Spot on, I was very happy the Windies won and wanted Pakistan to get a win too, they were so close. But not because I don’t support Australia, I want a challenge. Let the West Indies beat us and then we’ll beat them in the World Test Championship final, how good would that be? Unlikely but it’s what test cricket needs. I remember the anticipation for the 06/07 Ashes was off the charts because we’d finally lost the Ashes. We Aussies love to respect someone who can beat us, and then look forward to smashing them back.

It's not un-Australian to cheer against Australia - in fact, in our favourite sports, it is the best option

I will defend the author here, everyone (that term can be said when obviously it’s not meant to be literally 100%, but at least the overwhelming majority) was rightly aghast. There was outrage and ridiculous over the top comments in the immediate aftermath. I know personally some of my friends and saw Facebook posts of people saying that’s it they will never follow the Australian cricket team anymore, etc, etc. Everyone was worked up into a frenzy, even the PM weighed in. Only in time as emotions died down and we looked at it more critically did people realise maybe the punishments weren’t reasonable (or accurate). But everybody wanted a scapegoat and to quickly deal out the punishments and move on.

Grabbing a cold one: What I'd like to discuss with David Warner

Haha I was there yesterday, it was a great day of cricket. Disappointing with a close (ish) match more people didn’t come out. I think it shows many people go to the big sports events in Melbourne just to be seen and for the social aspect, it was just the true cricket nuffies left by Day 4.

'Cool': Captain Cummins dishes out perfect, one-word response to Pakistani's shock 'better team' claim

I can’t believe Warne, McGrath, Gillespie and Lee only played 16 tests together. That line up is burnt into my memory (along with Langer, Hayden, Ponting, M.Waugh, S.Waugh, Martyn, Gilchrist). I guess it shows how good the team was back then that I remember it so fondly.

Australia’s quartet of quality will soon be most prolific in Test history - but never the greatest

I fully agree that the Sheffield Shield and One-day Cup have so much untapped potential. But even so, the realistic ceiling still isn’t that high, maybe 2-3k crowds?? And that would be with some moderate advertising, more suitable boutique grounds with some family fun marquees, etc. That investment for such small crowds, although they few of us purists would love it, just isn’t really worth it sadly, so I think we are stuck with the status quo.

Absent Sheffield Shield Crowds: Quality players, quality cricket, potential future stars of the game...but where is everyone?

I’m pretty sure they got rid of that and left it up to the player, either they stop and say they don’t want advantage or if they play on that’s it, you don’t get to go back if you stuff it up (which happened sometimes in the past). Which is why this was called advantage, it’s pretty unrealistic to expect the umpire to be able to understand whether the player knew it was a free kick or not.

'Disgraceful', 'Lions robbed', 'umpires won Collingwood a premiership': AFL world erupts over last-gasp 'advantage' call

Hey Tim you got that mixed up, the last time a winning semi finalist had to make a 6 day turn around was Collingwood in 2018, they beat GWS in the semi final. And Eddie McGuire blew up about the AFL stuffing up the finals fixture, which they look set to do again.

Should the Blues be... favourites? Five burning questions ahead of AFL semi finals

Well said. Often we look at ourselves as to why we succeed at some sports and not others, but in reality most of the time it depends on what other countries are doing. It’s why typically our female athletes and national teams out perform their male counterparts. Women’s sport gets nowhere near the same attention in most of the world (although that is changing). And I’m not knocking our female athletes, it’s just reality.

Why Australia’s runners cannot emulate the global success of its swimmers

What the AFL reckon they’re going to get more than 50k for a St Kilda GWS elimination final?? Tell em they’re dreamin

Yes it’s definitely just a one off. C’mon it would be great! Australia winning a FIFA World Cup, at home! It doesn’t get bigger than that. It would benefit the promotion of soccer in the country as a whole.

I think a reason for 18 round home and away back then was also there was a lot of emphasis on the state of origin carnivals. And travel wasn’t that easy so it took a lot for everyone to go to say Adelaide for a week. Once they went to 22 rounds the players in state of origin had to miss their club games until the VFL could squeeze the start one week earlier into last week of March. It used to be so strict the councils regulated that football was only April – September, and cricket October – March. Nearly all the local footy grounds doubled up for the local cricket team in summer.

TOM MORRIS: Footy has never had less integrity - and the AFL wouldn't have it any other way

If we can’t have 17 rounds, then yes it’s the fairest option.

