I think Warne almost won the series by bowling Gatting as he did. He had a massive psychological impact.

Australia in box seat to retain Ashes today

I suggest your club bowlers weren’t as likely to take your head off with one just short as Archer is.

Actually he has been poor in tests for some time.

What happened to Faf du Plessis, also captain. Three times caught tampering. About three matches suspension. Let it go eh? Bowlers have tampered with the ball at least since Imran Khan carried a bottle top in his pocket when bowling for NSW. I do not condone it, but it is not unique to Smith.

Indeed he could if he made his thirty it would be an improvement. I suspect age mayhave dimmed Warner’s reflexes or something. His lack of footwork and poor shot selection have always been an issue and I wonder if he can’t get away with it as easily?

Marnus Labuschagne could be the player Australia have waited for

We see a lot of poor technique now. I remember asking Jack Fingleton about bodyline when I was a schoolboy. Watch the ball and know where it is was his dictum. In the prehelmet days, batters had no second line and I think in some ways technique has faded on the assumption that the helmet is adequate protection. Some of what we see would have been suicide against Holding and Roberts and Lillee. Lillee and Thommo of course caused the helmet in a way. Tony Greig’s first one was in the repair shop after he batted though.I am not saying don’t wear them. I think they still need refinement though. We see concussions from a blow on the helmet alone and that should not really be the case.

Who are you dropping if not Khawaja, Ronan? I think the model for the bowler is Steve Waugh. Until he gave up bowling he was someone who would get a serious batter out off their favourite shot. 92 wickets with a best of 5-28. Pity Marnus has no batter to stay with him. Good temperament counts in this form of cricket.

I sure did and I am not convinced that our bowling is up to it, but hoping like hell to be proved wrong.

Smith and Wade flatten England

No they had to sack him, as would any organisation in RA’s position (see what happened to his cousin who tried in on at St Gregory’s?). That does not make the last part of your comment untrue though and I agree completely

Is another league player really the answer for union?

Especially when the boss was a failure as a League CEO where the club is still putting itself back together.

Is another league player really the answer for union?

Certainly the case in my home town. Not that Rugby ever shows up in schools here.

Is another league player really the answer for union?

None of the above would do well in rugby, where there is a contest for the ball all the time. I am struggling to think of many who came to the Wallabies from league and made a good contribution. I include Folau in this, he is a great athlete, but not in my view a top rugby player. Mind you it would be good if we had the same back line 2 weeks running at Wallaby or Waratah level. In any case it is good forwards we need and there are few of them to be found in league. Develop the ones that can play, get those U20s.

Is another league player really the answer for union?

Because most of them are not that good at it. The positional play is nearly always rubbish especially if they began in league. Example Wendell Sailor was a great ball runner, but his wing leaked tries.

Few coaches come in and hit the top straight away (Freddy did at Roosters, but it went to hell thereafter). The Broncos were old and over the hill and that does not come good in a season. The Storm can flog any team, especially after a bad game last time. Sometimes is is not the coach. Clubs do bad things, for example the Titans sacked a good coach basically over Hayne, who then cleared off to the Eels leaving further destruction which they are only now recovering from. Fortunately for Brad Arthur he had a few runs on the board. I will admit at this stage that I have a passionate dislike for all things Bronco (and Manly due to my rugby playing uncle who was a Norths life member), but removing Seibold at this stage seems a poor management strategy and we do hear rumours of a bit of infighting in the back office.

Seibold and Kearney under fire for Friday failures

Paine is there due to lack of options as skipper. The record of captain/wk/batter is poor in the long run. They usually fail with the bat first. I would not have picked Bancroft yet personally. But Warner, Khawaja, Wade all need the cat o nine tails.

Steve Smith once again saves Australia from Ashes embarrassment

I don’t know about you mate, but I do not know they will be better second time around. The lack of focus and the failure to rotate the strike have been there for ages. Is there loss of collective cricket IQ in Australia. Smith and Head are the exceptions, they are busy. Last summer against India we saw exactly the same issue. Sick of Poms hypocrisy, never thought of Kohli as the role model, but his World Cup attitude says a lot for the man.

When did Siddle last finish an innings fit to bowl the next one? I cannot remember. We have NO bowling backup from the top 6 either. There is a fragility about the English top order, but I am not convinced this attack threatens test batsmen. Pattinson has been picked on the strength of a pissweak Shield comp. Siddle is long past his use by date I think, but I might wake up tomorrow and find I am wrong.

Faf du Plessis, should he be playing? He has two strikes for tampering.

Second innings ton when the rest failed again. Bugger me.

Patterson ton versus Sri Lanka upstages Test rivals

Lack of cunning

Glenn Maxwell dropping a sitter? Not remotely possible

How did Lynn go against the sixers? Oh bugger. Another crap performance. Overrated.

Glenn Maxwell dropping a sitter? Not remotely possible

Not surprising. Nothing in the pitch for him and not one test when the bowlers got a day’s break.

Hazlewood ruled out of Sri Lanka Tests

Sorry you do not get to turn up too intoxicated to play and remain in any Australian team for mine. And I think you are wrong about Maxwell’s innate superiority, but he deserves more opportunities to develop his temperament which was not correct, but he appeared to have got it. Crook coaching and poor policy.

Except Tana that after a decade of observation their game does not get better. Starc and Hazlewood are bowling worse than last year. Johnson did not improve. His best was always great and his worst was awful. New batters usually fade and get dropped. Even Clarke got worse and went back to shield and own coach.

Patterson ton versus Sri Lanka upstages Test rivals

Yeah. I thought Maxwell had really arrived at what I hoped he could be.
