Gee having either would be nice!

West Coast vs Melbourne: Friday night forecast

Granted it was a tough situation to be in. You wanted May and Hogan would have gone eventually.

But it also speaks to a bit of arrogance and getting way ahead of themselves. No question they over-rated a kid in Witherden after a good finals run.

The bigger mistake in my opinion was the expectation placed on McDonald. A backman who had the luxury of playing alongside Hogan for the majority of the season. He’s now had proper work put into him and has been found out.

So basically Double J, but for footy. Sold.

Plans revealed for new AFLB league to begin in 2020

That would make more sense.

I find the comment layout and formatting on this site to be a bit of a mess. It’s hard to tell who’s replying to who etc.

Ten significant digits three rounds into the 2019 AFL season

The roar hasn’t pulled a Fairfax and outsourced to NZ have they?

As an Eagles fan (I think?) you might have seen the ‘racism’ article from a few weeks ago where they included a photo of Rioli in an article about Ryan. Irony is alive and well.

Ten significant digits three rounds into the 2019 AFL season

Ryan is clearly in support of the rule. I don’t see your point.

On the tackles and ‘pressure’ ESPN’s most recent podcast has a great breakdown on what that actually means. Apparently WC has the lowest pressure rating, but also has one of the lowest pressure ratings against them. So their differential is still in the positive. Where as Melbourne has the highest but also the highest against with their contested game. The Eagles are playing a different game.

Champion Data’s player / list rankings are a joke, but everything else they do is very interesting.

No kidding. Yeo is one of the absolute best two-way mids in the game. I mean hell he’s played on and beaten players before.
Yeo is still getting back to match fitness and foot injuries can be tricky. He’s still yet to hit peak form.

Eight talking points from AFL Round 3

It was a joke about your Cats’ historical performances against West Coast in Grand Finals.

Not my hot take on Premierships in April.

The Eagles have the flag at their mercy

As a West Coast supporter, I for one am firmly in support of playing the Cats in the GF.

The Eagles have the flag at their mercy

Here here. North fans have such a gigantic chip on their shoulders. Everyone is conspiring against them. When the truth is, no one really cares.

North Melbourne's worst losses under Brad Scott

Coniglio with ~28 disposals a game, 23 goals for the season and an average of 5 tackles in 2018. If he simply maintains that output he’ll have a massive year.

The fact that he wasn’t even in the AA squad was criminal. In what was otherwise a fairly uncontroversial team, the Coniglio snub and Franklin’s appointment as AA captain were baffling decisions.

STEVIE J: My top four players to watch this AFL season

I’ve heard that West Australian Marcus Adams was happy to go absolutely anywhere if it meant leaving the Bulldogs, from the horse’s mouth no less.

STEVIE J: My top four players to watch this AFL season

No kidding, last years Grand Final was a total snoozefest.

2019 AFL season preview: Adelaide Crows

It’s car-crash TV, obviously staged to an extent, lowest common denominator type stuff sure, but honestly, it’s pretty fun.

Much like a terrible movie, half the fun is talking shit about it when you’re watching it with someone else.

The solution that could solve the twilight saga

I agree that the most frustrating thing about it is the AFL’s prevaricating. If they want to do it, then do it. Just don’t say the fans want it or that ‘we’re all for the fans’. Outline why it’s a good idea, that they’ll get significantly more viewers in a later timeslot in northern states, that it enables them to create a better ‘spectacle’ (vomit) etc. etc. If you can’t outline why it’s a good idea, how can you expect supporters to get behind it?

And the twilight grand final is the perfect example of that. They’re trying to have it both ways. The game will start in the day so its kind of like a day grand final and yet it ends in the dark, so it’s sort of like a night game. It’s a nothing timeslot.

The AFL/media rights holders obviously would like a night game, but again they’re trying to have it both ways.

The solution that could solve the twilight saga

I think there has to be qualifiers on the Hawks threepeat, which is why I don’t rate it on the same level as Brisbane. All interstate opponents at their home ground, the introduction of free-agency and the hollowing out of the national draft by expansion clubs, which made it harder for rivals to draft/use quality picks to trade in talent. Hawthorn built a formidable core of high draft pick players in the early aughts and took full advantage of it.

Obviously still an impressive achievement, but just not on the Brisbane level for mine. As i’m sure you’re painfully aware they managed to beat the Pies twice and a dominant h/a Essendon in Melbourne. That’s just crazy.

2019 AFL season preview: West Coast Eagles

What’s your start date there? I would have thought 1990, so that’s Hawthorn with 6 and Collingwood with 6.

WC/Geelong, equal with 7 apiece and the best ratio has to be Hawthorn easily right? 5/6.

I remembered reading this article last year, but you made me second guess myself and pull up a list of premiers as well.

