Like many, I am mad about sports. I enjoy watching, reading, talking and writing about all sports. I think The Roar is a great concept. Let the robust sport discussion begin.

Pearce has to go. NSW doesn’t have creative ball playing halves. We have running five eights; Maloney, Carney, Sutton. The half needs to be able to make the right decisions with the pass and take advantage of opportunities with his kicking game. Pearce has failed everytime with this. It is high pressure, and he is capable of doing this at club level, but he’s chances have been ample at SOO level, and his time is up.

Sutton has flourished due to Reynolds controlling the game and doing the bulk of the kicking. Sutton is allowed to pick his moments and run. We have to see whether Reynolds can achieve the same at SOO level. We know we need more from our half if we are to beat Qld. Trying hard as Laurie puts it, isn’t good enough. Our forwards didn’t dominate, but they got us in position numerous times. Our outside backs have pace and class. Our halves didn’t set-up the tries our possession and field position demanded.

No more Pearce. Move on.

Origin 2013 Game 3: NSW drop chances, must drop Pearce

It was clear from game two that Merritt isn’t cut out for SOO. Jamming in tactic or not, other comments are correct in saying that Merritt just isn’t built for that arena. Of course Inglis is going to stand up for his clubmate at press conferences, and it also helps him to win game three if Merritt is there. At this stage in NSW’s desperate attempt to finally win a series, the message that is sent is irrelevant. The best possible team is needed, the only game that matters for now is Wednesday week. Merritt had a tough game to enter as his first, but the reality is NSW needs more than a good finisher when going up against this Qld side.

Merit where Merritt’s due

I can see you enjoyed the game and result last night. I’m happy for you.
I don’t often hear Jamie Lyon considered a whinger, or incapable of rep selection. Unbiased observations, I’m sure.
Did Manly just become thugs last night? Or have they been the last 5 years? When they won 2 grand finals and numerous finals games. Sonny Bill and Sam Burgess are quality players. So are DCC and Watmough. DCC is second to Cronk and rightly so, but many clubs would have him any day. Watmough played a whale of a game and would be starting in SOO on that type of performance. You’re watching something else if you saw otherwise.
Souths defended better and took their chances. Manly bombed too many tries. Souths deserved the win. Let’s see how their season pans out.

Impressive Souths sink Manly 20-12 in NRL

Thanks for your comment, Angy Bird. I appreciate your feedback.

I’m glad you see my thoughts about Cronk’s all-round game being the best at present. You make a very good point about players that opposing coaches fear. I think your top two, Cronk and Smith, would be most feared and the two players any coach would choose to build a club around. For both their on-field and off-field qualities.

I think you’re spot on about SBW. He was solid in the first couple of games, but has played as well as any the last 2-3 games. If he continues in this vain all season, he could very well win the Dally M.

Thanks also for your suggestion of a rookie of the year article.

Cheers

A fair point. I was more thinking along the lines of winning multiple comps, which Farah might need to do if he is to place himself in the conversation.

Not being able to consistently lead his team to the finals in general hurts his case.

I’m not kidding you. I’m from NSW and would love for those four to be considered as good as the Qld players mentioned.

Marshall and Carney are not consistent enough. Gallen and Farah are right there at the top of the game. However, they haven’t won the NRL competitions and simply aren’t considered by most to be in the same class.

Cherry is playing well this year and he should only get better. Qld just keep producing quality backs.

There doesn’t seem to be much love for the New South Welshmen. Pearce at least seems to have a fan in Laurie Daley.
