Tasmania doesn't need a new stadium - shame on the AFL for forcing us into building one

McQPt is prime land & would be sold to developers for high end housing. Those who are homeless will not benefit

James – yes, Adelaide was a significant upgrade. But it was a new stadium for AFL & pwuld not have been upgraded without AFL commitment. Many of us preferred that Westlakes be upgraded – but the benefits to Adelaide city & SA economy from Adelaide Oval have been huge.

! agree that it is a disgrace that Tasmania has waited so long for an AFL team. Hopefully this will arrest the decline in participation of footy in Tassie. Unfortunately the AFL required a new stadium in Hobart – but it’s not just about capacity, but facilities which we now take for granted. Look at the stadium debate in Sydney. The suggestion that the Suns & Giants clubs were admitted to “weaken the NRL” is disingenuous. It is about the growth of our great game.

I dispute the comment that Bellerive is a perfect AFL-standard venue. It is nothing like the Gold Coast or Giants stadia. Why should footy fans in Hobart be denied the same facilities as other states enjoy? Adelaide & Perth have both had economic benefits from having a new AFL stadium within walking distance of their CBD.

Yes, we have a housing problem all over Australia. This needs a national approach. But in Hobart’s case it should not be housing or development – it should be both. I imagine the people protesting on the weekend are quite happy for museum, arts & theatre to have good facilities & be financial supported. Maybe they just don’t like football – like this article suggested! Having been to Macquarie Point, it is the ideal location for the development proposed, which includes housing. And the number of visitors for AFL games will boost the economy, just as MONA has.

Port are on their way, Maxy 🙂

Tigers prove Hardwick has the necessary support at Punt Road

I lived in the USA for 8 years & couldn’t agree more about the americanisation of the AFL.

Six Points: The move to save the Swans' season, the worst thing a fan can do, and why the Blues are closer than you think

After exceptional crowds this season in both AFL & NRL, this weekend’s crowds are back to normal: NRL average = 16,000; AFL average = 35,000.

Footy race: Well-run AFL is miles ahead of lumbering NRL - and here are six reasons why

Like many Aussies in their 20’s, 40 years ago I travelled overseas. In a German youth hostel I got into a conversation with a guy from Sydney, who was extolling the superiority of rugby league. I was from Adelaide & familiar with rugby union, so enquired about rugby league. It pointed out that crowds at SANFL games were as big as Sydney RL, even comparing Grand Finals. And, of course, far bigger at VFL games in Melbourne. His reply was that Aussie Rules had bigger grounds. When I pointed out how ridiculous that was, he responded by saying that Aussie Rules was a Melbourne game. Nothing further needed to be said. Obviously a guy from Sydney was not going to lose this argument, despite how ridiculous his superiority was!

Ray – I have been a C/wood member for almost 40 years, so not anti-Maggies.
I mentioned Goodes & Eddie because the change in booing started then. Even tonight on Footy Classified, Eddie criticised the latest booing, but still tried to excuse it.
As for politicians – it has become common for them to abuse the opposition (of either stripe) & thus to abuse those we disagree with has become acceptable in our society. It was not like this in footy or politics 50 years ago.

Is it possible to find a right or wrong answer in the Buddy booing debate?

Booing at the footy is far worse than I ever remember. Supporters would boo a player who left their team when he came up across them next team. But not those who followed other teams. A champion would only be booed if he did a dirty act. Why have both these examples started with Collingwood fans? Have they learnt nothing from the disgusting Goodes episode? Is it Eddie’s behaviour that still keeps popping up? Or does it reflect our society now, which seems to be more nasty., starting with our politicians.
Whatever the cause, we have to show that footy fans are better than this.

We need someone at the bottom. Methinks it’s going to be North Melbourne for awhile. At least it gives them an identity!

North by North West Coast: The pursuit of mistaken identity?

To say that the Gold Coast is not Aussie Rules heartland is only half correct. Southport Sharks was formed in 1961 & there was a Gold Coast Football League until the local clubs were swallowed up into the QAFL (or whatever it was called). 60 years of Aussie Rules successfully competing against rugby league.

AFL News: Tassie named as 19th team but Foreign Minister 'shocked' Devils can't be used, King to invigorate Saints

I do not think you can say that the Suns have “embarrassing crowd attendance. Maybe on some days, but overall their attendances are as good as their NRL rivals, & occasionally are better. But the real success is the increased local participation & awareness, along with publicity for the AFL. And for the local economy, visitors from interstate, like me, who wouldn’t usually visit the Gold Coast, even for a holiday.

The AFL must ensure Tasmania has their own identity

And because the NFL only has 32 teams, it is so expensive to go to games, let alone have a season ticket.

