Good call Adam, I think during the home-and-away season a draw can be a fair indication that on that day, neither team was significantly better than the other. For mine, golden point and the excellent theatre it brings, should only be brought to bear once we enter the knockout finals series, where a result is vital, and in the Grand Final, where there has to be a winner. But for regular matches, no need.

NRL must change its scoring system to resolve the golden point farce

I have been there for an NRL double-header and a couple of Big Bash matches, Micko.
By comparison, the prices are not nasty, the food and drinks are varied and freely available at numerous outlets, the seating is comfortable, the facilities are all-new of course, and the place is spacious and pleasant. Public transport is included in the ticket price, or you can stroll over the bridge from East Perth, and the event staff are well-trained and helpful. There is also an outstanding new pub next door called The Camfield which has multi configurations and can cope with massive crowds, over 100 taps if necessary. The stadium took a while, cost a packet and instigated much argument and whinging, but the finished article is bloody awesome.

Why I won't be going back to the Gabba

Good for you, Alan. I am similarly all done with the WACA. I attended the Saturday of the Aus/Sth Africa test in 2016, ok I expected the savage price of admission but it was a 38 degree day so when I found my spot in the sun in the Inverarity stand I grabbed a can of Solo and a bottle of water, cost $11. Before long I moved into the shade without involvement from the plentiful security. After an hour or so, a group of South African ladies sitting in front of me thought they’d been patient enough for long enough, and declared they were up for a beer. The first protagonist returned from the bar protesting vehemently they’d been charged nearly $40 for 4 plastic cups of 3% beer, won’t use her term for the proffered beverage. I sat it out with the irritation of being gouged at every turn interfering with my opportunity to sit, relax and enjoy the match. This was the day Starc and Hazlewood bowled fruitlessly all morning at Duminy and Elgar but Smith didn’t bring Lyon on until just before lunch as he said Lyon’s hands were too moist and they softened the ball. At lunch I resisted the $18 wrap and in walking to the toilet, spotted a sign across the road at Gloucester Park : Aircon, Big Screen, $6 pints. I immediately set sail, but was amazed in crossing the road to find I was just one of hundreds doing the same. Had a great afternoon in total comfort. When I subsequently received an email survey, there was little interest in my enjoyment of the experience or value for money, the survey was almost totally based on what effect the numerous sponsoring advertisers around the ground had made on me : who was the most significant advertiser, how many signs on the list had taken my attention and in what order of impact, how many advertisers could I name from the day etc. I’ve always loved the WACA, and used to go there in the 1980s and watch WA towel up visiting countries’ squads in their introductory match to an Australia tour. I was there for Curtly’s 7 for 1, and for Merv’s epic against the Windies, saw Gooch and Gatting’s last matches, and Boonie’s Shield farewell. But I was enraged that day, and left vowing never to give them another cent.

Why I won't be going back to the Gabba

Go, Henry ! There isn’t one thing you’ve said there I disagree with, notably re Fleming and Langer.

Why Starc should stick to white-ball cricket

I have always thought Root to be good value, his hard work and resilience have stood him in good stead for a number of years and he attended the Academy in Adelaide aged 19 to help develop the tenacity required at the top level. I have continued to be impressed with his calm under fire, until his woeful effort in the second Ashes test when he claimed a catch off Labuschagne that clearly bounced, gave the batsman an unnecessary sendoff and then proclaimed innocence and sincerity.
Well that did it for me, and I have wiped him totally, so to see him get drilled in the box and then a golden duck in the fourth test, compounded by the misery of seeing him glumly watch as England was rolled, gave me heart that there is still some form of karma around.
Cheers, Joe…. 👍

It's difficult being Joe Root

Rob Quiney pretty much effectively destroyed that yardstick as a requisite for test selection.

Warner has lost the plot – and his off stump

The silence about Holder’s skill set is possibly as a result of his classy and understated demeanour. He is always great to watch when in action with bat or ball, and I find it compulsive viewing to watch a man so tall, yet so athletic. I had grave fears when he was appointed captain at a relatively young age, yet he has grown into the job and steers the team well. Hope he can continue to dazzle us for many years to come.

Is Jason Holder the most underrated player in world cricket?

