I'm just a guy who likes watching games and thinking about stuff.

Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed it!

Definitely agree with Mike that I would love to see Canelo throw a few more jabs but I reckon the lack of jabbing and his looking gassed after round 6 of the Bivol fights go hand in hand. At 175 he just seems to struggle to carry the weight and apply effective pressure consistently – he’s just a bit patchy stamina wise I think. Better suited to 168 but I liked watching him the most at 160 where he was still busy and ripping big combos
What makes Canelo so compelling?
I also agree that the judges were trying as hard as they could to rob Bivol and it was gross. Boxing is my favourite sport as a spectacle but I hate everything about it that isn’t the two guys in the ring playing high speed chess!
What makes Canelo so compelling?
He’s absolutely been well looked after by judges – the Adelaide Byrd decisions in the GGG and Mayweather fights are gross I agree with you. On the steroid issue I disagree slightly – he was probably on clen at the time and that’s how he stayed so lean and was able to claim that he couldn’t make 160 for years (which was joke then and is worse in retrospect) but now he’s one of very few guys in the VADA pool. VADA is the absolute best testing that we have now because they do isotope testing, which USADA can’t do. Tom Hauser wrote a great article on it called “Can Boxing trust USADA?” for SB Nation. Worth a read if you’re interested! The reason nobody is in that pool is because the fighters have to pay to be in it and they get tested year round. Canelo actually does pay and is tested year round. Honestly if he was on the juice I think he’d be on that Jerrell Miller juice where he could throw more punches – he’s just such a patch fighter at 175 and even 168. Thank you for reading by the way I’m glad you enjoyed it!
What makes Canelo so compelling?
I wrote this before the fight and mentioned right at the end that I viewed him as either the best or second best LHW in the world depending on how you view Beterbiev. After having seen Bivol now dismantle both Canelo and Joe Smith, I feel comfortable saying Bivol is the best LHW going around and FWIW I think probably beats Canelo at 168 if Canelo doesn’t get a little more active
What makes Canelo so compelling?
An interesting and well thought out take on the Noble situation – really like it! I also wonder if maybe a factor with North is the fact that they’re one of the poorer clubs and are always closer to the salary floor than the top of the cap both in terms of list and footy department spending. I wonder if that is a differentiator between them and some of the richer clubs that have gone through recent rebuilds that you mention like Hawthorn, Sydney or even West Coast now?
Nothing to do with the sprays though, just a thought about why their bottoming out is so dramatic
No room for David Noble’s spray in modern AFL
“Or is an Arnie the final solution?” hahaha – very good
On reflection I agree with you. The run up to Gibcus is way too long! Will shorten my leads hahah!
Is Josh Gibcus the AFL's John McClane?
thanks mate much appreciated – and that 2020 game was a clinic
My relationship with football hasn't been the same since the 2017 grand final
my next two article awaiting publication are asking whether Josh Gibcus is the afl’s John McClane and explaining the first third of the AFL season through quotes from the Nolan Batman Trilogy – hope that’s unique enough for you!

yeah this is a fair shout about the dees. a lot of dees people I know agree with you. It was just my personal stakes in the game that made 2017 special to me

That’s such an interesting point on your changed perspective – thank you for sharing that!

I think they do now but I was trying to capture how I was feeling when i heard Dusty was touring the GWS facilities at the time. I agree GWS are a side that’s probably too full of tough characters and might struggle just slightly on the class side of things at the minute but that’s really how I viewed them at the time

you’d have thought this would have been put to bed after the third of our three premierships where we won every final interstate
