?

NRL Round 6 Talking Points: Concussion sub needs a fix, learning about 'disruption', why does everyone hate Gutho?

But remember the press 2 weeks ago. There was apparently no need for Lui at all next year!

I get that, both Tarpine and Manu had an outstanding games (I didn’t watch the Warriors).

Maybe I’m just being a grumpy “back in my day” old bloke. The first time I really remember running metres being a thing was the year Jason Toumalolo was on fire. I know it was mentioned before then, and has probably been recorded for ages, but I don’t remember it being brought up as constantly as it has been the last decade.

While I’m on a stats/coverage rant. Talking completion rate and sets is kind of pointless these days. With the 6 again rule, you can complete 4/4 sets for only 4 tackles. The number of tackles and number of errors (drop ball or run out) is a much better measurement of possession.

Lomax has handled it great himself.

NRL Power Rankings: Round 6 - Dragons, Raiders prove doubters wrong, Souths players still putting in for Demetriou

I didn’t realise there was “Gutho Hate”. The comments here complain about arm flapping, but that happens in every second tackle in every game.
Why do we need more subs? Attrition is part of the game, and I think the bench is fine as it is. Since the 15 minute HIA has been in place (2021???) I cannot remember more than 2 players being tested at the same time (I did not watch the sharks-bunnies game, were all 3 HIAs concurrent?).

I find the whole obsession with run metres a bit too American/NFL. It’s relatively recent isn’t it, only really a thing in the last 10 years? I guess it gives TV something to talk about.
Fullbacks and wingers get lots of “free” metres, but only if their team is winning the yardage game, which means they receive more uncontested long kicks.

So close, but no cigar. Just missing some polish and calm professionalism.
The kid on debut didn’t get to do much, but he was always there as a support/decoy runner which is what I complained about last week, so happy with that.
Not sure if we won the middle, but we definitely didn’t lose it. Thought it was a great effort for a small pack. Do worry about how we’ll fare againt giant packs like the Broncos.

Bulldogs grab moral victory, but Melbourne take the two points as Storm overcome Foxx hat trick in comeback win

(Sorry, I’m going to take my info from Phil Gould, but I think it’s actually fair).
Lets say the dragons deal for Lomax is 800K for 4 years (no idea if that is correct).
That means they have committed 800K of their salary cap for 4 years, potentially outbidding other teams who were after Lomax at the time.
So letting him go early for less effectively means they do not honour the salary cap commitment they made to outbid rivals. And if the deal is back ended then it is even worse. That is why when players are let go for less, the original club has to chip in (e.g. dogs contributing for Aaron Woods at the sharks).

Once in a tipping comp I came 3rd (out of 20something) tipping the entire season before a ball was kicked. Think it was the year we lost the GF to the storm (and Billy Slater almost lost an ear), so tipping those two every week had definitely helped.

Yeah, I’m probably being a bit too negative. The good was really good.

There was a just a set of the one out stuff early in the second, and I was “uh oh, I’ve seen this before”. I guess some of that was fatigue, heavy track and no one (other than penrith) keeps that early pace going all game

Overall I feel happy about it

Young send-off 'over the top', Radley sin-bin 'ridiculous' says Robbo as Roosters reduced to 11 on nightmare night

I’ll take the win, and the first 20 minutes, but not much to smile about other than that.
But we still seem to be one the “laziest” (probably a bit too harsh a term) teams in posession, when we know we’re doing a one out hit up the entire rest of the side just stands and watches, and so then the opposition know it as well. Desperately need some support runners to give the ball carrier a chance of winning the collision.

That said, I’ll happily take the two, and the obvious improvement over last year

Young send-off 'over the top', Radley sin-bin 'ridiculous' says Robbo as Roosters reduced to 11 on nightmare night

Do you think the Knights have similar issues to the Raiders (and maybe the Cowboys too), namely young fellas would prefer to live in the bigger cities?
Not saying it’s a major issue, just that it’s a factor which makes it harder to recruit a top quality roster. Anecdotally it seems that they both recuit from the UK more than other clubs.

Knights already at sixes and sevens again: What exactly was the rush to re-sign O’Brien long term?

I’d rather players have the leverage than TV/NRL executives or gambling companies.

Getting value for money from stars is the biggest competitive advantage in the NRL - and the flip side can be devastating

The souths hype is a bit over the top. Titan’s haven’t won a game or looked any good this year, but there’s not 2 stories a day about them. I get the NRL is a soap opera for blokes and we all apparently love drama drama drama, but we’re only 3 weeks in. And I (obviously) sincerely hope they go 0-4 tomorrow

NRL Round 3 Talking Points: Blowouts, bad bunnies, and bunker babies are back

Vossy would be the perfect “colour guy” commentator, with another as the the play-by-play. Unfortunately only ex players are given that role, so he’s kind of stuck. I’ve said before Fox must love him, he takes the scatter gun approach to searching for drama/controversy/sensation in every game, which I assume is one of the things they ask from their staff. I like what I’ve seen of his shows, “Boots and all”, “The fan”, etc.

The world cup was eye openning, the UK commentators were so much better than ours. Much more “old school” media as opposed to the “everything is a controversy” tabloid crap we have unfortunately become used to here.
