Definitely agree. I’m disappointed we have to put up with Channel 7 commentary for finals. Fox Footy is better now. 7 losing Cometti and McAvaney has hurt them and they haven’t been able to replace them.

Ten years on: Why Ten's AFL commentary still reigns supreme

Probabaly not for reasons you mentioned. The Bundesliga is a bit of a feeding ground providing a lot of exciting talent for the rest of Europe’s top leagues. But apart from Bayern no German club can really hold on to that talent and build a real powerhouse team, due in part to not getting the mega investments of foreign owners.

Would the 50+1 rule work in the Premier League after the ESL fiasco?

Very good!! I agree and have had many similar thoughts. I find it staggering we can’t get at least 1-2k into a Shield game. Even that, at a boutique venue would add a really nice, charming atmosphere and I don’t think it would be hard to achieve. A lot of high quality, known players play Shield cricket, if the matches were consistently scheduled over the weekend with some minor marketing I think it’s achievable.

Five ideas to revive crowd numbers in the Marsh Cup and Sheffield Shield

Harsh but I don’t mind calling out the clubs that are financially struggling. They are the ones the AFL could try to force to relocate or say they have to pick up their game revenue wise to survive in Melbourne.

If we're moving a team to Tassie, St Kilda are the obvious candidate

I think the idea is great, the teams ranked around 5 – 10 really have a lot on the line in their ODI series now. For example recent West Indies v Sri Lanka and Bangladesh v West Indies series are actually very critical for those teams’ chances of qualifying for the WC directly. I think for the associate nations’ development this is better than only getting a chance to play the top teams once every 4 years, it should even be expanded to 14 or 15 teams.

ODI Super League: A master plan or just another boring qualification route?

I actually agree with the later, flags should only be counted from 1990 now with the switch to the AFL era, it’s the fairest option.

Harsh but I agree, time for Tasmania Kangaroos I say. Why do we have to be morally determined not to lose any clubs? There still has to be a point when a club is just not up to scratch anymore, and on-field, off field and supporter wise North aren’t anymore.

I’m disappointed a Roar Expert would use such a provocative headline and write an article with such a negative outlook. As a Collingwood fan I want to share a few things:
1. Eddie McGuire is not affiliated with the CFC now, it was time, he stepped down, it’s good that he left.
2. Collingwood chose to make the ‘Do Better’ report happen. The report itself says its commendable Collingwood is holding up a mirror to itself and wants to change.
3. I admire Buckley admitting he was dismissive of Lumumba in 2017, wrongs were made, horrible ones, but what can Collingwood do TODAY? They are making right decisions now and I sincerely hope good long-term changes will result.
4. Collingwood stuffed up their communication in the trade period and didn’t treat Treloar well. But no player is untouchable and part of the reason it was so difficult on Treloar, as he admitted on 360, was that he didn’t expect to be forced out. Players want freedom of movement with free agency, etc (Treloar chose Colingwood over Richmond when coming from GWS after all) it needs to go both ways. Clubs can move players on suddenly too.

How long will it be before Collingwood give us another reason to dislike them?

Do we not remember the sub rule we used to have and how much we didn’t like it? That was brought in primarily for injuries. I think the concussion sub is fair enough, that’s an issue that goes beyond footy but just a medical sub is going to get messy.

AFL approves medical substitute for 2021 season

I’ve thought the same thing Jeff. I much prefer Fox’s commentary, graphics and analysis. Would be a shame to lose Fox Cricket because the joint Fox/Seven deal ends. I know nobody wants all cricket behind a pay wall but the specialization that Pay TV offers brings benefits, like Fox Footy too. I think make Fox Cricket the main broadcaster and as per the anti-siphoning act ensure some cricket gets on free-to-air just duplicating the Fox coverage. It may not be ideal but it might even not be all tests, just Ashes and v India.

Cricket Australia’s win over Seven and what it means for the game

Great, channel 7 deserve this loss for their pathetic, childish behaviour. All they lost was one test against Afghanistan.

Cricket Australia’s win over Seven and what it means for the game

I think there’s been a lot of talk about this on The Roar and while I agree with you in principle everyone is forgetting Cricket Australia doesn’t make the schedule in a vacuum. We have 11 other test-playing nations and World Cups to worry about which means we can’t just take up October – February for our summer. For example in the next 3 years 3 World Cups will finish in November; 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups finish on the 14th and 13th respectively and the 2023 ODI World Cup on the 26th. Plus the IPL starts in April, which massively squeezes the time we have to play international cricket and means we can’t line it all up ideally with our domestic cricket.

How to fix our cricket schedule

Your point that it is not a development competition can also be used in the argument for Maxwell not playing. Why should Victoria disrupt their team plans for one match to bring Maxwell in? Victoria can choose to keep a consistent team together in the name of playing their best consistently available team and choosing not to “develop” a Test potential player. Victoria could say to Maxwell if you want to play some Shield cricket at least commit to a few games, not just one, even if that means missing some or all of IPL.

