Sounds like my comment was triggered by your original one.

Till I saw your comment now, I couldn’t remember where I saw or heard it first, but credit where it’s due 🙂

Reds tame the mighty Lions, thousands left disappointed

Food for thought; I just checked the Red’s schedule . TL;DR – They could top the Australian conference.

A) A realistic chance of winning
2 games against the SunWolves (H & A)
1 against the Rebels (H)

B) Where they’re a 50:50
1 against the Blues (A)
1 against the Waratahs (H)

C) Where they have no realistic chance
1 against the ‘Canes (A)
1 against the Highlanders (H)

FWIW, I think they will pick up the points against either one of the Blues or Rebels – I put the Rebels and Blues in the categories I did, because of the Home / Away advantage.

Fair enough, too, Joseph.
I mean, the Lions had just come off a 29 to NIL win, but let’s be honest that was only the Waratahs

The Lord (David to his friends) thinks so

Folau return could end Australia's Super Rugby drought

Given the amount of yellow, I reckon a good 4K or 5K of that crowd were Hurricane fans, to the extent I would swear I heard at least one set of the ‘Hurricanes’ chant on my Foxtel coverage. There’s contingent of Melbourne based kiwis, plus a bunch of others would be on a easter weekend break.

With regard to Mafi, he’s a good reminder that stats can mean anything. One of the commentators was going on about his ‘run metres’, but he was often running for 20 or 30 metres before he got to the defensive line. As someone else said above, the rest of the team need to do their share.

Amosa (the Reds hooker) was the link man there, he’s popping up everywhere.

Speed and intent by both sides. I’m in Australia, any chance of either of the teams in the 7:30 game watching this before they play ?

second game in a row againstt he Canes where they failed to score in the 2nd 40 minutes. What does that say about the coaching staff ?
Not much, except more proof that that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilbert_principle is alive and well (i.e. Larkham’s promotion to the Wallbaies squad of coaches is designed to get him out of the Brumbies coaching box).

Brumbies knocked out, Australia's disastrous Super Rugby season over

On the other hand put the brumbies in the Africa 1 conference, and they’re last behind the Kings (Same number of points, but I give the Kings a legup because they’ve won 1 more game).

You can play silly buggers with the numbers, but this is what it is at the moment. Hopefully if / when the culling process is sorted, we get a better draw, with less bias between conferences.

PS I say bias, even though it’s an unintended side-effect of the wish to to reduce travel and the perceived need for local derbies for TV audiences.

The Wrap: The Australian conference finally gets interesting

Apart from the argument, given by others, that the Lions can only play who they are drawn to play, I would think they would be more concerned about the lack of games against the harder sides 9as measured by results and competition).

I don’t have a copy from previous weeks, but I see that we now have TWO conferences where the leading team ranks below the Auckland Blues on a points basis…
Auckland Blues are on 31 points after 11 games
Africa 1 is headed by the Stormers on 26 Points after 10 games
Australia is headed by The Brumbies on 19 points after 10 games

A more depressing way of looking at it is that the Brumbies are equal with the Kings who are bottom of the Africa 2.

BTW, the only result that counts is the Final (just like last year !!)

So who do you suggest as Cheika’s replacement?

The Wallabies' job in New Zealand just got harder

Thanks, Harry, and congratulations on a fine (and relevant) piece of writing.

Michael Cheika and the SS Waratah: A story of a Wallabies coach and a shipwrecked cruisliner

“You saw the way he tried to run that Test match until the NSW five-eighth, Foley, stuffed him up last weekend.”

Classy work, Marto.

"Worst signing I have ever seen in my life"

Replace them all (coach and players) with the Women’s 7’ssquad. Nicole Beck tackles harder than most of the Wallabies did last night

Sack Michael Cheika? No way, he's the best man for the job

Shouldn’t someone let David Lord know that his account has been hacked ?

Sack Michael Cheika? No way, he's the best man for the job

NZ already has the North Island and theSouth Island… What do they call that chunk of desert to the left ? Mouth Island !!!

I know, it’s an oldie, but makes a change from the sheep shagging jokes my Aussie kids tell me after every Bledisloe 🙂

Kiwi-Nobbling: The only way forward for the Wallabies

The worst part about this headline is that it’s true.

