Hi Machooka and Sheek.

Although I agree that cancer is a poor choice of word in some respects it is interesting that cancer is inevitable in the human condition. As we live longer, our cells divide more, ever increasing the chance of replication error and mutation, leading to cancer.

That being the case, even as applied to Cricket which was on the wane prior to T20, it is better to have a cancer that is known,
controllable and treatable than the alternate scenario. Imagine if it was taken away from the ACB, rebel competition, split broadcasters ….. oh wait maybe there’s some deja vu.

It is a crowded sports marketplace, and T20 fills a real need for those with short attention spans. Bemoan as much as you like Sheek, but that is the world we live in. On another note, far more young children attend and are engaged with cricket than what I remember of the 80s and 90s. I was there at the SCG when the “Hadlee’s A Banker” chant was in full flight. My grandmother was covering my ears. Craig McDermott hit him for 6… but I digress. My younger brother and I were the youngest in our bay that day.

So whilst there are issues with the timing and therefore quality of the competition I can’t see it going away anytime soon.

Even if the young fans don’t all stick enough will. And that is what will keep the sport you love going, at all levels.

BBL triple treat has to be the future of scheduling

Travis Head Century v ? sixers in Adelaide where he hit 50 runs off 4 overs

Jake Lehmann hitting a 6 to win against the Canes in 16

Weatherald Century in the Final in 2018

Also the Weatherald flick catch from over the boundary has to be the best catch I’ve seen in any form of the game…

I’ve got plenty of arguments against your case but need more than 2 minutes to put it together…

BBL triple treat has to be the future of scheduling

Hi David. I think you and I would both agree many players lack greatness in the 6 inches above the ears. I also get frustrated with Maxwell. We have seen him apply himself both internationally and at Shield level in the longer form
– but now the idiotic selectors won’t give him a chance. However, I don’t have a problem with his trick shots in the BBL as he is perfectly capable of playing them and they give him an advantage. I don’t think his application in the longer form now has any relation to T20. He has been able to shift mindset in the past, depending on the format (AB DeVilliers is the greatest exponent of this I have ever seen). This is going to be a necessary skill going forwards for many players.

Cricket Australia should ban all trick shots

Hi David. I think your point about the basics is valid but the extension to banning shots is frankly ridiculous. Maxwell is hard to bowl to because he has these shots. It makes the bowler second guess themselves and puts Maxwell at an advantage.

He has had a serviceable BBL so far. BBL, whether you like it or not, is helping to keep Cricket alive and well not only in Australia but around the world. Entertaining cricket is part of that.

When you look at a thriving professional league such as the NBA a bit of history puts things in perspective. Initially, players dunking the ball was seen as rude and disrespectful. Players dunking would be intentionally fouled. In 1960s College basketball it was even banned for a number of years (sound familiar?). Now it is an exciting (and essential) part of the game. The same thing has happened with the three point shot over the past 5-7 years. Steph Curry has lead the charge to change basketball completely. Advanced stats show even his “bad” 3
Point attempts are more efficient than 2 point attempts.

Once again the game is changing and evolving.

Cricket needs to change and evolve as well. Analysis of batsmen is getting better and better – witness Peter Handscomb’s decline. “Trick shots” tip the advantage back to the batsman.

By all means, tell junior coaches to hammer in the basics, but don’t forget that BBL is about entertainment as well.

Cricket Australia should ban all trick shots

I was checking before I made a further comment but I think you and Geoff are being a bit harsh on Travis Head.

Although there have been some silly shots he has scored 14% of all of Australia’s runs this year in tests. To me that is enough to retain his spot, particularly as we bat to 8.

Finch, S Marsh, M Marsh all need to go before he does.

Another Test selection embarrassment after Australia's Melbourne meltdown

Spot on Geoff. Spinning all rounder must go to Maxwell. Finch to be dropped for Burns. Already a better look and feel to the team.
Renshaw does need to find some form though.
Can we start a twitter campaign for Maxwell?

Another Test selection embarrassment after Australia's Melbourne meltdown

Hi David,

I have to fact check your article here.

Your stats for Perth and Adelaide are mixed up. Adelaide had approximately 110000 to the match.

In fact, if MCG numbers continue to decline then Adelaide will comfortably win on a per capita basis.

The only thing that may save the Vic’s is their large expat Indian population!

Victorians sure know how to vote with their feet at major sporting events

Have we hit a point where we need to doctor the SCG to favour spin? In australian conditions Lyon looks the best bowler from either team?

The precarious state of the Indian Test team

IAP isn’t a great bloke either ….

The making of Tim Paine, Australian captain

That’s a risk I’d be prepared to take.

Even I can get the ball to swing a lot in these conditions. Which is really saying something.

Composed Head upstages impatient teammates

This weather in adelaide = a swinging ball. I think go T20 style here and get to 250 and out quick. Indian top order will collapse in these conditions.

Screaming eventually falls on deaf ears. You have to have something to back it up…

England stuff the Wallabies - again

I know. But at least there was some effort in that first half.

England stuff the Wallabies - again

I suspect it would have mentally been more helpful for the Wallabies than a 5 point swing.

Poor calls happen and one helped the Wallabies in argentina.

However, they dwell on it and can’t move on. Probably related to the coach.

They need to leave that to us as whining fans and not give a half arsed effort as a result.

England stuff the Wallabies - again

Now I don’t agree with the rule but as it had been interpreted the past few years that was a no arm tackle by Farrell on Rodda. Should have been a penalty try and 18-13 at the half.

Instead Wallabies go down in the first 5 of the second half, the heads go down and terrible mistakes creep in.

The Wallabies have to learn to put bad decisions behind them and keep their intensity. There is a real lack of not only skill, but effort across the board.

Unfortunately I now agree that Cheika is out of ideas and must go prior to the RWC.

England stuff the Wallabies - again

Fair enough. Was making a sad attempt at humor.

Back agree with a poster above – hotels have perfectly good lobby bars.

Why are we making outdated binary discrimination here people?

Great article.

I’ve always loved Union as a game for all shapes and sizes and also the tactical elements.

I think we have to accept that Union will always now be a tier below League and AFL.

Professionalism has bought a higher risk of injury due to bigger bodies and the risk of repetitive strain injuries with more intense training.

I don’t have any answers either but only think sometimes you have to step backwards to go forwards.

Yep. I wonder if Rory Sloane would be better suited.

Tex should still have a season without injury to prove himself.

Agree Sammy. The AFL is very even at the moment with the exception of a few cellar dwellers. An injury free run should see the Crows well in the 8.

I think the crows should still try to trade up. That said, with FA the way it is they may be happy to rely on Lukosius or Rankine coming back in a few years.

Now that he has had his surgery hopefully Tex returns at full form.

Much like Buddy, Tex had been playing all year with a significant injury.

However, unlike Buddy, Tex tried to overcompensate with physical play. He disappeared out of games too often and innacurate kicking was too common.

A fit Tex is the key to the Adelaide forward line. However, after the bye the Crows made a huge mistake in not just letting Tex have his surgery and playing the rest of the season with Jenkins as the key. I think this was because of the (mistaken) belief that Jenkins isn’t good enough to attract the number 1 defender.

Jenkins showed he is ok without Tex. He dominated Rance in round 2.

The management of Tex is the biggest failing of the season IMHO.
