I was never much good but played cricket for 30 years in country NSW and have a real love for the game. I used to open the batting and was a change bowler with my dibbly dobbly medium pacers. .. I also played League as a halfback till my career was cut short due to a tragic lack of talent. .. I have been a farmer most of my working life.

Yeah, I didn’t think the ‘nick’ was any sort of sure thing. It was pretty scanty evidence and I gave it no better than a 50% chance of being upheld if they had reviewed it. Putting it anyone way, I’ve seen reviews with stronger claims than that turned down.

Late wickets a just reward for disciplined Aussies

I was super impressed with the bowling. They adjusted their lengths according to what the ball was doing in the air and off the deck, which was not much as it turned out, and played a 6 hour waiting game. The control needed to do that is exceptional. It’s hard to believe it’s been 10-11 months since they last played a test. .. Green looked great though I was getting a bit worried they were going to overbowl him on his first day under the baggy green. Not so in the end. It was just about right I’d say.

Not a bad tactic actually. By getting out for single digits all the time he’s really cut down his risk of getting hit in the head or pulling a hammy or whatever. 😂

Not any more. One of them truly wised up and moved to Brisbane 😊

Australia forced into yet another squad change for first Test

Stokes has x factor with a capitalised, Italicised and underlined X.

The irrefutable evidence that makes Shane Watson one of Australia's greatest ever cricketers

Agreed. Batting in the top 3 as he did he got the swinging, seaming conditions anyway with the 1st new ball and fresh bowlers.

The irrefutable evidence that makes Shane Watson one of Australia's greatest ever cricketers

I agree with the idea that he should have played most of his test cricket at 6. It’s a crucial spot and it would be interesting to know how often the No. 6 has to face up to the 2nd new ball. Watto was well equipped to handle it and I reckon he would have been the ideal 6. I also like your point about it serving the team better to have him there and not way up the order. I always thought that but Watto himself seemed to want to bat in the top 3. I’m not sure if he actually did boss the batting order around but it sure does seem that way.

The irrefutable evidence that makes Shane Watson one of Australia's greatest ever cricketers

For me the main problem with Watto in test cricket was his poor conversion rate. He made 28 scores of 50 + (not too bad for allrounder I think) but of those only 4 were 100+ giving him a conversion rate of 1/7. As a comparison, Ben Stokes has 32 50+ scores but 10 of them are centuries, so he has a conversion rate of ~ 1/3. The gap between Stokes batting and bowling average is about 7 (38/31) whiles Watto’s is a meagre 1 (35/34). .. He’s probably not in the same class as Stokes but a few more 100’s might have closed the gap quite a lot.

What if Green is ruled out with concussion or he’s simply not selected? I based what I said on the assumption Green won’t be playing.

I don't care what you say, Joe Burns can't play

SMarsh and Khawaja for me. Leave the rest of the batting where it is ie Lab at 3, Smith at 4 etc. I just feel there’s already enough disruption without adding to it by shifting around the batting positions for the entire top/middle order.

I don't care what you say, Joe Burns can't play

The 2nd wicket was a beauty. The batsman was probably expecting an outswinger and I reckon he was looking to let it go when he saw the line outside of off. Big surprise when it came back in instead. .. Good over but I can recall quite a few just as good if not better.

Is this one of the greatest overs in Test history?

That seems the most sensible move to me. At least these guys have some form atm. Why just gift the Indians 2 top order wickets by sticking to the squad as originally picked.

Australia must throw the selection manual out for Adelaide as Burns fails again

There is a knock-on effect with all this. If, as expected, we are two down for bugger all it puts enormous pressure on the rest of the batting lineup. Test cricket is all about pressure but no team wants to go into a match effectively batting with 9 players. I’m with Joey on this. Go for the old firm of Ussie and SMarsh. At least they’ve both been there, done that and between them might take enough shine off the ball to give the big guns some sort of platform to work from. It’s not a backward step, it’s a smart one imo.

Nasty looking blow. Hope he’s Ok.

Scary moment as Cameron Green is struck in the head while bowling

* Dane. 😊

Cameron Green has earned his shot at our unfair expectations

Yes, I agree 100% Dan but I do think you’ve underestimated the lad a bit. As well as being the captain it’s clear that he has the smarts to be the coach, be the chairman of selectors and drive the team bus in his spare time.

Cameron Green has earned his shot at our unfair expectations

This latest blow to the head was the result, in part, of Will being caught in two minds. He started to duck but also had a bit of a swipe at the ball and in the end did neither effectively. Definitely a technique problem on this occasion. It was a very good bouncer but he played it poorly. I think he can still have a long and successful career but he has to improve his bouncer playing skills significantly or he will be cannon fodder for the likes of Archer, Wagner, Rabada etc. It’s a tough one to call and I reckon it all depends on whether you think he can solve his short-ball problems quickly enough. One thing is for certain though. He needs to do it quickly if he’s going to do it at all because he simply can’t afford to keep getting hit in the head.

Should Will Pucovski retire or be retired?

Ahh, right. Of course. Thanks.

Green ton makes tough call even tougher

Looks that way, but for it to be a genuine bat-off they have to pick the form guys and forget about incumbency, left/right combo’s, planning for the future etc. Which is exactly how it should be against the Indian’s imo.

Green ton makes tough call even tougher

I can’t remember what Dave was like tbh.

Green ton makes tough call even tougher

Unless they’ve already decided Burns will play in the 1st test. I hope that isn’t the case. I’d rather see them pick the side on form.

Green ton makes tough call even tougher

I find it interesting that Saha is keeping for the Indians in this match. Iirc he was the next big thing at one point but at 36 that point is well in the past. Is he keeping because of injury to someone else?

Green ton makes tough call even tougher

They might even have it in mind to give Joe a chance to find some form so he’s good to go once Warner does come back. .. there’s potentially lot’s of stuff in play here methinks.

Green ton makes tough call even tougher

Yes indeed. Actually, now that you mention it, that is a big, big factor. It would have to have some weight with the selectors you’d think.
