Nice piece.
Really looking forward to seeing you have a crack – it’s not often the general sporting public get’s a glimpse of elite judoka so I’ll be soaking it all up.
Best of luck to you

Australian Judo rep Ivo Dos Santos on living the Olympic dream

“The bottom line is that players have a duty of care not to injure their fellow players.”
Very true. The trouble is that players are conditioned from a young age to hurt an opponent. “It’s the nature of the game son. We gotta destroy those (insert arch-nemesis)”. This is where cheap shots come from – players know if/when they cross the line with respect to the written rules, but somewhere in their mind are lesons learned from their junior days when Davo the half-back’s boozy dad was coach. It’s a culture thing, and it’s not just a rugby league problem – concussion discussions and the bounty scandal at the Saints have bought a tonne of pressure on Goodell and the NFL over the last few years.

NRL big hits: Inglis' shoulder charge and the Blues' next coach

I think you’re directing that at the wrong person fussball. I don’t care what anyone calls these sports, and was simply pointing out that getting upset about how other sports refer to themselves is a waste of energy and time. The semantics over naming were brought up by Jim.

The Ray Price statue fiasco is another PR disaster

McBriar is a punter, ie special teams.

Could Jarryd Hayne make it in the NFL?

I think you miss my point jim. It is just a word, it exists, and has for some time. It wasn’t “invented” by football, and you can’t trademark it I’m afraid, Chucking a strop about inconsequential percieved “injustices” like this, as mentioned earlier, does nothing for football culture in australia.

We do like to think that the chant is somehow unique and australian – but isn’t it just a cover version of with Aussie taking the place of “oggie”? Supposedly originated in Cornwall?

Aussie Aussie Aussie, bored bored bored?

Wholeheartedly agree. I’m not a particularly insightful road cycling fan,but even I can see that in recent years Cadel gets tagged pretty heavily.
Watching him during some of those stages: he know’s he’ losing time to someone; he has to do something about it; noone is gonna help him. Sporting drama at it’s finest.

And as an avid mountainbiker I have a lot of respect for soemone who has reached the top in two drastically different sports.

Why Cadel needs to be shown a little more R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Not that I disagree, but the coach of a team that’s recently been spanked extolling the virtues of the spanker is not exactly unheard of.

All Blacks No.9 Smith could match Genia

In fantasy world yeah. We can’t seem to get any sort of national level comp running though.

Australian under 20s crash at Rugby World Cup

Slightly off topic, but can anyone detail exactly what the current scrum laws are at the junior level in aus? I just remember as a teen playing behind what I assumed where great scrums, then moving from colts to opens it was a huge transition with regard to scrum power – and that was from No 8, can imagine the shock a 19 year old prop would get packing against a seasoned scrummager for the first time. My club at the time had a standard pattern of having great colts props, who would disappear into 5th grade for 3-4 years when they made the switch to opens.
Do other rugby nations develop their forwards the same way – ie in tissue paper till the age of 19?

“A fish rots from the head down”.

What?

Will courage or culture triumph in State of Origin Game 2?

Always liked Haskell, he was stuck behind guys like Easter for too long. So, evidence that super rugby breeds better backrowers?

Wales turn to Rebel Delve

+1
Big fan of McCaw, has the skills of a tyro in the body of a number 8 almost. But I believe he is sometimes afforded latitude based on perceived skills.

I think he’s pretty well respected in Aus and SA. Spend a bit of time with English rugby fans though, he is reviled up there, the hate is strong with those ones…

Deans hails Pocock as best ever

mania, “richie is a master and doesnt cheat anywhere near enough. is he as bad as … schalkBurger?

Whoa there, I thought burger was just a freak specimen with a huge motor and aggression to match, only to find out he cheated to get those things… Damn

Deans hails Pocock as best ever

First super rugby player in a northern hemisphere team?

