If you didn’t like the 12th man, you won’t like it…

But if that is the case you are within the sarcophagus of sadness and no one can help you.

Excerpt from ‘The Autobahn of Autobiographies’ by Damien ‘The Bowlologist’ Fleming

G’day Geoff,

What a fantastic match. Thanks for the great write up.

My own memory was of attending 3 of the first 4 days with a few mates. They were long days in the sun, but at least we had the amber refreshments that were a little out of reach of those in the field.

On day 5 I went to work. I got to check the score at lunch and got a pleasant surprise as I assumed the draw was inevitable, just like the English.

I managed to wrap up work by 3pm and drove the 20 minutes into the oval at record pace. Finding a few friends at the now demolished Bradman Bar (where the Sourher stand now resides) we settled in and watched an amazing victory.

I have equally bad memories of watching the same fixture in 2010 with an English colleague of mine. By then the smartphone was in full swing and he was sending a billion selfies home as England went on to victory.

Really can’t beat the Adelaide Oval though for a great test match day out.

When Shane Warne spun a dead Test into life - and Australia to the most unlikely of victories

Great point. I agree this is playing a part

Why Rugby Australia are sticking with Cheika, and why we have more pain to endure

My argument for Carey is based on future potential as I have a fairly bleak view of the current set up. I basically want to erase the whole current scheme and start again. But you are correct in saying Paine has done pretty much all that could be asked of him. I just don’t see him as the sort of dominant keeper-batsman that other international teams have.

Hypothetical – if Paine gets injured who is your replacement then on current form?

Did I say that? I’m referring to one player for whom a potential excellent replacement is available. But if it means the Marsh lads are out then yes

“…. was the fourth player in history to score 500 runs and take 50 dismissals in a season and broke the record for most wicket-keeper dismissals in a season with 59”

Did he break Gilly’s record? His shield batting average is almost the same Gilly’s at the same point in their career, allowing for the years he was chasing an AFL career.

But to me he is not a long term solution.

Consensus on here is we are
going to continue to get badly beaten in tests – at least until Smith is back.

Why are we not blooding a guy who to me has the potential to be the next Gilchrist?

Misleading use of stats

FC averages
Paine 30
Carey 27

Carey has a lot more future.

That’s what we need to build towards.

The Liebke Ratings: Pakistan vs Australia, second Test

I like your team.

I like Paine’s temperament but he is a weak link

I would have Carey in there with Finch as Captain.

It depends on what surgery UK has.

If he has a meniscal arthroscopic debridement he could realistically be back training in 2-3 weeks and playing in 4-6 weeks.

If he needs a meniscal repair (which if possible is the right thing to do long term – but depends on the type of tear) he will be 6-8 weeks off training and back in 10-12 weeks.

So there is a bit of variability there depending on what his surgeon finds when they go in.

Wesley was awesome again today.

Could be NBA material with a little more athleticism.

That said, Ingles made it and is great so there has to be a chance…

Wesley returns to Melbourne in cracking NBL start

This is why I was completely shocked how much the Dees “paid” for Lever. According to stats I’d seen he was at least 20% chance of another ACL rupture (non contact ACL injury below a certain age carries massive future risk)

Dear Fremantle, I hope you know what you're doing

Haha. Yep – but even with a perfect Fixation the damage to the cartilage is done at the time of the injury. And surgeons and scientists still haven’t come up with any reliable way to regenerate human cartilage.

Still could get several good years.

I wouldn’t sign anyone up after this injury for a long term deal though (4 plus).

Dear Fremantle, I hope you know what you're doing

Navicular fractures predispose to premature mid foot arthritis, even when healed.

Metatarsal fractures usually heal but some types of 5th metatarsal fracture are problematic.

The navicular fracture would be more of a concern – this injury has finished off a few professional sportspeople.

Dear Fremantle, I hope you know what you're doing

G’day Don. I think you make a great point about Nathan Gray. After some of those atrocious defensive efforts in the first half he has some serious explaining to do.

Has the Wallabies' Houdini-like escape against the Pumas saved Michael Cheika and his coaches?

Wrong. High contact on Rioli. Plenty of pics available. 50/50 call so move along.

Matthews criticises grand final umpires for 'choke'

Where are you Cam? At least D Lord lobs up to defend his poorly thought out opinion pieces. You were wrong picking Melbourne and obviously no one but a few Salty Vic’s agrees with you on this one…

A close grand final does not a classic make

Power = piece

A close grand final does not a classic make

I suspect he had a better power ready to go but like plenty of other “experts” was wrong

A close grand final does not a classic make

Agree completely.

Simpson master stroke in slowing the game down in the second.

So many complexities.

Yet poor Cam is making his VB salty with all the tears…

A close grand final does not a classic make

Well Cam the VFL didn’t win.

And you are salty…

And I am not surprised

A close grand final does not a classic make

Wooooosh…..

Grand final bound! Billy Slater free to play NRL decider

If the comp was fair it should be a West Coast home GF.

Hopefully they can beat the VFL system.

This is why AFL can never be a true national game.

Rotate the GF and get rid of the corporates and MCC.

Let the true fans have tickets and at least give people in footy heartlands of WA and SA reasonable access to the game they support (and perhaps saved) financially.

Hi Josh,

I understand you don’t like the Crows.

It shows.

You say due to experience the Crows underperformed.

Yet as you admit

“Brad Crouch didn’t play a game all year, Brodie Smith only the last two, while Sloane and Walker in particular both had to deal with significantly interrupted seasons.”

This is 4 of the top 7 Crows!

This is a tight competition overall. Richmond were outstanding (although beaten by an injury depleted Crows at AO).

The Crows have a few demons –
no doubt – but a few more decent games out of those injured players and 2-3 more wins = finals.

Good authority informs me that Walker has been playing hurt and out of match shape all season.

Perhaps the biggest mistake the Crows have made is continuing to play him – particularly as Jenkins seems to have played better without him this year.

Quest for pick 1: Can the Adelaide Crows land Jack Lukosius?
