For all the complaints about Wade, he’s hardly the major issue at hand here. We have a front line spinner who bowls 89kmh darts every single delivery and gets flogged for 5 runs an over (and then people wonder why he is dropped). A world class fast bowler who gets on the park for a test and dominates and then breaks down. A top order that may as well not even go out to bat, we may as well open with Clarke in India? I mean seriously it’s a worthwhile consideration. Phil Hughes looks so out of his depth it isn’t funny. Shane Watson… good riddance if he is actually leaving after this test, never have I seen such an overrated cricketer. Cowan is quickly running out of credits, if not so already. And finally Dhoni; despite that magnificent 224 (which was just sublime) has been abysmal behind the stumps, worse so than Wade. Not really sure why Steven O’Keefe or even Fawad Ahmed are not on the plane right now.

Michael Clarke cannot carry the team alone

Madmonk,

Yeah I get a bit caught up on players at times but I think he’s an awesome role model and inspiration for people who have gone through that kind of thing and he has proven he can perform but like you said India will tell us more. I’m not sure whether I agree with Warne’s selection of Marsh at 3 though for the test side

George Bailey heading out of anonymity

Yeah I agree about Wade. And you really think Pomersbach has what it takes?

George Bailey heading out of anonymity

that is a shocking effort! Wade will surely do better

George Bailey heading out of anonymity

Yeah he’s still not 100% clean all the time but I can’t complain, I believe the delivery he fumbled may have bounced a bit higher than he thought but he still should have taken it, apart from that he was flawless everywhere. He’s going to be a terrific player, the head to head between him and Prior will be fascinating to watch

Well whilst everyone droves on about our batting conundrum I was extremely impressed with Wade’s glovework yesterday, top notch effort, its hard to keep gloves to spin at the WACA, he should be fine in India.

I don’t think Doherty is much chop, but in saying that, he might go alright in India. I watched the latest test series and part timers such as Samit Patel and Joe Root were spinning the ball with ease and looked threatening.

Doherty pips O'Keefe for Test squad spot

Hey GenuineTailender, Great article mate and totally agree! Keep it up I look forward to your coverage of the Indian tour.

Mr Inverarity, your choices are losing fans

I have a good idea, after the completion of the AFL final, there is a gap of about 2 months between the grand final and the first Test match of the summer, how about Cricket capitalises on this gap and schedules the BBL tournament in this time?

Cricket absolutely needs all three formats

This article is laughable, all of it is laughable, I am pleased that 90% of the comments are in support of Wade as they should be, and for goodness sake what is the issue with the faf du plessis missed chance?! How many of you would take a catch off a fast bowler standing up to the stumps? ….. none of you, Healy even said whilst commentating that it was an extremely tough chance and would be lucky to stick, now some of the other chances he missed were pretty basic but in saying that he has taken some magnificent catches and his batting is up there with Gilchrist, he’s 25! 25! He’s going to improve so much, Healy commented a week or so back after their session that Wade should do better in India to spin than Australia because the low bouncing pitches will suit his height, let us see how he goes in the 4 tests over there, I can guarantee there will be significant, radical improvements, he kept well in the West indies, a keepers first series in his home country is always the worst, he even said he has been nervous while keeping and hasn’t been eating, he will cope much better from now on. Now stevedeanski in relation to your comparison with Paine’s batting, I think you need to seriously reconsider what you actually typed there, what a load of tripe! Sorry mate, you got this one wrong. And as someone else said, Paine’s keeping since coming back, to be honest, has been average at best, and he averages 21 in sheild this season, Wade is gonna be a regular for 10 or 12 years for sure.

Tim Paine must take Matt Wade's Test spot

poor Dan not picked for SA sheffield shield side next game 😮

Can Australia really win the Ashes?

There is certainly some kind of bias going on towards certain individuals COUGH Maxwell COUGH Henriques

Yeah that’s what I have been thinking too, good post Matt

Can Australia really win the Ashes?

Great article, and good banter by everyone. I see that Wade is creating quite a havoc in this discussion! I think it’s pretty simple, he’s a quality batsmen and I think the selectors have actually got it right by playing Wade ahead of Paine because to me, perhaps Paine does look more classy but he is not a better batsmen. Wade has made 2 scores over 100 when the side has needed it desperately, you can’t take that lightly, it’s very encouraging to see, it highlights leadership and sensing the occasion. He will probably chalk up another 2 or 3 tons by the time the test year is out. Now talking about who should be keeping is a totally different thing, but it seems to me they think he can improve his work to Lyon thus their reason not to play Paine. Remember that Paine is a lot older, I can see Wade really establishing himself and possibly when he’s 30 or so doing a Kumar Sangakkara and handing the gloves to say a Peter Nevill or Tim Ludeman and playing as a top order batsmen, because I think the selectors know that if all fails with Wadey’s glovework, they have unearthed a batsmen that can play in the baggy green for the next 10 to 12 years. My side for the Ashes would be as below, but for the upcoming Indian tour it would be different.

1. Dave Warner
2. Shane Watson
3. Usman Khawaja
4. Phil Hughes
5. Michael Clarke (c)
6. Joe Burns
7. Matthew Wade (vc)
8. James Pattinson
9. Peter Siddle
10. Nathan Lyon
11. Jackson Bird

(of course depending on which bowlers are ‘rotated’ the bowling lineup could vary 😉

Can Australia really win the Ashes?

That’s very interesting mate! Please if you find those stats that back you up, chuck them up here, I’d be interested to see stats for Clarke against spin bowling, my general consesensus is he plays it very well and has made some great hundreds on turning pitches but you may be onto something there.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Sehwag blast 119 off 119 not long ago?

Hey sittingbison, I did point that out about Wade if you didn’t notice, that his sweep, while successful at times, also gets him out a lot more than what it should. While I certainly think he prefers it coming onto the bat from the fast bowler’s (like most batsmen do) he’s far from our worst player of spin as shown from his maiden test century. But like you said he tends to get out to spinners in pretty much identical circumstances. He looked better when he decided to play the paddle sweep instead of the full blooded slog sweep.

Watson is hardly deserving of a spot either, he is the same as Cowan, he does the hard work, he gets in, he sees off the new ball and then gets himself to 50-60-70 and then somehow finds a way to get out. I am tired of our side rotating around Watson

The Ed Cowan conundrum

thanks james and yes I think there should be a spot for Khawaja for a long time from now into the future

If he had had as many as Cowan he’d be an established player already!

I think everyone knows that Clarke should and will do well in India. And yes Rohit you are on the money my friend, I have watched some of his innings too and this is why he is in my best 7 batsmen going to India, he is wristy and can use his feet fairly well, as well as pouncing on anything short.

Brett, ahh yes I know what you mean 😀 that satisfying feeling of crunching the short leg is good, and often sooner or later he will be forced out of there, which feels like a big pyschological win for the batsmen. I totally agree with you in everything you say and I confess I didn’t think of that at all, let us hope that our lefties can cash in on Ashwin early and upset his line and length.
