Steyn, Philander and Morkel is a pace attack to be feared and the batting lineup is still very strong minus Kallis, who I would have loved to see stick around for our tour.

It’s very evenly matched. The lack of a genuine Test spinner could help or hinder the Saffas. If they pick one who isnt up to standard, the Aussies will have easy runs, but if they go with four pronged pace, they take away Clarke, Haddin and Smith’s favourite way to score.

Australia face a sterner test against South Africa

I was enjoying that. Unlucky Dennis.

Hundreds, ducks, averages and #RootMaths

An Olympic gold medal is a very powerful lure. There will be some hard decisions for a few Wallabies.

Folau would be an Olympic Sevens star

Doherty hasn’t performed. Lyon is a good option as a replacement.

Nathan Lyon should be in Australian ODI side

Excellent buy for Penrith. Idris and Whare is a very potent centre combination.

Idris to fill Jennings' shoes at Penrith

I wanted Haddin gone when he was dropped the first time around, but now he’s back, I never want him to go. He’s a much more mature player and a key part of the side. The best thing Mickey Arthur did was bring him back and make him VC.

The rise and rise of the keeper-batsman

I’m just as excited about this series as I was about the Ashes. The Saffas are always good opponents, but Steyn and Philander will go down as two of this generations absolute best pace bowlers. Not to mention the likes of De Villiers and Amla.

Nathan Lyon is handy to have on board with South Africa not having any spinners of note.

Can the Australians challenge South Africa?

Economic viability is key. The competition will need to get out of the blocks quick and putting a team in because it has a desirable location but shaky financial backing is a surefire way to stumble.

The viability of teams participating in the NRC

I like T20, but give me two cracking cover drives over two half hit slogs that just make it over a roped in boundary for six.

Why are we still watching Test cricket?

I’d echo that Broad deserves a run. Took his wickets below 30 iirc in a side which was getting regularly belted.

Who's in your Ashes Composite XI?

Philander very unlucky to miss out.

My best Test XI of 2013

Disagree.

The fact Ryan Harris has played eight Tests in a row means he should keep playing in my books. He HASN’T broken down and it’s wrong to assume he will. The rotation debacle confirmed that allowing the bowlers to adapt to the format works better than stopping and starting them.

Doolan and Coulter-Nile must play at Sydney

Good on him. He’s been improving since day one, which is a lot more than can be said of a lot of Aussie cricketers over the past few years.

Lyon grabs 100 Test scalps - and quickly

Have got to admire his fight. Been unjustly dropped a couple of times, most shockingly after his career best performance in India, yet keeps his head up and makes an even better fist of it each time he is recalled.

Why Nathan Lyon is not Spin Jesus

In an era in which the term ‘all rounder’ gets bandied about much too often, Jacques was a genuine collosus with both bat and ball who deserved the title. Outstanding player.

Farewell “King” Kallis, an all-rounder supreme

Good piece Spiro. Those whose jobs require a lot of physical exertion didn’t have a four day rest after their first Monday morning, they just pushed on until their body adapted to the work and they could do it for 40 hours every week. It’s no surprise injuries spiked when we weren’t allowing our bowlers the opportunity to adapt to the stresses of FC cricket.

SPIRO: Goodbye rotation policy! No Aussie changes for MCG

‘Scared of losing’ describes it well, Smith especially. When the captain needed to stand up, he backed away from the exact call he has the (c) next to his name to make.

Shocking Graeme Smith captaincy costs South Africa a shot at win

Very excited for the SA tour. A real acid test for the current playing group.

Faf du Plessis saves South Africa again

I’ll believe it when I see it.

David Warner considers a trial in Major League Baseball

This is excellent stuff.

Warne, Warner, Warnest

Me too, the Poms just don’t have the exciting and innovative 360 degree strokeplay to challenge Bird like the superstars of the BBL do…

Bird eyes Test cricket recall

Clarke may potentially not last that long. The biggest question is who takes over as captain if he doesn’t?

Predicting the 2015 Ashes sides

Still, my thoughts remain the same. Until the knee is causing him so much grief he has to have a break, he should play, because post-surgery I doubt he’d break back into the team. I think he is an excellent bowler who is desperately unlucky to have not played more Tests, but with Johnson, Siddle, Pattinson, Cummins, Starc and Bird all competing for spots in the side, some pending fitness, will there by room for a 35 year old coming off a knee surgery? Not if we’re winning, that’s for sure.

Should Australia rest Ryan Harris?

It would be a damn shame if he goes. Such a great player to watch in an era of so many cookie cutter forwards.

Fifita considers code switch: report

We should always play our strongest XI. He may get injured, just as Michael Clarke might finally give his back too much at any time. If they are healthy, they should play, because tbh the next game they miss through injury could spell the end of their careers, especially Harris.

He’s on a roll at the moment and he hasn’t had any indication in the last three Tests the workload is getting to him.

Should Australia rest Ryan Harris?
