A warrior on the field, a gentleman outside footy: Trent Cotchin's perfect contradiction
Totally agree. I’ve written about this extensively https://www.theroar.com.au/2023/01/10/what-the-aflpa-should-learn-from-the-damar-hamlin-situation/ https://www.theroar.com.au/2022/09/11/what-the-aflpa-should-push-for-in-the-forthcoming-cba-negotiations/
I think that more wage transparency would help to show just how underpaid players are and it would also deepen the discussion around the game. It’s true we’re not economists but this is a salary capped sport which means in order to understand why teams do what they do, and evaluate the merits of those decisions, we need to understand the finances of the game more intimately
AFL player salaries should be made public
There is a big chance I am arguing with just the two people I caught up with on Sunday who were complaining about it. They might very well be the only two in the country 😂 😂
Postecoglou is going where no Australian has been before - let's celebrate him
Totally agree. I remember when the UFC was sold to Endeavour it became public that part of the reason for the acquisition was that the cost of the athletes was between 13% and 18% of a given event’s revenue. What a miserable orgabisation
Could Francis Ngannou be MMA's Michael Jordan?
Agree on Steele it was an oversight, as my Saints mates have told me! 😂 😂
Ross Lyon and Brad Scott are both singing from the same hymn book
There you go! I stand corrected. It does feel like they win most effectively attacking the corridor at breakneck speed and it shows in the quality of shots that they generate without a gun forward, but it’s interesting that they’re so effective around the boundary too. Definitely agree with the implication you drew
Are the 2023 Tigers anywhere near being a serious contender?
hahahah I can’t believe you were the first to comment on it! I also can’t believe nobody has commented on a certain needle in the Adelaide section!
AFL would you rather: Non-Victorian (and Geelong) preseason edition
Already published and accessible on my Twitter. In the pipe here!
Would you rather? AFL preseason edition
It is coming! I initially had 5 but I cut 2 for space and both of the ones I cut were interstate clubs, which I only realised after perusing the comments
Would you rather? AFL preseason edition
Your suspicion is right. My initial headline was The Ballad of Alexander Volkanovski – https://guywholikessport.wixsite.com/guywholikessport/post/the-ballad-of-alexander-volkanovski
Alexander Volkanovski robbed but classy, bring on the re-match
You’re not wrong! Whenever there’s a prefix to the word champion like the WBO “Pacific” Champion or the WBC “International” Champion I just ignore it. Not worth even dignifying. Like calling Gervonta Davis a genuine 2 division champion – just a lie!
Boxing's series of unfortunate events: Part 1
Boxing is defined by its headline attractions and always has been, which is why I focussed on them. Spence Crawford is deadset one of the best fights since Chocolatito Estrada 2 on paper. It is gigantic. It has also been a disaster from the beginning and should have been made before Spence’s car accident. To say otherwise is absurd.
I watched Shakur’s fight. He missed weight, fought yet another dull fight, then said I’m dipping out of 130 pounds despite having signed a contract to make 130 pounds. He’s another in a long line of fighters who learned the wrong lessons from Mayweather. Before Money, there was Pretty Boy, and he was knocking people out for fun and fighting through broken hands every fight. That’s how you build a legend.
I also watched Parker v Joyce and it was a banger. I would love to see Fury fight Joyce but that hasn’t even been considered by his brains trust.
And the way that Fury has handled himself has been pathetic for a fighter of his stature. He has never displayed any interest in realistically fighting Usyk and unifying the heavyweight title. He’s going to roll through Chisora again and probably finish his career fighting Otto Wallin types. Usyk, on the other hand, is apparently going to be ringside for the Wilder fight this weekend with a view to booking that. Assuming that happens, at the absolute earliest we get Usyk and Fury mid next year, but more likely late. Beyond that, blaming inactivity for Fury’s decision to give 11 loss Chisora a shot is patently absurd. He’s only fought once a year every year since 2019 and in 2019 he killed Tom Schwarz is a disgusting mismatch then went life and death with Otto Wallin.
