I was never much good but played cricket for 30 years in country NSW and have a real love for the game. I used to open the batting and was a change bowler with my dibbly dobbly medium pacers. .. I also played League as a halfback till my career was cut short due to a tragic lack of talent. .. I have been a farmer most of my working life.

Thems the sort of numbers that are bound to get him picked 😁

'Border-esque': A call to arms for Tim Paine

I agree Paul. There’s a lot to get excited about this summer. An undeniably interesting choice for the new skipper, the prospect of a young and talented wicket-keeper and maybe even the breakout campaign for an Aussie allrounder truly worthy of the name. Here are a few things I hope to see. 1] Cummins to grow into the captaincy and make it his own. He’s already said that he intends to collaborate strongly with his senior players and that’s Ok as long as there is no doubt that he is the man in charge and he makes the final decisions. At this point his character cannot be called into question and we need his clean skin image to bleed through the entire team. (Please Pat, if you do have any skeletons, at least keep them well and truly buried for the summer) 2] There are a number of strong w/k contenders but I’d like to see it go to one of the younger guys. No doubt Carey can do the job and has probably earned the right to have first crack at it but I just feel that at 30 his boat has already started to slip away from the pier. Youth is the way to go imo. 3] I’ve got a feeling that if Greene can get going with bat or ball early in the series there will be no stopping him. Wishful thinking perhaps, but the feeling is strong.

Forget the negatives, Australian cricket is in a great place ahead of the Ashes

While I agree with most of the article I couldn’t help but notice India’s first innings wasn’t all that flash either. In fact there was a lot of symmetry in the respective first digs. India’s innings was set up by scores of 74 & 43 (Kohli/Pujara) while ours was almost identical with twin pillars of 73 & 47. The 50 run lead was due to India’s remaining 8 batsmen being slightly better than our 8. It could be argued that we rode on Labs luck but I’d counter that be saying there were plenty of uppish shots from the Indians that just didn’t quite go to hand which, on another day, could quite easily have done so.

Australia winning the Boxing Day Test is anything but a certainty

Lots of pundits predicted these exact changes. I’ll admit to looking forward to Gills batting. I’ve heard great things about him.

How does India respond to the humiliation of 36?

I can see your point but what if you get a guy who has a habit of dropping the big guns but snaffling the tail. I’m not sure that’s ever been the case but I think it makes sense to use both metrics to find out.

Cricket needs a fielding score. How about this one?

I can see 8 numbers on ping pong balls. They are …. … nah, it’s gone 😔

Australia's shaky batting could cost the Border-Gavaskar trophy

Yep, sounds good.

Cricket needs a fielding score. How about this one?

“We will make them grovel”. He probably would have liked to take that one back but it’s just typical Tony Greig. Never take a backward step. I’ve always thought he was one of England’s better captains because of his fierce competitive nature and we lost a good’un when he passed. May he RIP.

Tony Greig: The forgotten great all-rounder

The fielding is a big one. It cost you big time. Fix that and you’re half way there I reckon.

How does India respond to the humiliation of 36?

While I 100% agree that we need some sort of fielding metric I can’t see anything wrong with the idea of counting the actual cost as opposed to the average cost. So, dropping the double centurion on 10 costs my team 190 runs and that’s my penalty. In this way people could look back years later and see that in my career I dropped 15 catches which cost my team 2000 runs while some other player dropped 20 catches which only cost 1000. I reckon the statisticians could have all sorts of fun with that type of data.

Cricket needs a fielding score. How about this one?

There’s much about this I don’t understand but that’s not surprising since my maths and grasp of statistics is dodgy af. However, this caught my eye “In the last decade of Test cricket just over 30 runs have been scored for each wicket and so 30 is the number I used.” .. I assume that means the average team score has been ~ 300 and dividing that by the 10 wickets gives the 30 per wicket average. That’s fine I guess but just the same, if I drop a top order batsmen when he’s on 10 I would be very happy to only get a -20 for the mistake when he goes on to make 200. Conversely, I would be a bit peeved to cop a -30 score if I dropped Hazlewood on 0 and he gets out comically 2 balls later. .. I guess my point is that all wickets are definitely not created equal and this has been well recognised for years via Duckworth/Lewis et al.

