Stage 12 of the 2013 Vuelta a Espana takes the riders on a 164 kilometre ride from Maella to Tarragona, a relatively flat stage with just one categorized climb on the route, up the Category 3 Alto del Collet which is 7.5 kilometres in length at a gentle 3.6% average gradient.

With the climb coming some 70 kilometres from the finish line, a bunch finish is expected. Can Orica-GreenEDGE set Michael Matthews up for another stage win, or will Garmin-Sharp’s Tyler Farrar or Omega Pharma-Quick Step’s Gianni Meersman break through for their first stage win of the Vuelta?

With the climbers and time-triallers dominating the points classification, any sprinter harbouring hopes of donning the green jersey in Madrid needs to score maximum points today.

Astana’s Vincenzo Nibali returns to the leader’s red jersey today after out-performing previous leader Chris Horner of Radioshack-Leopard Trek in yesterday’s time trial, with the Italian now holding a 33 second advantage of Team Saxo-Tinkoff’s Nicholas Roche, while Alejandro Valverde of Movistar also went past Horner into third place overall, 46 seconds behind Nibali.
