Well said Thunderguts!

The ARU made the right decision about Israel Folau

Yes the timing seems to be completely off in this situation but right now we are dealing with speculation and he said, she said finger pointing from a very unhappy Folau and Tah’s team. Who know what would have happened if it was a Wallabies game. I would like to think that the same thing would have happened as player welfare should also be an important priority for the ARU. Too many questions but it is interested to see that Folau has now taken down his tweets and retweets over the weekend showing his disappointment in the decision. I guess there was an ultimatum there?

Where was Folau’s manager advising him over the weekend? Why do the Tah’s think it’s ok to speak out like this? This would most certainly never happen in NZ and this type of mum and dad fighting needs to be done out of the media.

But were the Brumbies also pulling those large crowds because the Wallabies were dominating at the same time? Now the Wallabies are in disarray after the Dean’s era, the Brumbies are dominating Super Rugby but crowds are woeful…..It would be interesting to see if the Wallabies started to dominate again and the Brumbies success continued, would the crowds also improve?

Sorry @nickoldschool while this article focuses on the Wallabies brand and marketing, I am a firm supporter of player welfare. Player safety and life after rugby is vitally important and would believe the whole reason they stopped Folau from playing was because their doctors didn’t think he was fit to play. Shouldn’t we actually be celebrating that?

Hi Hog, I’ve only touched very lightly here on the Wallabies brand and to be honest it needs considerable work before it could become a trusted and well known entity again. If I had my way, the ARU would conduct a complete Inside, Out Brand Review and then implement strategies that would create a strong base to build the future growth of rugby in this country. The Wallabies brand is a great foundation to start from but this would only be the beginning. The ARU also need to focus on a real grass roots strategy to grow the game from junior levels to the elite. Take away the old boys club and involve the fans and other groups in the community and you would be amazed at what could happen with rugby in Australia. The ARU need to think outside the box, they need to target women (a group severely neglected and yet influential in the decision making in the home) and they need real interaction with the rugby community. Until this happens, rugby will continue to decline.

Looks like they aren’t getting the numbers for Saturday’s Bledisloe. Silver tickets are now being sold for $45 which is a massive 60% discount!! Not sure how long the sale is for but it’s disappointing to see that they are heavily discounting instead of setting reasonable prices to start with.

Are the Wallabies pricing out potential fans?

I guess the T in the silly Commonwealth Bank ads were right about Magnussen then?

Let’s just hope this fires them up and they perform better in the rest of the meet. A bit of humility wouldn’t also go astray.

London 2012: Men's 4x100m relay misfire in upset

I used to think the same thing about TC but after I watched his interview on Fox Sports re: his re-signing, I changed my mind. He’s intelligent, well spoken and loyal to the club which is something that is becoming rarer in the world of rugby.

Waratahs want to feel the love

Not sure about this new breed of players but John Eales attributed winning the 1998 Bledisloe match in Christchurch after the Aussies in the crowd broke out into a spontaneous rendition of Waltzing Matilda.

While it’s definitely no match for the Haka, it’s still something that evokes emotion. I love it when the crowd sings it.

What's happened to the Bledisloe Cup?

I’ve been impressed with Nick Cummins this year at the Force. Not much has been said about him but he has been rewarded with a call up to the initial Wallabies camp.

I’m actually really concerned with what’s going on at the Force and unless the ARU step in, we could very well see the club stumble and collapse. If they fail to keep Pocock from leaving to the Brumbies (which is looking more likely every day), then their membership numbers will dramatically reduce and the crowd will disappear.

Oh and it was Sam Lane who was called into the Reds only to suffer a devastating knee injury against the Stormers in week 9.

Australia's 2012 Super Rugby postmortem

Agree with you about Waltzing Matilda Johnno! I wrote an article before the Wales test series about bringing it back to the game. http://www.theroar.com.au/2012/06/07/wallabies-fans-bring-back-waltzing-matilda/ It worked at the Brisbane game in the section I was in but the rest of the stadium didn’t follow through. Unless the ARU get behind it again, it will stay gone forever which is a shame.

