You’re right, I am misremembering it a bit- thought it was after the raider’s late try. Was actually after Cronk’s try on 31 minutes.

Why was Cameron Smith such a divisive player?

May I also suggest a largely overlooked incident in the 2016 prelim v Canberra, where he deliberately dove and landed on Croker’s knee after he had scored a try. Croker was cooked from then on for the game and took most of a season to get over it. The refs didn’t even look at it such was his standing. Canberra fans will never forget.
Brilliant player though- his understanding of the game is unrivalled. His passing and decision making from dummy half was the best it can get.

You’ll have to completely deconstruct the under-age comps for this to work. Why would clubs be bothered having any junior structure in place if they will just lose their best junior talent. Drafts work in the AFL, NFL etc because the professional clubs do not have any junior programs.
Even the Roosters and Manly rely on some junior talent to come through.

We need an NRL draft now

Top stuff Harry. 2000 was arguably the height of the Brumbies- Bruce was the place to be. That night at the final was the coldest I’ve ever been (even colder than Oslo in January)- swear it’s 5 degrees colder there than anywhere else in Canberra. Was warmer when it snowed the next day. Don’t remember the idiots in body paint though Ron (Is that you Fergo? Forza ANUFC).

Canberra: A footy love story

I would think that any player who has Slater behind them, and Cronk (up to last year of course) and Smith directing them around will be a better player for it. Whether this is on Bellamy or not, we’ll see in due course when it’s just Smith running the show this season.

Third Party Agreements: Should they be limited or scrapped altogether?

Yeah, but you need to look then at how often in the last 12 months has Australia had to bowl first on roads. They have had to bowl first in 6 of the past 7 tests and conceded a lot of runs in Dubai, Melbourne and Sydney when the decks were at their best for batting. South Africa also rattled up the runs in the last test at Jo’burg when none of them wanted to be there.

What happened to the Aussie attack?

I would suggest that Finch is opening because he is more vulnerable to top quality spin early on than top quality pace. Opening is probably his best spot for a sub-continent test. Agree that if he plays in Oz or anywhere else though, he’d be a good no.5- if they have room for him there.
I would say that Renshaw or either Burns or SMarsh will be opening come the first innings in Adelaide.

Finch as a Test opener is a mistake

Hey Baz and BA- you may have missed it in skimming but Beardy does say it must come from a play the ball inside your own half to be worth 5 points. Not from an intercept or turnover ball.

Four rule changes for rugby league

Have to disagree wholeheartedly about Ryan- he is a great distributor who looks eminently comfortable on the ball. I suggest you are the one who is uncomfortable with watching himi pass it instead of hoofing it.
Totally agree re Jedi, Wright and Smith though- they were the problem in the end.

From Rio to Russia: Did the Socceroos surge, stagnate or slide backwards in the last four years?

And I really didn’t like our World Cup. Far too defensive. We have the talent to play Ange’s attacking philosophy on the big stage against top teams. Every team struggles against those who park the bus- particularly without a top striker.
Ange had a vision and the old soccer media trashed it.

Never been a fan of governing bodies allowing players to take a pay cut to stay together- distorts the competition, dilutes the point of a salary cap and equalisation etc. That’s a gripe for another time though.
Cotchin, Riewoldt and Rance still have a good 4, maybe 5 years left. No chance are they retiring soon to free up money. Also the salaries now will all have uplift fees as the cap increases- or they should sack their managers. You may end up like Geelong now in 2 or 3 years- a handful of aging champions, no middle tier, and kids who may or may not be any good in 2 years time with no top draft talent to draw on. One or two injuries to key players away from missing the eight.

Mega finals preview column: Who can topple the Tiges?

Which players do you think will go now though- Richmond do have to be salary cap compliant. Reckon you’ll have to shed 2 mid-tiers and a young-un. Wouldn’t be surprised if the likes of Butler and Castagna get the shits and ask to leave. And maybe being dropped will see Ellis go as well. Should be an interesting October at Punt Rd.