Pretty sure Greg Chappell is gone after this tour, but why Hohns continues to be appointed is perplexing, he was mediocre first time round. The selectors have regularly appeared to encourage form, then ignored it and made selections based on favouritism and hunches, so if one of their left-field picks comes off they are made to look like visionaries. No point repeating my views on Langer or the eternal farce of Hick maintaining his position…

Warner has lost the plot – and his off stump

Speaking of which, why is it acceptable to have Joel Wilson continually appointed to umpire in one of cricket’s highest-profile series ? Players are rapidly dropped for poor performance, surely both sides can’t be happy to accept him rolling up and impacting negatively upon game after crucial game just because he’s already been appointed ? I bet if India was involved and were subjected to his stupefying ineptness he’d have been long gone…

Khawaja and Harris post 50s in Ashes shoot-out

Can somebody please explain to me the signing, and subsequent retention of Graeme Hick as a batting coach, given the deplorable and oft-repeated failure of Australia against swing and seam over the last three years ?

Langer tells struggling batsmen to channel the spirit of Stokes

He gives off very poor body language, and as you say his get-out wafts wide outside off are lazy batting. If two fieldsmen are running for a speeding ball, he pulls out first. He fields flat-footed, with his weight on his heels, rather than sprung, ready to react. He just seems as though he’s not hungry enough for the position. And when the going gets tough, he’s always one of the cheapest wickets to go. I’ve seen enough…
Marnus, on the other hand, was something of a left-field selection in Dubai, yet from his first appearance has played with spirit and intent, and is always keen to get right amongst it. Possible future captaincy material.

Marnus Labuschagne could be the player Australia have waited for

About the catching : Khawaja is cannon fodder while batting to the one going across him, and he is frequently caught napping fielding in close : in both circumstances, but more so in his fielding, he is perpetually standing flat-footed. When a quick reflex catch comes, he is always starting from scratch.

Warner and Khawaja face make or break Ashes Test

Played for Australia, yet freely admitted he didn’t know the laws of the game. Sigh…

The media are to blame for the Wallabies' failure

Nothing wrong with that.

It’s time to move away from Thursday night NRL

Not quite enough, as usual…

‘Third phase’ Benji should give retirement the flick

Agree with 1: Finals and Origin matches. For regular-season matches, a draw and equal points can be a fair and accurate result from a closely-fought game, but for knockout finals and big-ticket Origin matches, the drama and theatre of golden point is unbeatable.

Should we axe golden point?

Nothing wrong with that. They were questions that should have been asked, and if Brandy was uncomfortable with the topic then he made that clear, and declined to comment. Both men are at work and being paid, so there’s no problem with a bit of CSI work on the Blues’ loss.

WATCH: Brandy and Paul Kent engage in awkwardly tense TV exchange

He also said only recently that Mitch Marsh has that oft-inferred X Factor and would be a worthy inclusion. Based on what, I have no idea…

Is Stoinis still in Australia’s best one day XI?

Good point. You are probably the person who has moved on the least. In another week, the players will have done their time, and we can all move on. Don’t forget, the sandpapered ball in question was affected so little that the umpires didn’t change it, so those blokes have been pinged for deception, lying and stupidity. In most cases ball tampering attracts a game’s suspension or a fine of percentage of the player’s match fee, so they have paid a big price, but in their absence the squad has got on with the rebuild, now we all have to move on. Dredging all this stuff from a year ago up for the umpteenth time doesn’t help with the process. Surely, enough.

Won't somebody please think of the children?

Friday night, NSW/Vic/Tas 10pm, Qld 9pm, SA 9:30pm, WA 7pm.

Five games an eternity in fickle selection surrounds

Hopefully at some stage someone will point out to Hayden that Australia has an L in it.

Australia stun India with 3-2 series win

Seem to recall he had pretty good results as coach of the Qld state side a few years back ?

Darren Lehmann lands first coaching job since standing down as Australian boss

No argument there, and I’m in Perth. Astounding. Anybody else get the irony of Renshaw being overlooked repeatedly at the start of the season after a blow to the head by Langer, who’s had at least two too many but kept playing ?

Handscomb should keep in the World Cup

I’m a bit gun-shy with Turner, he is inclined towards inexplicable rash shots at times and showed it again the other night when still on 0. Also has a shoulder injury and only bowled one over in BBL08. As they say in the racing pages, Prefer Others…

Handscomb should keep in the World Cup

Great article ! I remember and concur with so many of those examples. I have always had the impression he wished to be remembered for the odd star selection from nowhere who has blossomed into a star from nowhere. I have form years been amazed at the irony of someone who was so imperious on the field being so ineffective off it. But in spite of it all, I just can’t dislike the bloke. He marches to his own tune regardless of the flak, always has, and I admire that.

Greg Chappell: Great player, terrible selector