Wales turn to Rebel Delve

“Certainly, posing with heavy duty assault hardware may not be the kind of clean-cut, Uncle-Toby image that the Olympic team wants to cultivate. But if every Olympian is supposed to be sporting a Kieren Perkins shit-eating grin, then someone should have shot Jumping Jai Taurima in the back of the head”.

Gold

D'Arcy a dickhead, but this time he did nothing wrong

Agreed, he put in a great performance with the time he had

Australia vs Wales: Wallabies regain form to down late-surging Welsh

Ok.. I thought that the stories coming out of the states were that only the “face” girls are earning anything approahing a respectable salary, and stems from sponsor deals and LFL related modeling. Player salaries were apparently abolished beforethe start of the 2011 season
http://offthebench.nbcsports.com/2011/04/21/ricks-cafe-a-disgruntled-lingerie-football-league-player-speaks-out/

http://www.baltimorebrew.com/2010/10/04/lingerie-football-league-players-paid-less-than-8-an-hour/

This has apparently been something of a simmering issue for some time with a number of legal battles under way with disgruntled former players. The general impression is that the league has a pretty tight rein on information coming out, with a media department issuing some pretty broad statements like “fastest growing women’s sport in the world” – do they mean women’s football, women’s arena football, or specifically the lingerie league? And does “world” mean the actual world, or just the american definition of the world. Hard to make sweeping statements about growth when the league is still in it’s infancy. (apparently stems from a Business Week magazine quote “one of the fastest growing sports leagues in the United States”).

Of further interest is the fact that the 2012 US season has been scrapped – the offical line being so that the league can phase into a summer season instead of autumn/winter, and so they can focus on vigourous expansion into Canada and Aus (yay?). How can they take a season off if these girls are contracted for more than the average AFL/NRL player?

I’ve seen a few games when it first started up – as a young straight man who’s mad about american football, I should be their prime audience, but I’m not interested. I have no real problem with the image/product they are trying to sell, but if male arena football and IFL players are wearing full protective gear in their games, surely having these women play under full-contact rules with such limited protection is leaving the door open for lawsuits?

Apologies if I sound a little negative here. Perhaps someone with better resources could look into this further?

Blood, sweat and leers: a night at Lingerie Football

Ouchies. I can undersand the arguement, but people didn’t seem to hate Stiles so much at the time did they?
I played a few seasons around him at UQ before he became a regular in the reds, and remember thinking he was saweet. Of coure, I was 18 and incredibly stupid at the time. Heck, I can even remember thinkin he was pretty mobile and had great hands, hahah.
Makes me realise how crap I was…

Faingaa twins to talk Wallabies to victory

Ok, i admit I’m perhaps a little pre-disposed to disliking the guy, and am probably broken-recording a bit. But performing ok in a really bad side last night isn’t reason for me to change my mind. I guess I’m just not that fussed about what he brings to the back row mix. (will try to be slightly more even handed about the matter in future. maybe)

Wallabies team: Pocock to captain Australia vs Scotland

I’ve said it before… But Dave Dennis? Groan

Wallabies team: Pocock to captain Australia vs Scotland

McCalman has had a fair few bites at the apple now and hasn’t done much with it.

But, with that said, I used to find Higginbotham a bit of a waste too, and he’s proven to be damn handy over the last 2 seasons.

I guess it’s possible that guys like Dennis, Mowen and McCalman make themselves worthy on the training paddock and in the gym…

Ben Mowen is the Wallabies' missing link

I don’t really understand this high rating of Dave Dennis that some have? He’s a solid super rugby player no doubt, but just kinda…vanilla

Ben Mowen is the Wallabies' missing link

Rumours are he will end up in V8s,which is an understandable fit I guess, he’s lived in Europe since he was a kid and presumable wants to jut come home for a bit, new family and all.
That’d be quite an adjustment though, goin from the world of MotoGP to V8s, wretch…

Casey Stoner's retirement stuns the motorsport industry

I got the impression from NFL writers that sourcing semi-retired kickers from Australia has kinda run it’s course as a scouting option and we probably won’t see too much of it in the future…?