Yes I too would like to know where this ‘dynasty’ theory originated. One Super Rugby title does not a dynasty make and I certainly would never have used that term after our win last year.

Why all the hate for the Queensland Reds?

See both those slogans have been manufactured by politicians so never fully embraced by real Queenslanders (well any that I know). They actually had to revert to offering the previous slogan of “The Sunshine State’ for our rego plates because so many people hated ‘The Smart State’ brought in by the Beattie government.

Why all the hate for the Queensland Reds?

Akann, the AB’s are the best team in the world and when you lose it makes the rest of us feel like that maybe, just maybe we can beat you guys. I spent many years living in London with a Kiwi flatmate and had to endure every time the Wallabies were thrashed by the AB’s and it was sometimes pretty hard to take.

In saying that, I was in NZ for the RWC final last year and proudly wore a Richie McCaw 7 shirt and cheered for you guys to win the title. Was a great night of celebrations and now the ‘chokers’ label can be put to rest for a while.

Part of the discussion in the forums discusses this exact idea of each Super Rugby franchise having a B team in the competition. Would be fantastic to see it get off the ground.

CAMPO: Can't modern day players think for themselves?

AWCMONREF, please tell me where I said in the article that the Brumbies had it easier? Pretty sure I said we won the conference because the much favoured Brumbies stumbled at the final hurdle. Oh and your belittling comments towards me (‘your article smacks of someone in need of atttention and very little rugby knowledge’ ) are exactly what this article is about so thank you for proving my point.

Why all the hate for the Queensland Reds?

Chester, I’m sorry that you were treated that way at Reds v Tahs game. It always embarrasses me when this type of behaviour happens at the rugby!

I get that QC isn’t liked very much but then again I don’t like Tom Carter much and yet I would still support the Tahs should they make the finals and aren’t playing the Reds. It’s sad to say that a lot of Aussie supporters wouldn’t do the same for the Reds.

Why all the hate for the Queensland Reds?

I don’t think he would have been taken off. Lately we’ve seen a lot of players take huge hits, stay on the field and be deemed heroes for getting up and playing on. Take a look at the hit on Gio Aplon in the Stormers v Rebels game in week 18, he should have been taken off because he clearly looks concussed and yet he gets up and keeps playing. If the affects of concussion are going to be taken seriously, SANZAR need to look at a mandatory time off when someone gets a serious head knock during a match.

CAMPO: Can't modern day players think for themselves?

There is a great discussion over in the Green and Gold Rugby forums discussing a potential 3rd tier competition and the form it could take. Perhaps a working group should form to see if we can then lobby the ARU to get this happening.

CAMPO: Can't modern day players think for themselves?

From what I’ve heard, Harris got a really bad head knock during the game and Link didn’t want to risk using him at 10. He was apparently babbling nonsense at half time which actually concerns me more than the changes in the backline. Surely he should have been taken off for the remainder of the game?

CAMPO: Can't modern day players think for themselves?

I wonder if it’s because the Reds were the underdogs before 2011 and 2012?

Why all the hate for the Queensland Reds?

Yes you’re right some Reds can spew the same amount of vitriol and I don’t like that either. I’ll admit to not liking Robbie Deans (actually would have preferred Alan Jones to be appointed in the first place) and yes the amount of Waratahs in the Wallabies squad does concern me based on their form this year. I would actually prefer to see more Brumbies in the side, they were fantastic this year and deserve any kudos coming their way.

Why all the hate for the Queensland Reds?

Lol thanks mania, I’ll try my best to harden up next time. The problem I have is that I thought rugby was a gentleman’s game and above all of this? I guess it’s a different story online.

Why all the hate for the Queensland Reds?

I wonder if it’s been less exciting because, dare I say it, we were without Quade Cooper for the majority of the season?

Why all the hate for the Queensland Reds?

Probably because we love our team and will support them until the death. It’s been a tough road for us and even though we won last year, a lot of people couldn’t even let us have that win without trying to bring us down.
