Isn’t commentating a perfect job, allowing him to get to plenty of matches and watch all the Qlders up close? He’s already banned 8, or 10, or whatever so he doesn’t need to spend much time on selections. Might as well get out to games and check out the opposition.

Should Kevin Walters be commentating?

Abolish feeder teams? One of the reason OZ RL has been so strong for so long is that each team traditionally represented a district with its own league and ran RL from U6s right through to the top. Whether you call them feeder teams, Reserve Grade, State Cup, Ron Massey Cup or whatever, they are part of the development pathway for players.

One of the problems with Brit RL is that an area smaller than Blacktown has 4 SL teams, Wigan, St Helens, Warrington and Widnes, and each of these is a completely separate RL organisation. Our feeder teams/district structures are one of our main strengths.

What about all the NRL-contracted players who don’t make the 17 each week? Without some feeder team arrangement, some of them could go months without playing.

Should the NRL adopt a relegation system? (Part 2)

Beat me to it.

Should the NRL adopt a relegation system? (Part 2)

I said “could have” which was true.I would assume also that any P&R would have to include Qld teams replaced by Qld teams and NSW by NSW otherwise you could end up with no Qld teams. How would your plan address that possibility?

Should the NRL adopt a relegation system?

You obviously didn’t watch the Middle 8s in the Brit RL last year if you think P&R will increase the excitement level. After the first 2 weeks of that P&R tournament Leigh had lost against both of their SL opponents despite their 30-game (or was it 30 home-game?) winning run in 2nd Div. From then on it was just dire.

The only team with a hope of gaining promotion was Bradford who had only been relegated at the start of the year. The most intense competition at the bottom of SL over the last 5 years was whether Bradford or Wakey would go broke first.

Should the NRL adopt a relegation system?

No criticism of you for raising the idea, but I’ve seen this same P&R argument going on at seemingly every Brit RL forum for years. The new system in SL is basically just a half-thought-out gimmick to try to promote some interest in a D-grade comp.

Should the NRL adopt a relegation system?

No to transfer fees. A poorer club flogs off a few promising juniors then what? They can’t spend any more than their salary cap unless they want to use the extra cash to pay transfer fees. They’ll have to pay bigger transfer fees because they will have trouble attracting quality players – because they’ve just sold off their rising young stars. People think that transfer fees will help poorer clubs with large junior bases but they will ultimately just force those clubs to compete in inflated player markets.

Should the NRL adopt a relegation system?

I hate hearing this same old whine about “juniors being poached” by other clubs. I’m an old Wests Magpies fan and never once did I expect our players to stay and play for beer money when they could get a decent wage at another club. Players sign a contract, not a lifelong oath of serfdom, like they did back in the pre-Denis Tutty days.

Should the NRL adopt a relegation system?

Far more than a potential problem. Have you ever looked at the lineups of State Cup teams. Some of them would lose half their team if promoted because the players are already NRL-contracted.

Should the NRL adopt a relegation system?

Players already have a huge incentive to play well in the State Cups. It’s called an NRL contract.

Should the NRL adopt a relegation system?

If the system in SL is so good why did they scrap it? They only re-introduced it last year and what they have now isn’t straight pro/rel it’s an 8 team playoff for the last 4 spots in SL. They introduced that because there is such a wide gap in quality between their top and bottom teams that the back half of the season is meaningless for most clubs.

I have followed SL closely for the last 7 years and I would never base any management decisions on what they have done. They have 4-5 strong clubs and the rest are village pub teams playing on NSW Cup budgets based in old cow paddocks masquerading as “Stadia.”

The standard isn’t getting better. This myth is recited over and over but that doesn’t make it true. When your 3-year-old brings home his artwork from daycare and you tell him how wonderful it is, does that make it true?

Don’t be fooled by James Graham, the Burgesses (well 3 of them, anyway) and Josh Hodgson. These guys were already head and shoulders above the rest in England. Most of the UK imports in Australia are in the NSW and Q Cups or lower, not the NRL.

Because the salary cap is so high and all the best players are already locked up, it’s ridiculous to think a team from Wenty or Sunshine Coast could start building in October for an NRL season 6 months later. The only NRL players on the market would be the ones who’d just been relegated.

Should the NRL adopt a relegation system?

Under your system, last year we could have ended up with Newcastle NRL side playing Newcastle NSW Cup side in the relegation decider.

If we ever had one up-one down it would have to be State-based: If a Qld team was dropped, they’d be replaced by the Q Cup winners, etc, etc. Otherwise what would you do if the Qld teams were all knocked out in successive years and the State Cup winners for those years were all NSW (or NZ) teams?

Should the NRL adopt a relegation system?

No, 40% of NRL players are from OS or have some Polynesian or Melanesian ethnic heritage. The true number of players in Round 3 who were born outside OZ or NZ is about 16, or 4%

The tale of Semi Radradra: Ridiculously ineligible for State of Origin

Under current RLIF rules a player can change eligibility after each World Cup.

The tale of Semi Radradra: Ridiculously ineligible for State of Origin

You have to consider that “getting someone else” wasn’t that simple for the Sharks. With their coach turnover and ASADA saga, it wasn’t an attractive destination for an A-list player.

Cheaper by the Gallen: Why Cronulla might have paid too much

Really? “Interesting” in what sense? To me, Wakey represent everything that’s wrong with Brit RL. Village pub teams playing in disused agistment paddocks in front of 5K if they’re lucky, without any money for improvements and most years, unable to spend anywhere near the full cap.

It’s the triumph of tradition and mediocrity over progress and growth.

Super League Round 1 wrap

During the period covered by these rankings Wales have been beaten by England (twice), New Zealand, Australia, France (x3 times), Italy, USA, Cook Islands, Scotland and Ireland. How high do you think they should be ranked? Don’t blame it on the other countries’ access to heritage players either. In the 2013 WC there were only 9 Welsh-born players in their 24-man squad, so they also know how to use ring-ins.

Rugby league rankings: England close gap, Ireland pass Fiji

No they actually have a very dull logo with a ball sitting on a flag-like object the same colours as Norway’s flag. They have a team called the Bodo Barbarians with horned helmets and axes.

Surprisingly, these rankings and points totals make a lot more sense than the Union rankings. The All Blacks are #1 obviously but have only accrued double the points of Madagascar and Kazakhstan.

As the off-season stretches out interminably, one day I will use the points from the previous rankings and attempt to back-calculate what each game was worth.

Teams get points just for games played. This year, South Africa played more games than Niue, against more highly-ranked opponents.

PNG’s biggest problem is their location, which means they are more likely to be playing AUS or Fiji, etc. If they played against Ireland, Scotland, Italy, USA and Canada, all currently ranked higher than PNG, I think they would win most of those.

It does seem unfair that the PNGers field a fully home-grown squad but get beaten by a bunch of Kiwis and Aussies wearing Fiji and Samoa jumpers.

It isn’t stated in full anywhere but it includes factors like:

– the last 5 years, with more recent games weighted more heavily
– the quality of the opposition
– whether the game is part of a tournament or a one-off
– the margin of victory/defeat

Richardson used the word “discussion” which is why I’m so underwhelmed. These discussion points have gone back and forth on RL forums for a long time. I expected to see more numbers, even if they were only approximate.

The next step is for most of the clubs to tell us they are so broke they can’t afford anything and need an extra $5 miilion each just to pay this week’s wages.

The NRL blueprint is underwhelming

You can’t include the 20s cap because, in theory, these teams will be competing in the NSW 20s comp.
