That charming guy who tells you it is ok to wear a Wallabies jersey to the State of Origin. Then we grab a beer after the game to watch the Toronto Blue jays play at 3am before we are ready for the Superbowl!

He's back! The Kid has ridden his horse back from that dangerous injury-enforced sunset. And here we are, hoping the layoff hasn't slowed Billy…
People are sweating a little less each day, Easter is just around the corner (which means Xmas is practically a week away) and rugby…
Not a bad suggestion at all. All Star game would be more accurate in terms of the form players of the season at that point, and gives everyone a good exciting match before the big one
The NRL must look to the NFL for solutions
The exact same concern runs through many of us. It’s not without a solution though! I’m not sure of it, but surely taking steps in the NZ direction is the key. Ireland has done it, look at their resurgence over the past few years, because they’ve taken steps to replicate the approach NZ takes when it comes to running rugby as a whole. The Kiwis have national guidelines, running from grassroots, schoolboys, all the way up to the All Blacks. Why has it taken Australia so long to take notice of what works?!
I think it’s important that we stop treating rugby as some sort of premium sport too. For as long as I remember rugby has never been available free-to-air. I’ve only ever been able to watch Tests, because we could never afford cable.
There’s a lot of problems as Ryan has stated. And it’s so disappointing because it’s a fantastic sport that Australia, alongside our NZ brothers, should be world leaders at.
Time to pull heads out of the sand and admit Australian rugby is dying
Joe I hope you are 100% right! Player’s like him are once in a generation, the longer we have him the better! And no better sight than seeing him in the QLD #1, with Boyd on the wing and Inglis ‘centre’- stage. Just can’t help but feel a little trepidation of the thought another breakdown. It’s always much more difficult seeing a player retire due to injury, or worse still, a lack of form. Let’s hope this season he gets to do it of his own accord.
Billy The Kid should just ride off into the sunset
Gents! Complete oversight on the title! I think I’ll claim beginner’s mistake on that one. Mulligan??
It's the most wonderful time of the year, so let's learn to love all the codes
Your articles are always fascinating Nicholas, I really am fascinated with the stats and conclusions you come up with. Brings such a precise scope on the game and its players. George Smith has been an idol of mine since the age of 13, and I’m hoping he can bring what we lack from the departure of the completely underrated Liam Gill. Here’s hoping
George Smith still rates among world rugby's best
As a long time Reds fan, I must admit I’m super excited for a team littered with both invaluable international, even world class experience and the necessary green enthusiasm of youth. I just cannot get the All star brumby team of a few years ago though that fizzled maddeningly. Can Quade operate without Genia? Can Smith maintain all season long? Will Andrew Ready inherit that No.2? I hope Mr Stiles is the operator we’ve been waiting for since Ewen walked through the Suncorp tunnel
Quade Cooper, George Smith headline Reds squad
I’m intrigued about the teams not mentioned- such as the could be smokies of the Warriors. Signing Foran is a massive plus, I mean you’ve got basically the kiwi national team running around. But for some reason they still don’t have that aura worthy of putting down a bill at the TAB to have them clinch the title.
And do we assume that this year Canberra are ready for the title? They came damn close and have kept so much of that same side, but you get the feeling coaches will have worked out how to shut down that edge of Leilua and Rapana. Maybe keep Hodgson honest too.
I think I’ll look for the sexy outsider to bring us a controversial victory- too early to call a Titan’s victory? Let them fly under the radar and hope to catch some of that sand and sea coloured confetti in September!
Close but no cigar: Which NRL teams are another year away from contention?
No thats all true as well Epiquin. Sydney is a much greater market, perhaps that’s why it’s so strange with the choice of venues that occurs? I’m from Brisbane, we are a one team town, though we still have the range of sports choice. Sydney teams should have a greater inner city spectacle to help. Like the great derby’s of the world- Man u v Man City, for example. Again EPL is different, it’s a religion over there much like rugby for NZ. Two old clubs like Easts v Souths though, foundation clubs should see a bigger attendance for sure. So the theory behind having less weeks in the year being played could anchor the importance of those games