I'm not under pressure: Cheika

I think he means the angles showing it occurred out in the open, in full view of the ref and assistant. And the (lack of) follow up footage showing the (lack of) Wallaby on-field complaint, as well as the (lack of) official followup by the wallabies.

Having said all that, Franks was fairly well beaten at scrum time, wasn’t he !

SANZAAR right not to cite Franks: Hansen

It was the Roosters. LOL.

Wallabies and Roosters face off in hybrid game

SP,
I don’t think Hooper is playing against instructions; for a start he has played that “non traditional” role for many coaches at both state and international level. That leaves me with the obvious question…
Why have so many persisted with Hooper as a non traditional number 7.

I think it goes back to a point others have made; the lack of depth of Australian Rugby. Even with my prejudice against his style of play, I would be hard pressed to leave him out of the Wallabies let alone Waratahs. Whether you would do that comes down to a judgement call on whether his replacement would add enough in the traditional role to allow others to do their job better,; A simple example would be whether a better scrummager (enabling a) a straighter front row and b) a better platform for the backline) would bring more to the team than Hooper’s general play where he does excel.

It’s not just Hooper… As alluded elsewhere, it’s has become a jigsaw, trying to fit the 23 best players available, regardless of position, into a cohesive game day squad. That’s why you get a fullback playing on the wing, a centre playing fullback etc…

Five talking points from the Wallabies vs England third Test

See http://goalkickers.co.za/

It uses something called the the Nel-Theron system to collates a number of variables, including the number of kicks attempted and some measures of degree of difficulty (so some guy kicking 6 from 6 dead in front doesn’t have as high a final score as someone kicking 9 from 10 from the sidelines).

However, the key is that Foley on a raw 57% is the worst of the top 10 international kickers.

I would add
4. Sorting out the loose forwards

Starting with Hooper. I’ll say it up front, that I don’t like him as a player. That is based solely on his apparent inability to perform the basics of his position. For example, he took the blindside flank, but completely misread the play at the 5 metre scrum, which lead to Vunipola’s try at the 45th minute.

However, he appears to be an excellent back line player. Given he play’s so wide so often, I have suggested elsewhere that he put on some weight and play centre…. perhaps he could be that mythical 2nd play maker 🙂

Five talking points from the Wallabies vs England third Test

McMahon hunted brilliantly in tandem with openside Michael Hooper who put in another rampant effort. Their terrorising of the world’s angriest fullback Mike Brown was a joy to watch.

Hooper is an excellent Rugby player. He is not a good loose forward. A typical example of his ‘mastery of the position’ was where he went missing on a 5 metre scrum, which let Vunipola score (around 45th minute). Given Hooper was packing on the blindside, he straight out went to sleep.

I often saw him standing back from the breakdown waving his arms around (directing traffic or what ?). If he had a little more weight, I’d suggest him for centre, while selectors went looking for a real number 7.

A hometown villain amongst the Wallaby heroes

That is just plain mean 🙂

England whitewashes the Wallabies

“We did not alienate enough readers. So this is a religious meditation.”

I’m new to this satire business, but … you talk of religion and rugby as two distinct entities, when we all know they are the one and the same. Any one can see the obvious
“The game they play in heaven”
plus
“A slice of heaven” (from the world’s best dog related animated movie ever, Footrot Flats)
equals
New Zealand Rugby.

Note that these are often interpreted as meaning All Black Rugby, but this is an incorrect interpretation. All Black Rugby is merely the outward manifestation of the religious beliefs of those thousands of kiwis who, carefully swaddled in All Black onesies, have as their first memories the sounds of the weekly religious observances at suburban and school football grounds every Saturday.

A key reason for it’s wide spread acceptance is that, unlike many other religions, New Zealand Rugby has no place for discrimination by race, creed, gender or colour.; For example, my sister was famous in her circles for constantly pointing out Mark Shaw’s selection errors when he was coaching the Kapiti College 1st 15. That most of her commentary revolved around the selection and coaching of a certain team member not unrelated to her by birth was (according to her) totally irrelevant.

Cheers
