On seniority for one. Wonder if he gets the job when Tim’s had enough. Or will they bring back Smithy?

Bancroft, Labuschagne and Siddle in my Ashes XI

Hope it doesn’t happen but who would take over as skipper if Paine had to miss a Test or two, considering Cummins and Head are the co-vice-captains? And would Wade take the gloves or does Carey come into the squad?

Shakib should have got man of the series at the World Cup.

Left right out. Lealiifano’s a much better bet at 10. Matt Toomua and Reece Hodge are excellent back-ups. No need to put an idiot there, i.e. O’Connor, Beale or Cooper.

What is James O’Connor’s best position for the Wallabies?

Smith 3, then Head, Labuschagne, Wade.

Can’t really argue with your assessment, Ronan, but I think there’ll be some discussion about the two contentious pace spots, Pattinson/Starc/Siddle/Hazelwood. Who actually picks the team on this tour, anyway? It’s chnaged over the years.
Fair enough Pattinson, but Starc would hate sitting on the bench, he’s not used to being left out. Hazelwood might just get the nod over Siddle. Labuschagne could play a decent role in this series. If he can get enough runs early on, and Paine gives him a decent bowl, he could be good for … I’ll stretch it to about 15 wickets.

Haylett-Petty might get the job, with Banks on the bench. Or Banks fullback, with DHP on the wing. Reece Hodge should be in the side at 13 but can play just about anywhere in the backline. Kurtley Beale, 10, 12 or 15. Fine players all, don’t need Folau.

Quite right Neutral, the NCL thinks this halfwit can advance its cause. Oh, hang on, this is Straya … bugger.

The real problem the ICC will probably never address is that 50-over cricket is on its way out.
Correct. The ICC and the various national boards won’t address it because television contracts are locked in for the next few years. Full details on the 2018-2023 Future Tours Program are available here: https://www.icc-cricket.com/news/742353
Before the one-day World Cup in England in June-July next year — in which the 10 teams play each other once before the finals — these are the projected numbers of ODIs for the leading nations, as per the FTP: Australia 19, England 16, India 26-30 (inc Asia Cup), New Zealand 14, Pakistan 25-29 (inc Asia Cup), South Africa 21, Sri Lanka 15-19 (inc Asia Cup), West Indies 16.
Projected ODIs for 2022-23: Australia 23, England 14, India 28-32 (inc Asia Cup), South Africa 18.
Nice try Keith, but one-dayers won’t be going away any time soon. TV companies particularly like the eight-hour format and there’s no way they will agree to a cutback.

Do we need 50-over cricket?

Does Foley get on with Beale and Folau or is there a bit of friction there?

Kurtley Beale, Israel Folau and Bernard Foley inspire a Super Rugby semi berth

So who are the Socceroos, Evan? Will they go at it like the Sunwolves? Or maybe the Blues. Don’t know why people get upset about someone having a bit of of fun.

Why is cricket's non-striker forced to be a second umpire?

Steve Smith the first. Other umpire Steve Bucknor.

An all-time international XI of Steves

Vale Catchy. An all-time great and a great man. Sheek, you could probably add another who played only two Tests, Steve Merrick, the coal truck driver from Singleton.

Fair enough, I took more than 60 literally, if only a fraction over.

Superbat Smith clones the Bradman method to become Australia's next-best batsman

Spiro says “Only Adam Voges of the other batsmen to have had 20 innings, in 20 Tests and 39 innings, averages over 60, at 61.87.” Well, Pollock’s 41 innings @ 60.97 and Headley’s 40 @ 60.83 look like they qualify. Am I misreading this?

Wood surely comes into contention for Melbourne with Overton injured. Agreed on Malan who looked pretty tidy. Wonder if he has a bit of variation up his sleeve.

Five Thoughts From Day 3 of the 3rd Test

From the West Australian this week:
Perth Scorchers will have to defy adversity yet again this summer, with injuries and international call-ups meaning they are likely to have only 11 fit players to choose from for their Big Bash League opener against Sydney Sixers on December 23.
The Scorchers will be forced to call-up replacement players in order to name a full 13-man squad for their first game, with wicketkeeper Sam Whiteman, young all-rounder Cam Green and fast bowlers Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Coulter-Nile all sidelined with injury.
Perth’s 18-man squad has been further depleted by the loss of Cameron Bancroft, Shaun Marsh and Mitch Marsh to the Test team.

It says they claim to be working with a fixer in Australian cricket known as The Silent Man works with a World Cup-winning all-rounder but doesn’t state that the player is Australian.

Time for Cricket Australia to bite the bullet over selectors

Apart from six hitting, Miller would put the errant English cricketers to shame with his all-night drinking exploits, turning up to games still in his dinner suit etc.