Yes the undisputed heavyweight crown is of interest to the casuals. It’s also of genuine historical significance. It would be dumb to write a column where I am disappointed in the state of boxing and not mention that the best chance we have had since the early 2000s to unify the belts, and unify them for the first time in the history of the 4 belt era, is in grave danger of going by the wayside.
Canelo would demolish Benavidiez. I do not understand why Benavidiez is being treated like prime Roy Jones Jr. It is a genuine mystery to me. He’s got sloppy feet but a lot of pop. He’s tailor made for Canelo. I’ve also only got so many words, which is why it’s split into two parts. I could write a PhD on the ways Canelo has disappointed me.
The 135 pound division, I agree, is stacked. Would be tremendous to see the top dogs fight each other at some point in this millennium. If you aren’t jaded by boxing you’re just not paying attention.
Boxing's series of unfortunate events: Part 1
Chad Warner was my number 21. I agree that it’s a strange quirk of the list, but the only Blue that was close to dropping off was Weitering. They have a rock star top end of the list and not much else. The LA Rams of the AFL.
The gimmick isn’t the most valuable player it’s the most valuable trade asset. The title was originally “AFL Trade Value Column: Trade Period Edition” not “Who is the Most Valuable player” or whatever they changed my title to. That’s why there’s so much focus on contracts, age, and positional value
Who is the AFL's most valuable player?
Never heard of him? I just think Collingwood are all tip and no iceberg. Low altitude fliers, if you will
Who is most likely to win the premiership from here?
I’m kind of saying the same thing about melbourne and freo I just cast Freo in a more positive light than I do Melbourne because I have them ranked lower and they didn’t win the premiership last year so I judge them less harshly. Amiss has kicked 4.1 for his career – his strike rate is pretty good even despite his one miss against the bulldogs and to be honest I just thought it was funny that his name was Amiss
Who is most likely to win the premiership from here?
what’s that thing they say about great minds?
Who is most likely to win the premiership from here?
very very true! tbh i wrote the article while watching Brisbane celebrate on the couch so I wasn’t yet ready to give them credit for playing some kind of game and showing some kind of determination
Why Richmond couldn't get its fairytale ending
Richmond. It’s kind of the whole gimmick.
'We're back': Why can't Richmond win the premiership?
Well no, I also have him averaging more goals than anyone against top 8 opposition hahah and you said in your comment “he hasn’t tested himself against Harris Andrews”. He has and he demolished Andrews in the second half
'We're back': Why can't Richmond win the premiership?
What about the 4 that he kicked in the second half against Brisbane to drag us home in round 20 with Andrews playing?
'We're back': Why can't Richmond win the premiership?
Tom Lynch has the highest average goals per game vs top 8 teams of any player this year https://twitter.com/sirswampthing/status/1564213540856397826. Rare to see from a flat track bully
'We're back': Why can't Richmond win the premiership?
I agree the more I think about it the more I realise that Usyk’s path to victory is very very narrow against Fury (assuming it happens). Fury probably just too big and able to lean on him.
I would love to see Wilder vs AJ as well and think it’s a pretty dangerous fight for AJ given his chin issues but I agree it would be smart for him to step away a bit. I don’t think he’s retired because he’s just inked that big new deal with DAZN but I hope we don’t see him until 2023 and I hope they put him in with like a Kownacki or a Helenius or someone like that like they’re doing with Wilder.
I do feel for the guy, always being held up as the golden boy doesn’t leave a lot of room for being a human being. Maybe that pressure is getting to him a bit
'Simply better': Title fight triumph was Usyk's coronation
Pretty atrocious card wasnt it. Not quite Adalaide Byrd for Canelo GGG but not that far off. Strange because he Moretti and Weisfeld are normally pretty much the pick of a bad bunch but that card was atrocious
'Too talented and fluid': What gives Ukraine's Usyk the edge over Anthony Joshua in heavyweight clash
