I feel that Saudi Arabia and Japan did best of the Asian teams with their groups, Australia a 50/50 group and Iran and South Korea very difficult groups.

I’m happy. I’m also glad we didn’t end up with an almost impossible group like we had in Brazil. I feel if we had this group in Brazil, we would’ve progressed.

Socceroos' 2018 FIFA World Cup draw revealed

Also, have the Matildas ever had a home and away crunch qualifier with such a significant distance and such a short turnaround?

I am a massive fan of promoting the women’s game and creating equality as much as possible, understanding the constraints identified above, however this flight is a very rare situation for both the men and the women.

Let's use this momentum and build a better future for football

Do you only have negatives? I assumed your prediction was that we’d be thrashed in all games of the Fed Cup, that we wouldn’t make it through the qualifiers and that because we got a 0-0 outcome in Honduras is was a mountain too big to climb.

Have any of your predictions come true?

Socceroos beat Honduras, qualify for 2018 FIFA World Cup

3-1.

That’s all that counts.

Correctly called hand ball.

Socceroos beat Honduras, qualify for 2018 FIFA World Cup

Easily a red.

Socceroos vs Honduras: World Cup qualifier highlights, live scores, blog

We’ll 2, Iran. But I get your point.

I also feel though, there needs to be some levelling, otherwise you should just say the highest 31 ranked teams and the hosts should complete and that’s the end of it.

Of course that’s absurd. The current balance is right IMO, except maybe South America is undercut a little.

Our road to Russia is no more difficult than any other nation's

Do you have anything to back this up? Or just a gut feeling?
I don’t think anyone is out there saying it’s a foregone conclusion. Rather I actually see much of the opposite.

I personally was buoyed by the fact we performed better than expected away and Honduras has struggled with the travel.

How many away games has Honduras drawn with goals or won this campaign? How many home games has Australia won at home compared to drawing with goals scored?

Again, I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion at all. It is football after all. In addition, I don’t think any of the players feel it’s wrapped up either. The hubris of any fans are irrelevant in that case.

Bring on tomorrow!

Away goals rule looms large for Socceroos

It’s only worth double if both teams have the same amount of points at the end of the home and away (thinking 3, 1, 0).

If we win the game, away goals are not considered.

Away goals rule looms large for Socceroos

Precisely. This is what I don’t understand. All the talk beforehand was how we’d manage not to lose by too much.
Then when we draw, it’s not good enough. I have no idea what to think sometimes.

Of course it would’ve been better to draw 3-3 instead of 0-0. It also would’ve been better to win.

Heck, if we won 1-0, there would’ve been people saying it’s not good enough, we should’ve won 3-0.

Away goals rule looms large for Socceroos

Can you please read the discussion about the away goal rule? It only comes into effect if there is a draw.

Also, when considering the Socceroos record, what is their record at ANZ? What is their record in Australia?

It will be a shock if they lose. Possible, yes.

Brave Roos earn the right to be confident of qualification

If Honduras score 1 goal, we need to score 2.

Away goals only count for more if the teams can’t be split regarding wins draws and loses.

Brave Roos earn the right to be confident of qualification

Good post. Completely agree.

Brave Roos earn the right to be confident of qualification

IMO, it will favour us. Being in the last pot always put us against the strongest opposition.

The chances of drawing the equivalent (important word considering recent events) of Spain, The Netherlands and Chile again are massively reduced and the chances of drawing worse borders on nill.

Socceroos climb to 43rd in world rankings

Precisely. Friendlies can sometimes also drop your ranking, regardless of the result.

Socceroos climb to 43rd in world rankings

I guess that’s what I was alluding to. I assume the games we played 3 and 4 years ago are having less and less affect on our rankings, like the Brazil World Cup matches for example will drag us down the rankings compared with our recent form purely because we lost rather than the mostly draws and wins we’ve had recently.

The losses we lose can sometimes benefit our rankings more than the draws and wins we gain!

Socceroos climb to 43rd in world rankings

Agree Griffo. How long do games remain to be counted? The tool says that every year older they impact less, but how many years do they actually stay?

I feel we are losing some matches from a bad run of form and this coupled with only two losses (Germany and Japan away) our rankings are benefitting as a result.

Socceroos climb to 43rd in world rankings

Interesting. I would love for articles like this, in addition to the games that were added for the ranking change, also the games that were removed. This can have just as big, sometimes bigger influence.

Looking at commercial flights, 26hrs was the fastest I could find! That only allows 2 or 2.5 days for recovery (as you can’t just hop straight onto a commercial flight.

Who will Australia have to beat to get into the FIFA World Cup?

That’s such a fast turnaround for such a long trip from Honduras to Australia!

Almost too soon.

Socceroos dates confirmed for Honduras

Touché.

Who will Australia have to beat to get into the FIFA World Cup?

Agree. I feel that Honduras and Syria will provide a very similar test. Yes, completely different style of test, however similar in difficulty.

In the same way, it won’t be easy for us either.

Who will Australia have to beat to get into the FIFA World Cup?

A330 doesn’t have the legs to do it in one hit. Also, there are too many options, through LAX, through DFW and through Santiago. Way too many seats to purchase.

Drama!