It's baffling that Victoria is non-committal on Glenn Maxwell

I certainly hope South Africa are not the next West Indies! It’s a bit early to call, hopefully it’s just a down patch as all teams have from time to time (Australia’s early 2010s was pretty ugly too). World cricket needs more powerful teams, Sri Lanka also on the slide, Pakistan hit and miss, thank goodness New Zealand are at least up there.

Is South Africa the new West Indies of cricket?

Nice summary, there are indeed quite a few surprises this season, most notably for me PSG not dominating! Such a shame a tight season finish like this won’t have fans, most likely. Do you think the Covid-19 affected season has influenced why we’re seeing different contenders?

Dare I say it: European football title races are, well, exciting

Test, or embarrassment? Maybe I’m too pessimistic but I think the tournament would have just showed how far off we are.

Socceroos forced to withdraw from Copa America due to scheduling clash

It’s not that hard to fix. The domestic season can run a little into April and start in September like it does already. Have two blocks of Sheffield Shield and one-day domestic cricket either side of the BBL. Go back to a full home-and-away 10 game per state one-day cup.

Finch wants domestic one-day cup review

New Zealand seem to be trying to put women’s cricket in the spotlight. The NZ v England women’s ODIs get the primetime spots this weekend on Friday and Sunday.

When does Aaron Finch’s form become a World Cup worry?

I don’t know all the ins and outs of how the finances are split, but what are you proposing? I don’t think it’s possible to split revenue evenly among all 12 ICC full members. It will always be slanted towards the more successful countries and those that bring in more revenue. At least the WTC is equal based on series. I think big series like the Ashes will always be 5 tests, can the West Indies handle series longer than 3 Tests, both financially and on-field performance wise? I wish a day will come where they will and we’ll even see the Aussies make a big 4 or so test series to the Caribbean. It is more the T20 leagues that is making it tough for the Windies right?

The Test series that flew under cricket fans’ radars

Yes I have thought the same thing! The World Test Championship is supposedly in the name of “context”. But this series technically still has no context, neither team can make the final. With two divisions and promotion/relegation there is much more context across all positions, not just at the top. Ideally when Afghanistan and Ireland have some more Test cricket under their belt a top 6/bottom 6 split would be ideal, you can still have some cross-overs to ensure the bottom division doesn’t get cut off.

The Test series that flew under cricket fans’ radars

Great read, very pleased to get a bit of a feel for the series from your summary as I unfortunately didn’t see any of it.

The Test series that flew under cricket fans’ radars

Maate the global cricketing calendar is a mess. Where to start? Test championship with 9 teams who only play 6 opponents, what about the other 3 test playing nations? A ridiculously complicated points system because The Ashes must be 5 Tests but we’ll only give two to teams like Bangladesh. ODI Super League with 13 teams but each only plays 8 opponents, yet there is still a bunch of cricket outside of these leagues because the “big three” want to play each other more.

I’ve scratched my head thinking for a long time what needs to change and it’s not easy finding a solution. T20 leagues almost year round don’t help the problem. I think at the core of the problem the ICC needs to run cricket more like FIFA does football. There need to be set windows for T20 leagues, Tests, etc and member countries have to follow. BUT if that happens the “big three” will probably leave and make their own alternative governing body and everything will be a mess.

Australia and South Africa should co-host their next Test series

I think it can still be done. The “New Year’s” Test doesn’t always start that early in the year anymore to ensure it is played over the weekend. For example 3 January 2023 is a Tuesday. The New Year’s Test could start on say Friday the 6th. That would be a week since the end of the Boxing Day Test, no different than teams in the Rugby Championship playing one Saturday in SA and then the following Saturday back home right?

As for the warm-up games that is the plus of a potential Southern Hemisphere 4 nations tournament, the conditions are relatively similar for all countries so hopefully it shouldn’t be a big issue. But doubtless it would be blamed as a reason if the visiting team loses. I suppose it would be interesting to hear from an international player’s perspective on the feasibility of it.

Australia and South Africa should co-host their next Test series

That is a decent alternative. But I think it makes Australia’s white ball summer too thin. We still need ODI and T20 games with so many World Cups around the corner. Also that would be going quite far from CA to basically give South Africa our home games. The following summer South Africa is again scheduled to play 3 ODIs in Australia after the three Test series. So basically my idea is in place of those ODIs play one more Test match.
It’s not explicitly listed by the ICC but based on this current WTC being 6 series, 3 at home and 3 away, I assume the next WTC for Australia based on the Future Tours Programme is:
home: England, West Indies and South Africa
away: Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India
So technically my proposal is losing “half” a home series for Australia.

Australia and South Africa should co-host their next Test series

It was an amazing match! I’ve been waiting for the changeover of the young generation finally toppling the big three and indeed it may have begun. It was amazing to watch and try to work out what slipped in Nadal’s game, I really don’t know. That’s what makes Tsitsipas’ comeback all the more impressive.
