Not having Circati is a huge shame. Should have just picked him for the Asian Cup in Jan, it seems (although he probs would have been benched). Not sure why Peupion hasn’t be released, given he’s not playing for Brighton. Triantis also a big loss. Bos (injured) too…

Squad is probably as I would have picked – except Mauragis has been hard done by. Don’t know who he replaces though. Rawlins too.

Midfield seems a bit weak, I need to see more of Valadon/Youlley. Not sure who other options are, but are they really our next best u23 midfielders?

'Hate to be in his shoes': Olyroos coach explains why he's snubbed Irankunda for Paris qualifiers when 'I could be selfish'

I tend to agree – I’m sure SS will weigh in but I wouldn’t be surprised if between Nestor, AU, the national teams there is an agreement that club career needs to be settled first – he needs to be handled delicately I think. That being said I disagree, and I want to see him playing for our national teams. I think playing for Aus gives players a lot of pride and something to work towards.

agree with BT – he’s too old to make the move to a top 5 league now and he probs wouldn’t for family reasons anyway. But he is 100% good enough.

'I'm over it': Arnie's anger that sparked Socceroos WCQ rout, Goodwin 'stole the night' as Yengi off the mark

rankings are shocking indicators, but also super important. rather be ovverranked than underranked!

Tufano as much as I despise what MAC and WU stand for in terms of A league expansion – they were the wrong way to go – they are part of the fabric now, and there is at least some promise on both sides (MAC crowds have been improving – mainly because they’ve been performing; and WU finally, FINALLY moving to their home).

But I agree CBR and Wollongong should be shoe ins. Probably followed by a 2nd team in QLD if they can get their act together. I think they all can be relatively viable in current circumstances.

And not wrong re CBR summer – but the ALW seem to do it ok. It’s not ideal though, especially seeing as the hottest part of the day here is 4-6pm

Grinch!!!
He will get better. He’s clearly got the quality – can’t expect him to score or assist every game. He well and truly deserved it.

Never would have thought 6 months ago that JCP would be a starter in any team

Kuol scored 2 goals. End of story. Why does every coach need sacking according to you? There’d be no coaches left

Can’t stand Uruguay

I quite like this idea – might end up becoming a league all stars vs phoenix though!

yes but apart from that, the rest drop off Garry – central asia > most of east asia, and they’d probably land in the west confed

still think there is a potential argument to be made to combine oceania with east asia + split west/central Asia… We’d lose a bit of quality in our confed though.

thought he was excellent Grem – didn’t see enough of him when he was in the A league, but he looks an athlete for sure

So good to be there live last night – I was down right on the barrier. I really think CBR could sustain an A League team quite easily – given facilities and dearth of sport here especially in the summer. Yes Mexican wave came out early – but there wasn’t end to end action to speak of for large parts of the game & difficult to generate atmosphere in a stadium like that. But the crowd came out and that was a good sign. They’ll get behind some local boys (Rogic out of retirement anyone??)
Thought Aussies played OK – first half shaky. But – how good is Craig Goodwin? I was more impressed with his outside of the boot cross than with his volleyed goal (he was always going to score that). Best left foot in the NT and probs best ever after Kewell. Chronically underrated when he was younger – he’s so good now, shame he’s 33. Hrustic class too but Goodwin miles more important.
Other stand outs – so good to see a couple of different strikers score; and I thought Yazbek looked really sharp and quick. I think Iredale & Yengi could be consistent Socceroos for the next few years. Neither of the finishes were particularly difficult but Iredale in particular was busy when he came on (admittedly against a pretty rubbish Lebanon in the 2nd half). Metcalfe needs a spell on the bench. There’s clearly an end product there but it really isn’t happening for us.
Stoked I got to see Nizzy debut in person.
Also a shame to see the Olyroos bow out on pens in the WAFF u23 final this morning.

Tunisia not a bad side!

thought Yazbek was excellent – he’s quicker than I thought

Get off the Socceroos' backs! One training session, a win against Lebanon and still people fail to understand Asian football

Excellent comment. I dream about the day that every serious football fan (or every 2nd, or 3rd, there would still be heaps) followed an A league team as hard as they follow their premier league teams.

Imagine the atmosphere at stadiums. The players would play better. It would be easier to watch on TV. There is a complete lack of respect for the quality here.

Issues with the governance, APL, etc etc aside, if you ask a football fan who doesn’t watch A League why they don’t – it’s always a comment about it being an amateur level. Few of them care about how it’s governed or what the APL is doing. They think the quality is no good. It’s not the best league in the world but FFS, does it have to be to not be seen as a joke??

It’s an interesting point you make about SBS and I wonder if that has had an effect. I guess perhaps the lack of history or community connection with some of the A League clubs take away some of the passion, but it has to start somewhere.

Oooh, but also Milanovic, somewhere too. Replace Vellupillay with him.

I really enjoy having an Aus manager who is familiar with the environment here & always has the bigger picture in the back of his mind. I feel sometimes with these overseas coaches it is simply about getting to a tournament and they have no real care for the long term.

just voted – for me:
Paulsen
Payne Miranda Kaltak Farrell
Arslan Machach Nisbet
Taggart Stamatelopoulos Irankunda (not so sure about this but he would be unreal to watch, similar to Kuol)
rising stars: Waddingham Vellupilay Old Jovanovic
Davila probably has to get in somewhere though.
For the ladies:
Whyman
Maher Roestbakken Simon Checker
Milovojevic (has been unreal for cbr) Fraser Logarzo
Gielnik Vine Heyman
rising stars: Galic Trimis Harding Chinnama
Want to fit Melina Ayres in there (who should be a Matilda) but can’t. Holly McNamara also probs not back from injury by then ????

Expecting a few changes tonight:
Ryan
Miller/Jones Souttar Burgess Rowles
Irvine O’Neill Goodwin Metcalfe
Yengi Duke

Silvera, Yazbek, Nisbet, Hrustic, Iredale all to feature.

Again I’ll point out my frustrations with Arnie ignoring both Callum Elder & Jason Davidson – taking half a left back in comparison to the 3 right backs he picked. King should be nowhere near the national team but understand limited options at this late stage.

Keen to see a game live in Canberra! I’ve heard the pitch is bang average though.

unfortunately that will never change. Both sides have to play the political game. What would help is if some of the players (like Goodwin did in his presser) put a bit of pressure on governments as well as Arnie. Goody is keen to have a game in Adelaide. All it takes is a couple of mentions here and there and it’ll get in the media

Yes the Olyroos have been interesting to watch – I always enjoy watching the youth teams play. I wonder what our best Olyroos team looks like – hopefully we can see that at the Olympics (if we can make it there).
