Rugby World Cup live scores, blog: Wallabies vs Wales

Huge news – Sonny Bill Williams has signed with Canterbury Bulldo… Crusaders.

Young rugby players mimic league too much

Can’t quite see the job description for next All Blacks coach being:

“Seeking coach with Super 14 win percentage of 36.7% including the ability to win just 38.7% of home games”.

All Blacks still an option for me, says Mitchell

The Blues (in particular) and Hurricanes would require nothing short of a miracle to make the finals from here. It ain’t gonna happen.

Methinks whoever wins the Waratahs v. Brumbies game next week will take the last Top 4 spot, unless the Reds can somehow get through their Bulls, Stormers, Brumbies run with two wins – unlikely at best.

Unless you are backing the Hurricanes to beat the Highlanders, Cheifs, Reds and Waratahs (and then about 10 other games to fall in the right order) then I would have my money on at least one Aussie team in the Top.

Brumbies play Super disgracefully again

The loss they had to have – I recall telling my friends something very similar after the Blues game!

At least the Brumbies destiny is still in their own hands.

That said, if they handle destiny anything like the Rugby ball, it will not be pretty.

Brumbies play Super disgracefully again

If we cared what the rest of the world thought we wouldn’t play Rugby, Cricket or AFL. We don’t care what they think because, frankly, we blow every other country in the world off the charts on basically every statistic that is important.

Why football struggles for support in Australia

The is a big difference between exaggerating the extent of an injury after being absolutely pole-axed in a contact sport and flying three metres in the opposite direction after being brushed by someones arm as seen in soccer.

Why football struggles for support in Australia

Why should the Brumbies pay for the mistakes of NSWRU? I’d be in favour of the Brumbies area being expanded to include Western Sydney with maybe a couple of games there a season once the competition is expanded (which is more than the Waratahs play there) but the idea of destroying the only area in Australia where rugby is the number one sport is, frankly, bizarre.

Could the Brumbies save Western Sydney rugby?

It’s at home, the Reds have never won there, the Reds haven’t beaten the Brumbies in over a decade. The Reds are good this season but they won’t be anywhere near beating the Brumbies at Bruce. I’m not saying it isn’t possible for the Reds to win – but there is no way the Brumbies will go into this match a cent over $1.60.

Super 14 match previews

Last certain win of the season? As certain as you can be about these things (which is not very) but there is absolutely no chance of the Brumbies losing the the Highlanders! They will be strong favorites against the Reds and ‘Canes (although you can never say never). I’d back them to get at least 17 points from those four games.

If they can’t get the BP against the Cheetahs and Highlanders it will make things very tough at the end of the season (unless they can somehow spring an upset at either Jade or ANZ).

Yeah, that’s one good winger. But considering New Zealand has about 5+ wingers as good or better it’s depth that is our issue.

If only we could find these guys before League does. If players like Folau, Inglis, Bowen and Morris played Union as kids we would have no wing issues. I’ve no doubt all four of them would be better than Turner if they had played Union their whole lives.

It’s no use trying to recruit them when they are older though because without the Union knowledge from a younger age they are severely lacking as Union players.

My one qualm is perhaps the NZ Warriors should be involved in the game? After all it is ANZAC not AAC.

The Roosters Dragons game is entrenched now so why not have a Roosters v. Dragons/Warriors v. One of the big Sydney clubs double header at the (conveniently named) ANZ Stadium. You could play both anthems before the double header and have all the Kiwis (including any playing for the Aussie clubs) stand together and all the Aussies standing together.

It would sell 65,000+ no worries and would include the Kiwis who all after all half of ANZAC Day.

NRL shows guile in its "war" with the AFL

By the same token how about a NSW home game in Canberra or Newcastle!

Play a State of Origin at Dairy Farmers Stadium

I like the idea. Although the stadium would need some temporary seating to get to (at least) 30,000.

I would be sad to see ODI’s exit entirely – but they definitely need to be cut back dramatically. Australia is about to play seven ODIs and two Twenty20s against England. Clearly a seven match series is ridiculous. I would like to see a better balance of, say, 3 or 4 ODIs and 3 or 4 Twenty20s. How can interest really be sustained in a 7 match series?

International cricket suffocating itself

Abolishing Pakistan, New Zealand, the West Indies and Bangladesh from test cricket would be foolish and counterproductive. Brett – I vaguely recall Australia winning the last tournament (but I could be wrong on that) and aside from that I couldn’t say! By contrast, most Australian cricket fans could probably tell you who won every test series involving Australia for the last 10 years.

International cricket suffocating itself

Thanks KB – I have noticed your generally inflammatory demeanor on other articles. As it is Rugby League, Union and Cricket are the sports I love. That said I am by no means a football/soccer hater. I would love to see a thriving A-League – however I do not see that Townsville is where to do it.

Having a football team in Townsville is crazy

Ben – I was at the game in question and must say it was – without doubt – the best Rugby game I have ever been too or even seen. To be there was a privilege. However – you are being unfair on our League cousins if you pick that game as representative of Rugby Union in general.

Mistakes in league? It must be the ball's fault

Right you are – like most fans of League I have succumbed to the habit of using “Rugby League” and “NRL” interchangeably. As it is the “NRL” did not even exist when the Rams/Reds were established. Nonetheless I am sure you still understand what I am saying.

My apologies to Queenslanders. It would seem the GSP per capita figures have shifted since I last looked at them. As it is both states are about even (Queensland are very slighty ahead). Regardless – it only takes a quick look at average crowd figures to realise there is much more demand for soccer in Victoria than Queensland.

While we are at it the Victory and Heart will fill the MCG and Ethiad each week and the AFL teams will be relegated to their traditional grounds. The Broncos will of course have to play at Ballymore.

As it is Singapore’s biggest Stadium at present has a capacity of just 6,000 (their national stadium is being rebuilt at the moment). Singapore isn’t exactly sport-mad either.

You raise a good point about Queensland – it seems perplexing to me that the FFA would put three teams there when the state has a weak soccer history. By comparison soccer is quite popular in Victoria (and it has a much larger and more affluent population) and there is only one team there.

Cairns could have some potential – after all the Cowboys got 14,000 there once. But I wouldn’t bank the fortunes of the club on a couple of home games in Cairns each season.

Sorry – I think we may be talking about different things. I am talking single game crowds and you seem to be talking over a 13 home game season? Please correct me if I am wrong.