The AFL fixture changes that will make the game fairer

I think a big issue with this is also that the top 4 isn’t such a huge advantage anymore, if this system was adopted the pre finals bye would at least have to be removed. But even still, I don’t think the top 6 teams will be too keen on flogging themselves against other top teams for 5 straight weeks heading into finals. I don’t think those matches will have full intensity either, similar to the bottom 6.
Can’t we just do pots for the last 5 (or 6) weeks. Top 3 are pot 1, etc and you play one team from every other pot. Stops some teams getting an advantage by playing multiple bottom 3 sides twice.

The AFL fixture changes that will make the game fairer

Yep, it’s one of the ugly sides of Australian culture. Mason Cox has called it out too, if you’re different from us we don’t like you. If you’re too successful we also don’t like you.

The AFL must do more to protect Jack Ginnivan

I didn’t see it that way at all. It’s pretty normal, what about long service leave? I remember Buckley took an extended break at the end of a season and went to Italy with family, 2018 I think it was. If he leaves end of season I think it makes sense, mid-season would be a bit weird.

Life bans are too far, you don’t want to see Taylor Walker ever able to play AFL again? We need to educate people, not villainize them and make a fear society where people conform for fear of consequences instead of true attitude change. That’s only a surface level solution. Racism is embedded far deeper in our culture than we want to admit. It’s not just a few idiots, clearly, if you just look at the amount of incidents lately. We need to allow people to learn and change, life bans doesn’t do that.

Six Points: Don't write off Carlton just yet, 2023's dumbest act, and why Dee's ban is an utter disgrace

Fair point, to be honest I’ve barely watched AFLW. I did see Sam Lane there though and that reminded what on earth happened to here?? She used to be one of the best journos.

Six Points: 2023's biggest umpiring farce, Kelli Underwood's commentary, and was Gather Round really THAT good?

1. I agree Gather Round was way over hyped. The numbers were good but the atmosphere was down, it was obvious it was a bunch of neutrals without any real care for the game one way or another.
2. I’ve never liked Kelli Underwood’s commentary, and I like Daisy Pearce and… unfortunately there aren’t other women AFL commentators, but I also like Isa Guha and Mel Jones in cricket. So nothing to do with gender!

Six Points: 2023's biggest umpiring farce, Kelli Underwood's commentary, and was Gather Round really THAT good?

I don’t think they are mutually exclusive. More spectators in person add to the appeal of watching it on TV. We all now know how ugly watching sport without fans is, watching some of the test cricket in Pakistan has been painful due to the tiny crowds. It all feeds in together, even on TV how great is it to hear the roar of a crowd. And with the exception of Indian expats, I don’t think the streaming from outside the host country is a big factor.

Getting rid of five day Tests is an over simplified solution to Test cricket's problems

The 5 days is not the issue, it’s ludicrous that we still play tests in the mornings, on weekdays! You want to make test cricket more profitable, stop playing at 10am on a Thursday. We’ve got the pink ball, only tradition is holding us back from all tests becoming day/nighters, which they will eventually, except for England probably.

Getting rid of five day Tests is an over simplified solution to Test cricket's problems

I’m sure Hayden and James Brayshaw would get along nicely, he’ll be on channel 7 next season.

Hey, Hey it’s Hayden: Former opener’s boorish commentary style from a bygone era should stay there

As a Collingwood fan I feel quite familiar with taking on the Stars as my BBL team; “star” powered team, instead of tattoos lots of bling, lots of finals yet rarely (or never) any titles and maybe some big egos not willing to work hard enough.

Keen on Team Green: Why can't the Melbourne Stars get it together?

Yeah the ref in the final actually did a great job, penalty calls were all correct.
Agree the rushing in is not on, I don’t know why they just don’t start showing yellow cards to anyone who doesn’t leave when the ref tells them too.

Why Argentina were behind four of the best five matches of the World Cup

How we love to exaggerate and take a one-off best and expect it to be the norm. Do you know there’s only ever been two BBL crowds over 55,000? There’ll never be another 80k BBL crowd, doesn’t need to be.

This is the BBL's brightest start in years. Cricket Australia can't afford to let it go to waste

I wish it were so but there’s no way Africa and Asia are going to give up their extra spots now. They stand to gain the most, their spots are almost doubling. Huge difference to go back to 32 for them now.

Greedy, selfish FIFA to blame for 48-team World Cup mess
