The issue I have with the Raiders is that it isn’t really the inexperienced players who are letting them down. Hudson Young has been awful, with a handful of exceptions, since Origin last year. Levi is bog ordinary at best, and yesterday was much worse than that. Seb Kris has been poor since he came back from suspension. Even the normally excellent Tapine seems to have caught the mediocrity bug yesterday. Performances like yesterday’s have happened regularly, at least a few times a season, for years, regardless of the players on the field. To me it says something about the culture of the club (being thereabouts in the finals mix is good enough) and no doubt coaching methods and preparation more than the number of inexperienced players.
As an aside, I think its time for the Raiders to get a new coach. Nothing particularly against Ricky Stuart, but I’m hard pressed to see how any coach sticking around for longer than 5 years or so is a good thing. They get stale, players get sick of hearing them. There may be exceptions to this, truly exceptional coaches like Bellamy, but they would be rare.

I’m thinking next door in Colombia might be better for an NRL team. The Medellin White Line Fever? More appealing to potential players than PNG would be.

Topine vs Bulldogs an important case for NRL and players - wrestling punishment shouldn't be tolerated in a 'workplace'

I don’t know about that. Paper cuts can damn hurt.

I think many of the Eels players took Arthur’s message about being a part time team as something to aspire to.

As a Raiders fan, I’ll be interested to see how Ethan Sanders goes on Friday night.

I’m certain the Storm had more to complain about with the refereeing than the Roosters. Klein was very poor tonight.

That’s the end of him. Who ever goes better at the Renegades? Or Stars?

Agreed. It has to be managed properly.

NRL can reduce concussion headache by expanding the number of interchange players - with a retro twist

I’ve long thought this. As many on the bench as you want, but can only use x number of interchanges/substitutions. This allows you to cover most if not all situations, whether injury related or tactical, without having some convoluted rules like the current 18th man.

It’s a very simple game.

'How do you know if he’s any good?': How data, concussion rule changes will reshape recruitment

About time for the kick blockers – only about 5 years (or more?) too late. Hopefully they enforce it for kicks in general play too, as most sides do it to give a little more time to their kicker. I would particularly like to see it enforced in the case of bombs.

The obstruction in general play ruling I suspect will quickly go in the too hard basket and never actually be enforced.

Clearly its been indexed/tagged incorrectly. No doubt it will get fixed.

I think calling this game “All Stars” is a bit of a stretch.

This strikes me more as a Collingwood club problem than a Ticketek one. If Collingwood were selling certain packages it was up to them to ensure that the means were in place to deliver them, for example, by having them defined specifically via contract.

I’d love to know by what criteria the Tigers measure the success of their chairman, board and chief executive. I can only imagine the club is some sort of commercial goldmine, given their anti-success on field. But somehow I doubt that is the case – and I can’t be bothered looking it up to confirm.

I reckon if that tackle happened the other side of halfway it would have been penalised. It’s not only the timing, but the location, that came into it.

NRL Prelim Finals midweek talking points: Why do clubs keep thinking so small with stadium stupidity?

Yes, I doubt that is an improvement.

Refs not the riff-raff some critics claim - human error means there'll always be dud calls but standards have never been higher

I think with grubby offences like biting (and eye gouging) if you’re guilty you should be out for 10 games or more. I think the shorter sentences we see are a cop out, along the lines of it looks bad but we’re not 100% sure it was intentional. My view is its either guilty and 10 weeks + or not guilty.

There is of course a simple solution to get rid of there offences. Just ban, and penalise the crap out of, any grappling around the head and neck. Simple!

One point that came out of the game for me. Surely there has to be an on field sanction for a player who gets reported 2, let alone 3 times in a game, as Piakura did. I’d say 10 minutes in the bin for the second and each subsequent reporting.

I thought he initially made them privately via text to the club, which then proceeded to leak them to the media, hence they went public. I don’t think Churchill said anything publicly until he learned the media would be reporting it. The fact that someone at the club leaked them suggests that there is an element in the club that wants to stir the pot and cause trouble. I’d be looking for whoever that is and sacking them. Rod Churchill just stated an opinion, which has no more weight than anybody else’s. The club, NRL and Latrell should ignore it.