Mate, I feel your pain 😔

Who’d have thunk it? A few takes from the first Test

I think you underestimate our ability to choke when chasing small targets. It seems to have been an issue forever. Anyway, gotta say I’m happy we managed to drive this one home. I never thought we wouldn’t get the runs but was half expecting to be 7 or 8 down. Oh, and yeah, Umesh did help our cause with those leg sides sprays.

Where to now for India after 36 all out?

Yes, I’ve heard nothing but glowing praise for Gill but haven’t really seen much of him out on the paddock. I think we can add Pant to the list of potential game changers as well. His batting has got to be better than Saha’s and Saha had a fairly poor time of it behind the stumps barring that run-out of Wade. I don’t think they’ll lose anything in the keeping and would very likely improve the batting. Pant is a dangerous customer imo. He has the potential to play a one day innings within a Test match and that could be game changing.

Sometimes you just gotta laugh John. I haven’t seen a BBL game this year so can’t really comment on the commentary but that does sound like Brad Hodge 😁 I actually like Brad, he’s a funny man and an excellent cricketer, but he does come up with some screaming bloopers now and then.

Where to now for India after 36 all out?

I’m hoping that we’ve finally managed to get on top of Pujara. The next Test is crucial to proving or disproving any sort of ascendency over him, but if it turns out we have then I’m pretty sure it’s goodnight India. They are a talented bunch though and who knows, someone else might rise from the ashes and give us a super hard time in the absence of Kohli and Pujara.

Where to now for India after 36 all out?

I can only assume this is a bit tongue in cheek but If Ch 7 really isn’t happy with Cummins and Hazlewood then Ch 7 can go directly to hell. As for the advertisers, that’s the risk they take if they choose to hitch a ride on test cricket and they should have gone in with their eyes wide open.

Where to now for India after 36 all out?

Hi Dwayne. Neither team had played a Test for about 10 months and it showed in the batting I thought. The bowling was amazingly good from both sides but the batting was a bit rustier. I think the Indians would do well not to dwell on it too much. Stuff happens and when it does just take it on the chin and move on is my advice to them.

Where to now for India after 36 all out?

Yeah, I’d say you’re dead right but it hardly seems fair. Tbh, I think I’d rather drop Head than Wade. Since coming back into the side Wade has played some pretty important innings and kept us moving forward when it looked like we could easily stall. I’ve got nothing against Head, in fact I want him to succeed, but I just think that of the two Wade’s work has been the best. To drop him now would be a mistake imo.

Where to now for India after 36 all out?

I’ll admit to being very worried about the 90 runs we needed to make to seal the game. If ever there was a banana skin total that was it. That’s why I thought Matty Wade played it perfectly. No mucking around. If the ball was there to hit he hit it and his positive outlook rubbed off onto Joe as well. .. Goodonya Matty, you little beauty.

It’s not likely to happen since the new stadium came online but how about Waca?

The bowling of Australia and India is joyful

Whoa there. Everyone seems to have given up already. Give up a 50 run lead and everyone sounds like they are ready to take the big step off a tall building. Hold off on the prozac boys. It’s not over yet. Not by a long shot.

Australia's shaky batting could cost the Border-Gavaskar trophy

Yeah, I think it’s fair to say that it’s been the bowlers (+ Warner and Smith, and more recently Marnus) who have kept us up towards the top of the heap the last few years. I expect at this rate we’ll probably have the batting strength we crave just shortly before the bowling starts to fall apart 😛

Late wickets a just reward for disciplined Aussies

They were all good. There was no weak link which makes it a truly great team effort. I’m going to make a point of enjoying every moment these boys spend playing together as this is a rarefied attack imo..