Welcome Tasmania, but the AFL should be a 16-team competition so three clubs must go

There is nothing wrong with having a bye every week. We already have the byes in June. Scrap those bye rounds – much better to have 9 games each week & just 1 team not playing than only 6 games for the 3 rounds in June.

As for moving St Kilda to Tasmania…..have you not been hearing what Tasmanian people are saying about having their own club? Anyway, St Kilda covers a large swathe of Melbourne’s southern suburbs, like the Bulldogs cover the western suburbs. The only club that doesn’t cover a significant part of Melbourne suburbs is North Melb & they have refused to relocate every time it has been suggested: Canberra, Western Sydney, Gold Coast, Hobart. Actually Darwin Kangaroos sounds good.

Having a Showdown in Gather Rounder takes away the point of that round – & would rob that weekend of 2 x 45,000 crowds in exchange for 1 x 50,000.
Caroline Wilson has pointed out the AFL’s neglect of development & promotion in Sydney. The Swans v GWS game should have been on Saty night. In. fact all the interstate rivalry games should be on Saty nights. The 8 interstate clubs rightly claim the AFL is still too Melbourne centric.

Is it fair to criticise the AFL scheduling so far this season?

Excellent comments about the Tassie team, Tim. Eddie McG should just shut up. All the time. I do think the AFL was right to insist on a new stadium in the city, rather than Bellerive. Tassie deserves to have a stadium with the same facilities as people in Adelaide, Perth & Melbourne.

As for comparing a new Tassie team with the Dolphins – the comparison really should be with Port Adelaide. Like the Dolphins, Port are an established local club with a home ground. But I had to laugh when you said that the Dolphins are packing out Kayo Stadium. It only holds 10,000 & their last game at Suncorp Stadium only attracted 20,000.

Six Points: Pies' crazy bravery trumps critically cautious Crows, and Simpson's pathetic Eagles can't go on like this

Of course there will be people who oppose the Hobart stadium. I saw a few protesters, but to describe them as “public opposition” is to ignore the fact that most Tasmanians want a Tassie AFL team. Of course the Greens are against it, but they do not represent the majority of Tasmanians. We can see how hypocritical they are to the housing crisis by their threat to block the federal government’s housing proposal. Just like they pretend to be concerned about refugees when they were responsible for derailing the last Labour government’s plan. I don’t see them saying money allocated for arts, music, etc should go towards new housing.

The suggestion that Bellerive Oval is suitable for a new Tassie AFL team is laughable. You can’t walk to it from the city & it’s facilities are not up to scratch. The AFL has every right to want an AFL stadium that is equivalent to what AFL fans want & expect these days. Why should Tassie not have the same as AFL fans have on the mainland? It’s population is bigger than Geelong & they are about to get a modern 40,000 stadium. Describing Tasmania’s population as “paltry” is just offensive.

Do Tasmanians really want a brand new stadium?

AFL member & also have extra membership of my club

Fan behaviour is ruining the AFL match-day experience

My experience is completely the opposite. Only once, standing at the Collingwood end on Anzac day, have I felt uncomfortable with the language & drinking near me. When I attend my team’s home games I have a seat with fellow members, 1/2 of whom are women who understand & enjoy the game. Occasionally the umpires are criticised, even booed, but mainly we have fun & enjoy ourselves.

Fan behaviour is ruining the AFL match-day experience

Clarko should have gone to Gold Coast

It's time to turn up the heat on Clarko

Bellerive is a stadium designed for cricket, not AFL, & is terrible for footy spectators. And for visitors it is difficult to get to. As Adelaide & Perth have shown, Hobart will benefit from a city stadium.
An AFL team is essential for Tasmania – the recent decline in participation for football will grow with an AFL team & Tassie will become a footy state again.
This should not be a “stadium v housing” either/or argument……that’s a political argument, as evident by those who oppose the stadium. Tassie needs both & footy fans are worthy of support like others in the community, not to forget the economic benefits.

Is a new stadium a necessity for Tasmania's AFL inclusion, or are there existing alternatives that would work?

I came, I saw, I will be back!

AFL locks in Adelaide Gather Round long term after 'unbelievable success'

I, too, get sick of the put down of the northern expansion clubs. Thanks to Gold Coast Suns, Qld now has more kids playing Aussie Rules than South Aust. Gather Round needs to stay in Adelaide to promote the game in SA.

Footy Fix: Don't let the comeback fool you, Freo have been worked out

Adelaide has Adelaide Oval, but no other decent stadium. Hence Norwood Oval & Mt Barker. Perth has a 2 with WACA & Sydney has 3. See were it goes next year.
