Part time sports reporter, full time sports addict. Adelaide born and bred, but that doesn't mean I don't follow sporting pursuits all over the globe. Football (Aussie Rules or 'soccer'), Cycling, Cricket, Baseball, Golf, Curling, Hot Dog Eating...doesn't really matter what it is, if we're keeping score, I'm interested. Will be posting many articles during the 2013 Santos Tour Down Under.

Nibali has rejoined the peloton and made his way to the front, finding a cozy spot on Cancellara’s wheel.

The peloton is only 45 seconds behind Visconti and Huzarski, while Nibali is only a further 16 seconds behind them. He’s going to rejoin shortly I’d imagine.

Nibali is riding strongly to try and catch back. Maybe he’d be able to go faster if the Italian team Skoda wasn’t in his way, he’s stuck right behind it…I’m sure he’s not drafting, that’d be illegal.
Elite Men’s Road Race: 2013 UCI World Championships live updates, blog
The crashes have caused a few splits in the peloton, 30 odd riders at the head, 15 seconds back to another 20 odd riders.

239 kilometres completed, 8 of the 10 laps done and dusted, 2 to go. Visconti and Huzarski have just 33 kilometres left to ride.
Simon Clarke did not crash, the reports were wrong, he’s safely tucked away in the main bunch. Australia, we have a pulse!

Visconti and Barta have 1’10” over the peloton

Simon Clarke also appeared to go down. Australia’s hopes of a World Champion are over for 2013.
Nibali is back up and trying to catch the peloton, but he looks pained and it looks highly doubtful for him. He’s got lots of skin missing.

35 kilometres to go.
Nibali has been involved in a crash, he’s down and he looks like he’s in real big trouble, it looks like his race is over. Paolini is also down. Visconti appears to be Italy’s best hope now.
Elite Men’s Road Race: 2013 UCI World Championships live updates, blog
Visconti has joined Huzarski now.

So with Visconti just 12 seconds behind Huzarski, who’s going to do the pacemaking in the peloton? The Italians won’t be willing to chase one of their own down.
Simon Clarke is still in the peloton, he’s our only hope but he’s certainly a chance. Cancellara, Gilbert and Sagan are all still there as well.
The rain has stopped for now too. An exciting finish is ahead.

Visconti is just 20 seconds behind Huzarski now.

Visconti is off!
He’s left the other attackers behind, passed Barta and he only has Huzarski ahead of him.

So the Kelderman group of 4, which appears to be a group of 3 minus Kelderman now, is opening up a decent break over the peloton. Dangerous group, that’s for sure.

Huzarski has left Barta behind. He’s the solo leader of the elite men’s road race….for now.

Kelderman and Preidler have been joined by Visconti and Gautier.

David Tanner’s leg is not broken I’m happy to report.

The bunch are 1’44” behind the leaders. 3 laps (50 kilometres) left.

The leaders – Jan Barta and Bartosz Huazrski – are about to get caught by Wilco Kelderman and Georg Preidler. Not sure where the other names that were supposedly in the break came from, there are definitely only 2 riders, though Visconti and Gautier are not far behind Kelderman and Preidler.

Gautier (France) and Visconti (Italy) have also launched an attacked. They are 42 seconds behind the leaders, while the Kelderman group has closed the gap to 25 seconds.

The USA’s Stetina is also in the group of 5 attacking.

Five riders in the attack on the peloton, they have closed the gap to the 2 leaders to 54 seconds. Kelderman is one of the attackers, Priedler of Austria is there, as is Voeckler of France.

The Italians are being forced to defend for a change now, little attacks coming all over the place. The race is starting to heat up, figuratively at least.

63 kilometres to the finish still, it’s a long, long day in the saddle that’s for sure, and in conditions like this it’s a true test of character. Whoever is crowned World Champion today will have certainly earnt it.
