The Widnes Vikings club has established a crowd fund to raise 5,000GBP for his family

Ex-Raiders player Kato Ottio dies suddenly

Well you’re a forum poster, what are you? I was a fan for decades before the internet but I confess to being a fan of the game rather than my club. Brit fans seem, from my observations, to be mainly attached to their club. I could accept Wests Tigers moving to Perth if that became necessary – why not, I already accepted the Magpies being effectively taken over by Balmain.

I’m “entrenched” in NRL because it is the highest-standard RL club comp in the World, not because my team plays in it.

Five reasons to tune into the Super League next season

Scotland got into this year’s 4N by winning the European Championship in 2014. This sad result was a farce. Scotland doesn’t even have the minimum domestic competition to qualify for full membership of the RLEF and RLIF and shouldn’t have been included. There hasn’t been a domestic comp of any description in Scotland for at least 3 years. RL has existed within 300 miles of Scotland for 120 years and they still don’t have any permanent RL club.

By reaching this tournament they have shut out countries with real, living domestic comps, like Lebanon, Serbia and France. In fairness, the French didn’t put mush effort into the qualifying tournament so they probably deserve what they got.

Samoa's first Pacific Test brings the drama

No they don’t. If you spend any time on Brit RL forums you’ll see endless posts about how dull the NRL is and how defence-oriented it is and how SL is so much better. One of the main differences over there is that all their SL is on pay TV but the NRL is on a different pay TV network so they would have to pay extra.

They haven’t been played in October since 1992 when the Brits still played in the northern winter.

NRL teams to snub World Club Challenge

Nothing personal Scott but your answer just sums up RL fans on the Webz – couldn’t find the 4 or 5 buttons needed to watch the game but had no trouble finding the 100 keystrokes to complain about it not being on.

Samoa's first Pacific Test brings the drama

I thought the commentators were very poor. Who talks during the haka? I can’t believe they were Samoan, given their pronunciation of the Fijian names was better than the Samoan names. They didn’t mention any interchanges and couldn’t tell the difference between Vunakece and Roqica – hint: Vunakece was one of only two players who didn’t have black hair.

They thought every Fijian within 20m of the sideline was Marcelo Montoya.

” why did Fox not televise the game live?”

They did. I know they did because I watched it live on Fox.

Presumably they will be selling naming rights just for the event so Melbourne and Perth are listed as “rectangular stadium.”

Rugby League World Cup draw announced, with NSW served a serious snubbing

There is no domestic comp in Scotland. Scotland is in the 2017 WC because they reached the final 8 of the last one.

Just when things couldn’t get any worse, you get an endorsement from Andrew Johns, whose last glowing personal endorsement was of Nathan Tinkler, as I recall.

AntsRANt you obviously don’t watch the NRL very often. Did you think all the Broncos were named William Hill? Or that Melbourne and South Sydney were both called the Crowns?

Origin is great - it's also a crass sell-out

Are you English, Hutch? I hear the same line over and over from Brit fans on RL forums. You know how long Origin will last? Until you can find/create another 3-game series that generates the same level of interest and income.

“Some of the best players don’t play Origin” Well duh! It is and has always been, a domestic competition. Most of the World’s best players don’t play in the Challenge Cup final either but they still have it every year because it is one of the highlights of the Brit domestic season.

“Australia is not even the number one ranked rugby league team.” So what? In the last 40 years NZ has only been #1 for about a year and ENG/GB has never been #1 but they still have their domestic comps.

You want to see the end of Origin? Replace it with a product that generates an even higher level of interest and income.

PNG beat Scotland 38-20 on 19 October 2013 in Featherstone.

Yes that is a big part of the problem. Also the fact that many contracts start on 1 November therefore the “contract season” is half gone, so to achieve a $570K cut you would need to release players with a face value of over $1million.

Move a player on $300K to the Titans but continue paying half and replacing him with a player on $90K minimum wage produces a saving of only $30K. If I’m a rival club boss I know that each week the Eels fail to reach the target, the discount increases. Wait 4 weeks and you’ll get David Gower or Vai Toutai for $30K net.

Why Tuesday was the greatest day in Parra's recent history

No they don’t have the right to sack another company’ employees. They can, however, set conduct rules as a condition of playing in the NRL. These could extend to behaviour of club officials.

Will the Eels take the NRL to court?

Balmain Tigers? The salary cap was introduced in 1990. How many GFs have the Balmain Tigers won since 1990?

Yes but they could have watched Semi play for Fiji the very next day which, presumably, would also generate a load of interest in Fiji.

If the goal is to maximise participation in the event then surely 3 games are better than one.

Do NZers feel the same way about ANZAC Day as many Australians do? I don’t know.

How rugby league failed the Anzac Test

I agree. However, once the RLIF stamps his change of country, it puts the ARL in a difficult position. To promote RL in Fiji, clearly we all want him playing but he has just made himself ineligible for Fiji until 2018. He can’t change back now. If AUS don’t pick him now, what about merit-based selection? Does it exist or not?

In the long run it probably won’t matter much, considering he could get $1mill/year in Japan RU.

They don’t have an ANZAC Test because they don’t have permission to use the word “ANZAC.” Simple. Let google be your friend.

How rugby league failed the Anzac Test

I’m not singling out RL for applying its existing rules. I’m singling out RL for failing to realise that Semi’s greatest value to RL is to help grow the game in Fiji. To that end, it would be much better for the growth of the game if he played for Fiji. In my original post I criticised the RLIF/ARLC/NRL for not trying harder to convince Semi that he could do more for RL by representing his country of birth.

OZ didn’t “get” Semi through a legal loophole. Semi walked through it on his own. The saddest part is that, once he turned his back on Fiji, the only way Fijians were going to see him in any Test arena before 2018 was if the Kangaroos picked him.

I’m disappointed that we picked Radradra. The eligibility rule surrounding residence should be primarily to allow weaker countries to use any expats available to improve their strength, not to allow richer countries to simply buy in ready-made athletes.

I understand the argument that, since Semi is eligible for OZ and has nominated OZ as his country of eligibility then selection should be based purely on merit. I guess, if anything, I’m annoyed at the RLIF for allowing a player with such promotional value to Fiji to change his country of allegiance.

I’m also disappointed that the NRL, ARLC or RLIF didn’t offer Semi some kind of paid ambassadorship on condidtion that he continued to play for Fiji, thus removing any financial motive to join the Kangaroos.
