Indeed. Warnie was rattling the other night about the BBL final being moved around each season, but who in Melbourne would go to Marvel Stadium to watch a Perth Scorchers v Brisbane Heat final ? CA proved this years ago when a Shield final was dispatched to Canberra for no good reason and it was played in silence.

The BBL final Cricket Australia has secretly always wanted

“…played within themselves…” ” …a patent lack of dynamism…” I like your stuff Ronan, and usually agree but in this case I think Australia have frequently been reliant on the lower order purely because the batsmen lack patience and display poor shot selection, attempting to dominate by trying to hit the cover off the ball instead of playing themselves in while assessing the pitch/swing/bounce/breeze/bowler/field settings. Surely after all the frothing about the continual selection of Mitch Marsh merely to justify the obsession for an all-rounder, it is evident that if the batsmen play to their requirements, the all-rounder is superfluous.

Australia need a bowling all-rounder in ODIs

Yeah Nah. Foow credit to the boys…..bang on Matt, they’re more than happy to take the ridiculous money on offer, but they can’t be inconvenienced by all that annoying stuff required of being a pro athlete. Rapidly wearing thin…

A Valentine’s Day ode to Rugby League: I love you but you are a dumb ----

And yet Bott, amongst the carnage and impatient, woeful batting of recent times, Hick has managed to remain unaffected as the alleged batting coach. Probably should have been one of the first brought to task. Maybe Langer remembers the last time Australia had such a long slump, HE was the batting coach…

Bombshell dropped as Australian bowling coach quits

Khawaja’s footwork appears to have regressed somewhat, he is frequently found anchored or with his weight on his heels. His get-out shot here had no sign of footwork at all.

Burns and Head cement Ashes spots

Same for me, Christo. I really like BBL, living in Perth the time slot is a great way to spend a few cricket-based hours after work and before dinner over a couple of coldies on a warm arvo. The issues facing the game Brett has covered nicely above, but until the parties figure out how to separate greed from growth it will continue to wither : the general chit-chat is disappointment-based and the crowds have really dropped away. I’ve been to a couple of matches each season but as you’ve outlined, the promoter’s obsession with blasting noise at you for all of every available second is now way past annoying. After getting hammered relentlessly from the speakers at the Scorchers/Hurricanes match, to my astonishment the DJ (an entirely separate subject !) ran a “noise-off”, separating the stadium into east/west and seeing which half could create the loudest din, judged by a fake sound meter on the scoreboard.
ENOUGH !!
Just wanna watch the cricket….
And at the semi-final in Perth last season, the Scorchers batted second like millionaires and got pumped by 70 runs by the Hurricanes, yet with 15 minutes to go and the game already long lost, there’s some dill on the boundary line with a mike, “C’mon people, let’s make some NOOOIIISE !”
Shut Up, mate….

Discussion about improving BBL shows people care

Agree with that one, for sure. There was a period in time when Imran Khan, Kapil Dev, Richard Hadlee, Ian Botham and maybe Simon O’Donnell all occupied the role, but in UK conditions if you select a conventional squad of four bowlers, six batsmen and a capable keeper and they perform their duties, there IS NO NEED to select an all-rounder, just because you can. Can you hear me, Trevor ? Hullo ?

Australia don't need an Ashes all-rounder

And train smarter, Rob…

Renshaw joins Maxwell and Wade in the selectors wake

Thank you, Mr Knight ! I can’t convey how long I’ve waited for that deluded man to fess up that you don’t really need an all-rounder in the side, just because you can. And in spite of dropping Marsh, M, they sort of implied that Labu would have bowling requirements as well as batting at #3. Why not crank up the pressure on the poor bloke by making him captain as well ? Honestly, you could forgive some of their drunken weaving selection policies if the resulting justifications had any degree of logic. But so far, nothing….

Stoinis does not deserve a Test debut

Mitch Marsh has been retained with the squad instead of being released for Scorchers v Hurricanes. No complaints here ! In last season’s semi-final at Perth Stadium v Hurricanes his figures were 4 overs 0/53, and 3 runs with the bat, a nett deficit of 50 runs in a 70-run loss.

Australia's batting future on show in Hobart today

Good Question . Who selects the selectors, would be another one…
It’s not even worth listening to the delusional claptrap Langer and Hohns dish out as supposed justification for their ongoing bizarre stabs in the dark. No wonder so many players are muttering about mixed messages.

The Peter puzzle: Why is Peter Siddle being picked for Australia?

Yes ! Good call, David. Mystifying why on earth at the double-headers there is such a lengthy delay between the WBBL matches and the headline BBL game : not just at the ground, but on the tv broadcast as well. It is probably the only chance left for WBBL to get ahead and firmly establish its own niche, as now that the novelty factor has worn off a little, the resulting matches are being shopped around to smaller venues to try and keep their impact a novelty to different audiences.
Really as an ongoing proposition, following an initial novelty period it appears the women’s comp will struggle, as like AFLW for all their good intentions, the impact has not been well received on an ongoing basis by the general public. That’s not me being misogynistic, merely an observation based on the “crowds” on the sideline at the WBBL matches. I think the marketers were hoping mothers would take their kids along en masse in a groundswell of support, but it appears this has largely not happened.
I don’t know what will be the best way of the comp surviving, but I would have thought moving the boundary rope out and a good between-matches pitch prep could have been pulled off in less than two hours, and if punters see value in it and turn up early to watch the WBBL, it’s win-win !

Scheduling change for 2019 puts WBBL it at risk

Lynton, FTA sports broadcasting has always been reluctantly doled out and ja,packed with irritating ads at every opportunity. Others have mentioned the delayed broadcasts, for example in Perth the Friday night AFL broadcast was delayed by two hours “so families could get home from work, have dinner and settle down to watch the footy”. Thankfully that is no longer the case, but it need never have been except the network needed maximum time to bombard viewers with ads, so much so that the latter stages of the match would grow longer and longer as extra ads were dropped into the post-goal breaks, with the games finishing around 11:30 – 11:45pm. I’m not kidding !
You also have to factor in the massive payments made by pay broadcasters for the rights. How would all the ridiculously-overpaid athletes be paid so handsomely without the billion-dollar tv rights package ? Can’t see any of them requesting a salary cut so folk can watch them play the same matches on FTA.
As has been pointed out elsewhere, you can get Kayo from $25 a month, my current Foxtel deal is $40 a month with no dish, no box and no contract, for live, ad-free coverage with quality journalism, and decent intros and analysis. I have waited all of my life for international sport to be so accessible, so forking out $1.30 a day seems a small price to pay for the privilege.
No matter what happens, FTA broadcasters ALWAYS treat their sports viewers with contempt, and don’t deserve their patronage.

Sports broadcasting in Australia reaches crisis point

OK, that’s it, I’m done ! I know Geoff Marsh was a good bloke, and an OK batsman, but how the hell long does the love from the last century extend ? Tell you what, I’ve watched Aust cricket since 1985, but I’m done until they stop selecting the Marsh sisters on favouritism. Swampy was a great guy and all, but jeez he wasn’t a great/mythical/legend, check the stats ! MOVE ON !! I won’t be going to another game/watching/listening until that pair of dropkicks are dropped.

Another day, another failure for Mitchell Marsh
