Sorry Basil Its you thats missed the Point.
I find it remarkable that so many in this thread have only just worked out this is a business venture with a long term (10yr+) goal of building support and more importantly sponsors. David Koch and Keith Thomas put it together due to a limit in available sponsors in Adelaide. Its added a significant number of non traditional sponsors to PAFC – Chinese and Aust, which enables them to pay for an opposition teams home game, pay for the game to be run by the AFL, oval, facilities, umpires etc. They’ve got the Fed, SA and Vic state govts involved by running business conferences on the side etc. The AFL have setup a permanent Shanghai office. PAFC runs Aussie Rules football clinics through at last count 100+ primary schools in Shanghai from there own permanent staff. Its established the Shanghai AFL with 8 clubs. All without any money leaving their own bottom line. Crowd figures are irrelevant, although something like 2000+ PAFC supporters travelled for last weeks game and most of the others were corporates – local and Aust. It was shown on internal Chinese TV with an estimated audience of 5 to 8 million ppl. Its in Shanghai because its in the same timezone as Aust so satisfies the AFL broadcasters. China is our biggest trade partner and the guy who runs Shanghai Cred (the biggest sponsor) is in love with AFL and Port Adelaide. Its about the money, it was always about the money. I say all Power to them!

Why the AFL's China venture misses the point

WCE expectations no greater or worse than most clubs, certainly no more than Ports expectations. Hardwick had been making finals true, but there were plenty baying for his head. All Im saying is it can turn quickly and I believe Hinkley can coach otherwise they’d have not made the prelim in 14 if that wasn’t the case.
However I am not saying Hinkley isn’t under the pump, he is, if they get away to a bad start – their 1st 10 games, the hardest according to Champion data – it will get ugly quickly. But Im very glass half full ATM. Given a reasonable run with injuries I think they have the talent and the coaching staff to go deep. They essentially get Hartlett n Broadbent back as new players, Burton, Lycett and Mayes add real class and depth, I think (hope) Rockcliff, Motlop n Watts will be better this year. Marshall after a bad personal year and with development in Howard, Bonner, Byrne-Jones will be better. Also don’t underestimate how Boak will go without the Captaincy – no-one better prepared than he and I reckon he’ll free up and play footy more like he was 5 years ago.
Only time will tell.

2019 AFL season preview: Port Adelaide Power

Great summation Cameron, though I think you’ve over rated the contributions of Polec and Wingard, (yes i know where they finished in the BnF) _ Wingard has been a whinging destabilising individual for a couple of years now, that hasn’t maintained his early years form and I think his move to Hawks will be good for him and Port. Polec was a good player, with the defensive skills of a butterfly, not worth $750k pa for 5yrs, good luck to him and North.
Coaching is an interesting art form and things can change quickly -1 yr ago the Eagles faithful were losing faith in Simpson, 2 yrs ago Buckley was a dud, 3 yrs ago Hardwick was a dud, 12 yrs ago Clarkson was a dud! Hinkley can coach – the sum of the panel though is the key. Additions of Schofield, Montgomery and even Brogan will make a big difference. I think they went far too defensive last few years, injury and personnel caused limitations, as at all clubs but Ryders problems impacted more than ppl give credence for especially late in the year, when if you watched him live he was like a 3 legged donkey at times and unable to jump.
I look forward to this year, Im a died in the wool Port supporter and member and clearly get optimistic at this time. But the noise coming from Alberton about speed of ball movement, the introduction of some of the kids, the addition of Lycett (a bigger impact will be hard to see in any other club than his on Ports this year, barring injury) has got me up n about. I predict they’ll be bottom 4 of the 8. Hopefully pushing top 4.

2019 AFL season preview: Port Adelaide Power

Batters weren’t the issue.

Inability to defend a 300 plus score at the MCG is a cardinal sin. First 10 overs from Oz were appalling, lack of consistent line and far too short. Pace is not the answer in limited overs cricket necessarily. Changeup balls and guile with clear plans for every oppo batsmen needed.

Q: Why isn’t Lyon in this side? Zampa bowled well but Lyon bowling with new ball in first 10 would handbrake mosts sides.

England hammer Australia in ODI opener, and this time it was the bowlers at fault

Mark not sure what you call major but of the 3 “minor” tv, CCTV is the single biggest TV broadcaster in China reaching 1.2 billion ppl across its 50 channels. Even if .001% of that market watch it will still be the biggest audience ever for an AFL match by about 9 million. As for the money Suns have been Paid $1/2million to give up the game they wouldn’t have done that if it didn’t make sense for them I see today that Tony Cochrane want Suns to become Ports full-time oppo in Shanghai so he’s seeing the benefit. As for AFLW as great as it is the simple fact is that Port would be gone if they remained only in the Australian market; the sponsorship pool in Adelaide is finite and predominately welded to the Crows. Roar and Against: It's a great idea to play an AFL match in China

Hinkley needs to stay another year at least. The cattle on the park aren’t as good as people reckon. The depth in the midfield is too shallow. If 1 or 2 are off by a little then the next level aren’t good enough to step up. I agree the skills are terrible, more time with the balls in hand and a less time in classrooms Id reckon.

If Port Adelaide is serious, Ken must be the first to go