The best two clubs of the AFL era (and no, neither is Hawthorn)

2019 AFL season preview: West Coast Eagles

Haha shhhhh, don’t let everyone in on it. I like my team to be a juggernaut that somehow no one sees coming or rates.

But while we’re at it, you might as well chuck in most grand final and finals appearances in the AFL era.

2019 AFL season preview: West Coast Eagles

Just to clarify, is a Bulldogs supporter insinuating that WC fans are poor? That’s a bit rich.

2019 AFL season preview: West Coast Eagles

Kerr struggled as he lost all of the support around him and his body continuously broke down.

WC won a flag in 06′ without a forward line and a backline which was good but not early 90s/2018 good. That’s a pretty formidable midfield.

Geelong was a great team with an amazing spread of talent, but Ablett aside I don’t think any of their midfielders were on the Judd/Cousins/Kerr/Voss/Akermanis/Black level.

It’s between Brisbane and WC for me, with WC taking it as the only team in this discussion with a genuine gun ruckman. Collingwood might get there with their spread and Grundy, but only time will tell.

Why Collingwood’s midfield is now the best ever

You can’t call anything the best ever until they’ve actually shown something.

Collingwood’s midfield was shown up 3 times this year by the un-fancied WC midfield. A nice list on paper doesn’t mean a lot until it’s proven on the field.

Of all years to write a speculative article, this would have to be the silliest. Surely Geelong’s dismal season can’t already forgotten.

Why Collingwood’s midfield is now the best ever

Jetta who is unfairly maligned by WC morons (read – the FB page) has had a great two years and has grown up a lot.

He also played out the rest of the game with a calf strain in the second quarter and couldn’t run properly.

When interviewed he said that he kept it from most of the team and only told Duggan and Cole, asking them to take the quicker guys.

Duggan’s reply ‘We’ve got you Jetts’ is just a brilliant illustration of the team’s cohesion this year.

I just love this team. The most proud I’ve ever been of this club.

What a brilliant grand final fought between two great clubs. Unfortunately there can be only one winner and thankfully this one is ours.

AFL finals diary: It’s what you’ll forget that makes this grand final the best

WCE very nearly got Tim Kelly with one of those 2nd rounders and might well still get him.

I honestly couldn’t believe the naysayers to that trade from day one. How often is a first round pick that valuable? Every draft is supposed to be a ‘super draft’, you’re better off developing 4 good players than banking on one superstar.

For GC to win the trade WC needed to finish in the bottom few on the ladder. And GC needed to massively improve. It was a crazy gamble by GC.

I cannot see GC surviving. They’re just padding the decent clubs and draining revenue from Brisbane.

They’re not GWS and Qld is not Sydney. If the AFL spent a quarter of the money they have on GC and instead injected it into Brisbane, the Lions would be a powerhouse by now.

The 2017 pick swap that could set the Eagles up for back-to-back premierships

Bah Humbug, it was an incredible grand final with so many great stories and sub plots throughout. It was dramatic and different players stood up when it counted.

I suppose people will complain about anything.

A close grand final does not a classic make

If I remember correctly, the AFL already pays for the base travel costs of the clubs. Besides broadcast dollars, the majority of Victorian clubs are reliant on the pokies. I don’t believe any non-Victorian clubs utilise them? Perhaps Brisbane? I have enormous respect for North Melbourne and now (finally) Collingwood for getting out of them.

Broadcast dollars are obviously the lifeblood of the AFL and more eyes are better for everyone. The climate has substantially changed since the 80s and now the overwhelming majority of WA/SA residents support their own teams and are highly unlikely to switch back to a VFL team their parents might have supported back in day. The other major factor propping up struggling clubs is the tax on the big ones, Hawthorn, Richmond, West Coast, Freo and Adelaide, which I think is fair enough.

Regardless, breaking away from the AFL would be absolutely ridiculous and remove one of my favourite features of our competition – that it is Australia’s only real national football competition (that people care about, hello A-league). GWS has merit, Brisbane has a dormant fan base and Sydney is doing better than it ever has off the field.

I think most people would concede that there are too many teams in Melbourne and GC is unnecessary at best and siphoning money from Brisbane at worst. I’d roll them into one of St Kilda/North Melbourne and base them out of Tasmania. They’d play the majority of their games in Tassie, 4-5 in Victoria and barely have to travel besides.

A more equitable system would see non-Victorian teams play all of their games in Victoria, at the G. If that hurts the AFL/MCC too bad, they’ve got the GF for another 40 years.

Another idea which isn’t so crazy is a best of 3 series. Sure watching Hawthorn for 3 weeks would be nauseating, but you’d also get 150 thousand plus and it would give those without the means to fork out thousands of dollars in flights and tickets to see their club on the biggest day(s) of the season.

A West Coast win would be a victory for fairness
