I think you might be the one overrating the Dogs and underrating the Lions.

Also, I thought the commentary was highly biased toward the Dogs to the point of being very annoying and I would have liked the Lions to get ahead just to hear their backtracking.

Beveridge out-coached Fagan. Or, was it just that after two losses, the Dogs were fired up (their season on the line). I thought the Lions would be top 4 and pushing for a flag this year but after that terrible game doubt they can win the flag with Fagan.

Footy Fix: Jamarra's Dogs played with nothing but heart - shame the Lions left theirs at the Gabba

Concussion’s effects are cumulative – every jarring of the head counts. This makes it incredibly hard given the impacts of AFL. There’s no room IMO for dangerous actions and if Pickett had six weeks to think about it, then every other player would be thinking as well. If Buddy had four weeks, then you might just see this sort of act stop. Not something I’d like as a Swans fan but necessary for the long term health of the players.

Players have started turning their bodies, they can learn to not bump and sling tackle.

Six Points: Kozzie's bump deserved a month off, draws are awesome, and the Pies are officially likeable

Overall I think ladder predictions are impossible even though I’ve done my own. The 11th prediction was Tim’s and he owned it in the article. I scanned through the AFL’s expert’s ladder predictions and most of them were very minor shuffling of last year’s. Tim on the other hand noted that there’s usually two to three changes to the top eight each year and ran with that. I support that approach more than the pretend it doesn’t happen one.

A lot of people have noted the Pies incredible run with winning close games last year and their low percentage at the end of the home and away season. Reading Tim’s prediction of 11th, I thought no way because of their performance in the finals. I suspect they would have fared better than the Swans in the Grand Final but would have had the exhaustion factor from the Prelim that I believe caused the deer in the headlights effect for the Swans.

Footy Fix: 10 possessions, three goals and a game-changing five minutes - how 'Bobby Dazzler' sparked a famous Magpie win

Bulldogs problem last year was in defence. They brought in Jones. Not enough. They added a tall forward. Not needed. Other problem is the coach – I think he’s lost the team. He’s erratic with too many changes week to week. Teams need to learn to play with each other. I think they are the most likely team to drop out of the eight.

Who drops out of the AFL top 8 in 2023 and why?

Add to that the comments by Adam Cerra describing bullying, derogatory put downs in meetings, and unpredictable anger outbursts creating a walking on eggshells environment. That approach might have been Ok in the 70s but he is not going to bring out the best in a generation that will not respond to that treatment.

Lyon close to sealing deal for history-making return as Saints coach

My understanding is that Dunkley had a deal with the Swans – let him go to a Victorian team or match if a non-Victorian side picked him.

Why Brisbane is one of the biggest losers of the 2022 Trade Period

Thank you for all your writing this year.

2030 – make it 2025. Collingwood and now Hawthorn have at least looked. Maybe every club needs some external indigenous people to interview all their indigenous players from the last 20 years. Publish it.

Six Points: Reid wasn't to blame for Swans' grand final humiliation, and final scandal seals Gill's unflattering legacy

Talk about hard to tip. If the Swans play like they did against Melbourne, very high pressure for four quarters, then I think they win. I think pressure will decide it.

A grand final that's on for young (Sydney) and old (Geelong)

Whingeing about people whingeing – now that’s funny.

'All-time AFL controversy': Footy world divided over Cripps' Brownlow win as fans claim 'asterisk medal'

I was gobsmacked when that appeal was successful. If he had not played, then other players get the message that late hits are not Ok. I find the inconsistencies concerning. Josh Kennedy makes late contact to Docherty in round 10. Docherty leaves the field due to the blood rule but comes back and plays out the game. Kennedy suspended for one week. That’s a good decision giving a clear message. Letting Cripps play after he knocks someone out was not and the consequence should have been that he was ineligible for the Brownlow.

Collingwood 20 frees to Swans 15. Will Geelong get the 2016 umpires?

AFL Finals Focus: They made it by the skin of their teeth - but here's why the Swans can still conquer the Cats in the big dance

“It‘s 78 metres from the centre to the goal line at the Gabba. Everything is compared to the MCG; what do you reckon the MCG is? It’s 80.

“We‘re talking a two-metre difference at either end. So this obsession with the length of the SCG and the Gabba is totally off the planet.”

Healy said the interpretation that the SCG is shorter derives from when it used to be during his playing days.

“It (the SCG) used to be (tiny), when I used to play up there – the 50 metres was actually 45 metres, we just called it 50. Now the SCG is 77.75 metres from the centre circle to the goal line.

“So we‘re talking two and a bit metres; it’s irrelevant. Next time you hear someone talking about that, you know they haven’t done their research.”

So it’s Collingwood versus the SCG

There have been so many criticisms of the Lions and their losses in finals. They were the better side in the Semi last year and lost due to highly biased umpiring. If they had won that game and gone through to the Prelim and Grand Final, all of that criticism would not have occurred. Before last week, I thought they and the Dockers were a better side than Collingwood but this wasn’t the upset I expected.

AFL Finals Focus: Here's how the Lions inflicted an upset for the ages... and why an eye gouge could cost them everything

May last week compared to May this week is very interesting. What did the Lions do that Buddy didn’t? More mobility and stopping him from getting to the front. Some coaches need to look at that.

The comments about their dropping off in fourth quarters speaks to a lack of fitness.

I don’t think the pain on Franklin’s face was faked. It was a solid elbow to the kidneys (and against the rules). If it had been me, I would have been down for quite a while.

AFL Finals Focus: The Swans needed to find a way past mighty May. Buddy the decoy was how they did it

That’s certainly something they could change.

AFL Friday Footy Fix: Melbourne prove it's still their flag to lose as Zorko's 'faux tough' Lions get humiliated

It was hard to watch them making the same mistake over and over. I took the dog for a walk, came back and they were still doing it.

There’s some good examples of new coaching staff changing the game plan.

Semi Final last year – they lost due to grossly biased umpiring.

AFL Friday Footy Fix: Melbourne prove it's still their flag to lose as Zorko's 'faux tough' Lions get humiliated

It’s part of their job to try and keep people watching. I laugh when the game is well and truly lost yet they keep talking it up. Mind you there has been some remarkable come from behind wins this year.

Six Points: Get set for the best final round EVER, and 2022's worst dive named and shamed

Contrary to the TV commentary, he dropped his body and raised his elbow to draw a free kick. I think the booing was for the umpires paying him a free when they have been told not to encourage that behaviour.

Six Points: Get set for the best final round EVER, and 2022's worst dive named and shamed

During the most important part of that game the Dogs got 15 frees to the Swans 1. That’s not random or incompetent. It’s deliberate.

Patrick Cripps' suspension overturn is a disgrace. The AFL must act to ensure it can't happen again

Their bottom six is the problem. Their top six is what everyone raves about but the bottom six which will probably see them out week one. Still they won a Grand Final in 2016 and a Semi Final last year with favorable umpiring …??

Can the Dogs repeat their 2016 heroics this year?

I just did some googling that suggests Paul Roos was paid $1.5m to coach Melbourne 2014 to 2016. That conflicts with my memory of it being $1m? $1.6m for Clarkson in 2023 is not that ridiculous if the $1.5m for Roos is true. If I was Clarkson, I’d be asking for a five year contract.
