Greg was a very astute captain but I doubt the majority of the team would have followed him into hell. I get the feeling if Ian asked them to, they would have. I also imagine the devil’s reaction upon seeing them arrive. Oh f..k, not you lot. Nothing to see here. On your way. Or am I thing of Bradman reacting that way…

As good a captain as Ian was, and a very good batsman, his legend status comes as much from his “stick it to the establishment” attitude and his involvement in WSC.

I always uses Ian Chappell as the template for a number three batsman. Doesn’t have to be the best in his team. Ian wasn’t. His brother Greg was, averaging 59 at number 4. Ian hated getting out as much as anyone I have ever watched. Good defensive, gutsy and could be aggressive if the openers got a good start.
As far as captaincy, I always apply the WWCD test. What would Chappelli do?

Will Pakistan… never heard of him

Will Pakistan hand the Aussies a reality check?

Or will the Australians give Pakistan a reality show cheque…
The 2nd Test documentary. Quite different from the first. Smiling faces at training, pillow fights at the end of the day… although Khawaja stuffed up when he forgot to add a quirky emoji to the player chat on Instagram.

Cool. Thanks for the clarfication. How does Border’s career line up using your calculations. I know he has one of the best 3rd innings averages of players since the 1970’s.

Brain fade, excluded, that was an excellent start to the series from the home side. Not sure how Cummins will sell the team selection call as being correct given Head was bowling the 17th over. Unless, of course, it was McDonald’s fault…or Pat just gives the old ‘I don’t hold the hose. Ahh classic ScoMo…

Do the cap scores change as the Innings progresses? Lose 3 wickets early and the middle order are required to score more. Alternatively, the openers put on 140 and the remaining batters cap lowers? How does the 3rd innings play out? How do you determine what score is needed by batsmen? Love the concept but can it not be a little subjective?

You left Steve Waugh out of your list. These guys hated getting out more than they loved looking good for 40 runs.
Always a big fan of Chappelli as a captain and perfect fit for a number 3. However, if I wanted to watch the best batsman bat, I watched Greg. Ian has seen first hand what Bradman and the Board has done to Bill Lawry and he was always up for that fight. Both when captain and after he was succeeded by his brother.

How weighted should 3rd innings runs be? 4th innings? How result dependent?
First and second innings averages are flawed but acceptable to some degree?
Not trying to be troublesome? Am interested in your thoughts.

My first thought is that your selection isn’t as random as you claim. If a player scores 200 but his teams loses, his average shouldn’t increase? Apparently, scores of 29, if part of a winning total, is fine and considered good. So Ponting’s 242 at Adelaide in 2003, isn’t good enough. Yet Ganguly’s 2nd innings of 12 was fine because India won?
Not sure this aligns with your thoughts but it appears to fit the implication of your comment. While I agree that averages may not be perfect as a measure, a measure they remain. In its place, what should be used?

Yet, despite the outliers one can find in an individual’s career, and your personal feelings about stats, test averages remain the most highly regarded measure of a player.

Ian’s brother, Greg, was twice as good to watch as Ian and far more successful too.

With our test captain identifying bravery as playing some aggressive shots, Travis Head could be the most courageous player on the planet.

Cummins open to Agar, Swepson call-ups for first Test, urgers batters to 'be brave'

Warne had considerably more success against Pakistan, in Australia than in Pakistan though he only played one series in Pakistan. He averaged 28 there but his overall average against them was 20.18.

FLEM'S VERDICT: Bat hit crazy - No doubt if you win toss but quick-heavy attack can still work

Those footmarks don’t help Lyon anyway. He bowls too straight to right handers to land in them.

Can the Aussies shake their subcontinent hoodoo?

Ian is entitled to his opinion but add to Langer’s coaching gig, to pick up the pieces after South Africa, and Langer is more than just a good batsman. Hold Chappelli in very high regard as both a captain and a number 3 batsmen, but Ian’s numbers alone don’t scream “Legend” either. Not sure anybody has suggested Langer was of the quality of either McGrath or Warne, so unsure what Ian is waffling about there.

You know I will be disappointed if Khawaja and Green don’t make 300’s this week and it will be all your fault.

Lyon predicts pitch won’t turn as Australia set sights on 3-0 series sweep

Well after the first test thrashing, not taking 20 wickets in the 2nd result in dropping the NSW quicks and Lyon for the 3rd tests. Cummins, as captain, plays with Boland and Green, supporting him. Agar and Swepson spin us to victory and Nathan never plays another test because selectors finally have their eyes open and see how often he is easy and safely played to the leg side, easing any scoreboard pressure. His 0/145 and 0/123 seal his fate. Selectors write “only if opposition has more than 7 lefties batting” on his file. They also mark Warner’s file, “Home tests only” and wonder why they hadn’t thought of it sooner. Khawaja, during the 2nd test was looking good for another ton to follow hos first test triple, but was dismissed when he flicked one off his legs in the air, straight into an outdoor setting chair. Inspired stuff from the Pakistan fielding coach after reading some of the Aussie training methods, pre McDonald.

The introduction of the leg slip seems to have him hesitant to play some shots he played with previous abandon. That and the change of line bowling to him has slowed his scoring down perhaps. Up until Wagner, anything on the stumps was swiftly heading to the leg side boundary. Without looking at his numbers, that is not how it seems, post Wagner.

The injuries from the PSL and now covid are doing plenty to assist Smith in his endeavour to rediscover his mojo.

Well, lets just say, he had more impact with the ball than our other spin options.

'Some tough calls': Cummins forecasts selection headaches as quicks vie for Pakistan Test spots

Trumble and Mallett should be rated ahead of Lyon. Neither of them were so easily worked to the legside, releasing all pressure. I think sometimes Lyon’s reaction to a ball played off the middle of bat, fools some into thinking he is in with a chance.