It should be noted that the Japanese coach was sacked shortly after the win in Saitama, largely for betraying Japan’s traditional way of playing football, regardless of the win.
Something to keep in the back of everyone’s mind when reading articles about mid-tier nations trying to establish a way of playing football to win against the top nations, not just getting there.

Another reason there are fewer Canberra locals at the Raiders is the failed push from the Raiders board from a few years ago when they tried really hard to get better cap discounts for home developed players. Little financial incentive left now in a pathwasy like that. Focus now is on small town NSW kids (i.e Riverina/South Coast) who see Canberra as the big city lights, and Hodgson’s mates from the UK where Canberra is viewed as a warm, exotic destination but also not too different to DPR Yorkshire. Also a small line of players coming from the historic contacts at Souths Logan and in NZ which is good to see.

The salary cap is socialist garbage and should be binned

It really does show just how many great fullbacks have graced our Oz fields over the years.
Badge was brilliant too. Although I would say that with my one green eye. Fully endorse Jack and Brasher too, have a massive soft spot for the Tigers (although if they best us in ’89 maybe not so much…).

Gary’s comparison re Maradona v Pele not a bad one at all- I’d take Maradona (Mullins) each time too. That try v Brisbane was the greatest individual league moment of the 90s imo.

Billy Slater retires: He's the greatest modern fullback, but does that make him the best of all time?

I’d take Brett Mullins every time. Slater very good but had some problematic moments.

It’s a shame Bayley Fritsch is too old to win it- he’s arguably had the best year out of all of the first year players.

Why Witherden will beat Stephenson to the Rising Star

No aversion to a new stadium at all- the Govt were almost there to build on the old Civic Pool site and then the Feds came around and said they weren’t paying for any of the Mr Fluffy compo. So that put back a new stadium by 10-15 years. But now, somehow, the money will be found if we can #bringbackthecosmos

A better stadium won't put bums on seats for the Brumbies

Too right. Was -1 at the start of the Raiders game on Saturday night. There’s a reason the Raiders want to to play home games in June-August on Sunday arvos.

Don’t forget Croatia looking very good at the top of Group D- should be enough motivation for the French to try and win to ensure top spot- and for Denmark to go for the win and be as open as they were against the Roos.

World Cup tips and predictions: Day 12

I would still have Kruse, with able help from Aziz, bombing along his side to start the game, but bring Arzani on at 50/55 minutes. And Mass, Mooy and Rogic to start in the middle. Jedi not needed unless we do get in front by 2 late on and just need to hold the fort.

Dear Bert, it's time to unleash Daniel Arzani

Not picking up any cards at all this game was a godsend.

Did Bert van Marwijk's tactics cost the Socceroos a win against Denmark?

Teams like Thailand, Syria etc in Asia pack the midfield and park the bus against us, force us into the proactive position which we aren’t always comfortable with, particularly on pitches that aren’t world cup standard (i.e. most outside of Japan/Korea and West Asia), and then try to break on a mistake.

France, Denmark etc play to their style and don’t really worry about what we do. France preferred tight lines, not parking the bus but sitting back a bit and man-marking the number 10, which meant less space. Denmark bypass the midfield and hoof it forward for Eriksen to get second phase ball, which means more midfield space for Mooy and Rogic.

Denmark had nothing in the second half bar their hoofing which we defended really well. The gripe I have isn’t all-out attack, as we still needed to maintain shape. It was the lack of pressing their defenders on the ball in the last 15 minutes. It was depressing to watch us stolidly defend from behind halfway when we were have great success on the break against a tiring defence.

Did Bert van Marwijk's tactics cost the Socceroos a win against Denmark?

Leckie third best for mine. Dangerous and combined very well with Rogic and Mooy. Just messed up a few balls in final third that he should do better with- much like everyone really.

Did Bert van Marwijk's tactics cost the Socceroos a win against Denmark?

Yeah I did. Irvine or Mass should have come on for him at 65 and really driven the team forward. Mile’s touch really deserted him as he got tired. Good first half though.
